The Agricultural article on our
foui lb page, from Col. Raiford, con
tains some valuable hints regarding
the planting and culture of wheat.
The experience of the Colonel has
taught him that improper and ill
prepared ground, together with late
planting will by no means guarantee
a good wheat crop.
Many of our fanners have for the
past week been busily engaged
palling fodder, and if we have a
continuance of such showers of rain
as fell yesterday and the day before,
it is feared that much of the forage
will be considerably damaged. We
are informed that on the place of
Mr. R. L. Gamble, near town, the
caterpillars have made their ap
peaiance and are at present numer
ous in his cotton crop. These are
the first that have been reported to
this season.
• Personal. —We were pleased to
meet in our office, on Tuesday last,
Col. J. I). Mathews, candidate for
nomination to represent this tlieSth.
Congressional District. Col. Ma
thews was elected to Congress in
ISG6, hut his disabilities being unre
moved he was not permitted to take
his seat. He is a man of sound
mind, and would no doubt do honor
to his position, and ably represent
the claims of the people should he
be elected the secoua time.
Rats ! Rats ! Lots of Rats !!
now infest the stores and dwellings
of Louisville, and owing to the scar
city of cats in the community, the
clerks have organized what might
bo termed a Rat Club, for the exter
mination of. the vermin about the
stores. In the course of twenty
four hours, during the present week,
over one hundred of the long tailed
pests were slayed in the store of
Messrs. F.-A. Sinquefield & Co.—
We are at' a loss to decide which to
put foremost- for real benefit to the
town, the base ball or the rat club.
Announcements. —Attention is
called to the announcements of
Messrs. R. J. Pugsley and Berry
Hart as candidates for Clerk of the
Superior Court, and Sheriff of Eman
uel county. They solicit the sup
port of the people in the coming
election, and we trust that their
< merits may be liberally rewarded.—
jvn tli 3 election of such officers di
minutive personal prejudices should
be laid aside, and men who will be
most faithful and efficient in the dis
charge of their duties should be sup
ported.
Home Again.— Our esteemed
young friend and fellow townsman,
A' r . Edward Hunter, eldest son of
I>r. E. H, W. Hunter, is again in
our midst. He has but recently
graduated in the Scientific depart
ment at our State University, and
is now wearing a beautiful gold
medal which tells the tale of his
carrying away the highest honors of
his class. We congratulate him on
his success, and are well pleased
tnat be so well represented his coun
ty in her State University. He will
follow the profession of Civil Engi
neer, and we predict for him signal
•tucqess. Modest, unassuming in his
manners, untiring in his’ efforts, gen
tlemanly in his deportmehl, he pos
hes in a high degree all the requi-

feeling fully assured that he will re
alize the expectation of his friends.
The Babecue.— .Friday last hav
ing been selected as a suitable day
for a barbecue to be given by the
citizens of Louisville, all the neces
sary provision were made, and at
an early hour in the morning, big,
little, young and old might have
been seen wending their way to the
spot selected for the festivities of the
day—the grove near the Academy.
Invitations having been extended
the attractions on the occasion were
greatly enhanced by the appearance
of a number of fair and charming
visitors Irom the country; and the
trip of the “light and fantastic toe,”
rendered much to the pleasure and
amusement of all present. Dinner
having been snnounced by the ring
ing of the Academy bell, all other
amusements ceased for the refresh
ment of the inner man. After par
taking of the sumptuous repast, va
rious amusements were afforded du
ring the afternoon, which were con
cluded with a game of base ball by
the Evening Star Club. All de
parted in peace to their quiet and
peaceable homes, expressing them
selves as well pleased with the man
ner in which the day had been spent.
With that same good feeling which
attends “ye local” on all similar oc
casions, he begs to be remembered
on the event of future passti nes of
this kind.
Messrs. Ludden & Bates, pub
lishers of the Southern Musical
Journal, Savannah, Ga., (SI 11 year)
will accept our thanks for a collec
tion of the latest and most popular
pieces of music of the day. These
gentlemen are now giving to all new
subscribers to the Musical Journal,
Sheet-Music of their own selection
to the value of 60 cents : How 7 they
can furnish such a valuable maga
zine, and so much music, for only a
dollar a year, is a mystery to us;
and, this last offer, is almost past be
lief. Those who intend subscribing
had best do so at once, as the Music
Premium is withdrawn after Novem
ber Ist.
The July Number comes later
than usual, (probably on account of
Jubilee,) but is well worth waiting
for. Air. S. N. Penfield’s Descrip
tion of the Jubilee, is especially in
teresting.
The Music in this Number alone
is worth the price of a year’s sub
scription. Specimen copies free.—
Address, Ludden «fc Bates, Publish

