“The love of money is the root of
. ..all evil,” and the root, is sometimes
the cause of a disfigured counte
nance, as was the esse Tuesday eve
ning' last with two young men in
Louisviltc—a sewing machine agent
and a farmer. It seems that agei tj
owed farmer a small amount which
he refused to pay. Farmer attempt
ed to force, the collection of the same
by the use of muscular power and
h s buggy whip, hut was not so sue
ccssful as he might have been had
the marshal not interfered. The
commissioners thought that farmer
ought to pay for the power he had
vested' in himself, as collector, a
license of five dollars, to promote
public improvements. Both parties
wee alive at last accounts.
It is a common occurrence for otir
contemporaries to boast of the I*.
G’s. I. G., old violins, woolly calves,
huge goard vines, twin mules, long
cotton stalks, candidates for office,
Gophers Ac. See., but we have fif
teen delicate young men in our town
who can eat for supper, upwards < f
one hundred of the finest perch and
cat-fish that the Ogeechee affords,
and four beef heels, with a quan
tum suffic'd of breadstuffs and ot ;er
delicacies, and then sleep sound all
night, get up in the morning com
plaining of being unusually well and
grumbling at the late breakfast hour.
One young man who was a little in
disposed said he couldn’t eat but six
perch, one beef heel and a plate of
the cat-fish stew at the supper on
Saturday night.

There are many canvassers and seek
ers for office, in our county. Per
mit a suggestion from one who be
lieves that the office should seek the
man, and one who believes that mer
it should be taken into consideration
as well as gratification. And in se
lecting men to fill these county offi
ces, Simula wf fnm us an in
valid, physically unable to work foi
a livelihood and yet competent and
able to fill an office, will not a sense
of duty suggest that we make a
choice of him! Give to him the ad
vantages that will enable him to live
from the small emoluments of some
respectable office. Entertaining the
opinion that I do, that those worthy
and afflicted citizens among us should
reap some of the profits arising from
the various offices, I suggest the
name of the Rev. Wm. A. Hayi.es,
who, we all know, is a deserving and
competent man to fill the office of
Treasurer, and it is hoped
that the convention will consider his
claims in the nomination of county
officers.

by staling that Col. Jas. Stapleton

who are fully capacitated and will

The above named gentlemen are too
well known in our county, both po

suffice it to say that they have but