Agricultural and Mechanical
Association of Georgia. —The pre
mium list for the second exposition
of the above Association, to be held
in the city of Savannah, during the
w r eek commencing on the 2d day of
next December, has just been re
ceived from the Secretary. A glance
through its pages indicates that the
approaching exhibition will possess
unusual interest. The list of awards
is large and liberal, and comprehends
all articles and objects of genial and
admitted value and utility. While
special stresshas been placed upon the
practical, the claims of the beautiful
have not been ignored.
The fair will commence at a sea
son of the year when persons from
the country can visit Savannah with
out any apprehension, and when the
city presents her busiest and liveli
est aspect. The markets, at that
period, are abundantly supplied with
every variety of sea food, while tlie
numerous places of resort in Jthe vi
cinity have lost nofte of their attrac
tions.
The accommodations for live
stock, machinery and miscellaneous
articles are the largest and most
complete to be found in the State.
The removal of the Grand Stand af
fords spectators an unimpeded view
of the entire course. The Fair
Grounds are contiguous to the city,
and the facilities for reaching them
are frequent and numerous.
The different departments are un
der the charge of courteous and
competent gentlemen, and exhibitors
are fully assured that every oppor
tunity will be afforded them of mak
ing a satisfactory display of their
various w 7 ares. The Savannah Fair
will close the list for the present
year. The first exposition was a
decided success—the second bids fair
to result in a more marked triumph.
The premium List makes a hand
some pamphlet of sixty pages, and
its neat typographical appearance
reflects credit upon the Morning
News Job office, from which estab
lishment it w r as issued.

This institution, which was opened one year
ago in Atlanta, Ga., to educate, Young men for
the practical duties of life, is wielding an in
fluence greater than any other institution of
the kind in the South. There has already
been more than one hundred of its graduates
sent out who are to-day occupying responsible
and lucrative positions. The teachers are
well known to the people lor their energy, ac
tivity, and usefulness, and it is the only Col-

Mr. Local.— Being a well wish
er to the town of Louisville, I see
no impropriety in making a few re
marks regarding the streets, public
improvements &c. The two street
crossings which have lately been
built across the business street are
more of a nuisance than otherwise,
in their present condition. It is
impossib'e to cross them after a rain
without sinking several inches in
the clay. Cannot this be reme
died? if not it would have been
belter had they never been built. I
overheard a conversation the other
dayjbetween some ladies, when one
observed that if she had to cross
the streets often she would certainly
order her a velocipede. This work
add3 no credit to our street commit
tee, and it is hoped that they will
take immediate steps to remedy the
evil if in their power to do so.
You have several times suggested
the propriety of pulling a horse
rack in front of Mrs. Millers board
ing house. This is a place where
one is much needed, and I can’t
conceive of any just reason why the
matter has not been attended to
long since. Trusting that these re
marks will give offense to no one, I
am as ever.
A Well Wisher.
Louisville, August Bth. 1872.
The Leae.—This question is
still before the House. We had
hoped that it would be disposed of
with the same dispatch manifested
by the Senate. We trust that this
will be the last days expense incur
red. Let the question be settled—
let the lease alone. This is the sen
timent constantly coming to us from
the people. The Seaport Appeal,
Koine Commercial and other jour
nals are now out, and to be added
to the almost unanimous list for tlie
lease. 7 Let the lease be sustained.—

A Perillous Season.
Glorious and delightful as the summer weath
er is, its tropical heat is a sevdle trial to the vi
tal powers. Even the strongest are prostrated
byits effects. The common phrase applied to
this condition of the body is “general debility.”
Now, general debility arises from, and includes
a variety of ailments. The fiver is more or
less affected, the bowels are either constipated
or too much relaxed, the stomach but half per
forms the work 01 digestion, the appetite is
poor and spirits depressed. This is what is
called general debility. It is a general disar
rangement of all the physical functions, and
requires as a remedy a medicine that will reg
ulate them all. HostettePs Stomach Bitters is
specially adapted to this pnrp< se. ts general
operation is 10. confined to a single organ If
the liver is affected, it restores its tone. If the
stomach is torbid, it regenerates it If the
nerves are tremulous and weak, it braces and
them. If the mind, which ever sym
pathizes with the body, is gloomy and despond
ent, it relieves the dificulty, and soon brings
the whole mechanism of the body into harmony
with the laws of health.
There is no civilized nation in the Western
Hemisphere in which the utility.of Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters as atomic, corrective, and an
tibillious medicine, is not known and appreciat
ed. Throughout the Trophies it is considered,
both by the people and the profession, the stan
dard specific. While it is a medicine for all
seasons and all climates, it is specially suited
to the complaints generated by the weather,
being the purest and beat vegetable stimulant
in tho world.
Beware of the Bitters made of acid and dan
gerous materials, which unscroupulous parties
are endeavoring to toistnpon the people. Their
name is legion, and the public has no guantee
that they are not poisonous. Adhered to die
tried remedy! Hostetler’s Bitters, sold only in
glass, and never in kegs or barrels.
PHYSIOLOGISTS say that our bodies r
re iewi and 0 ice in seven years. The material > f
Which they are reconstructed is the blood, and
uuless it be fully charged with the elemeuts ot
vitality, the strength and health of the system
decl ne. Os all blood depurents. Dr. Walker’s
Vinegar Bitters is the safest and most infalli
ble. There is no disease, arising from depra
ration of the blood, which it will not speedily
cure.
