PLACED ON TRIAL
FRAEATER R
On Tuesday morning last in Cobb
Superior court Judge N. A. Morris, at
called term, placed Willard Webb, col
ored, on trial for hisg life for an alleged
agsault on Mrs. Exa Brown, which oc
curred at her home near Vinings on
July 20th, she having previously iden
tified Webb when brought before her
as the identical negro.
Judge Morris had taken every precau
tion to throw every safeguard-around
the accused negro, that he might have
a fair and impartial trial, and appointed
as attorneys, Col. D. W. Blair, Col. J.
E. Mozley, Col. E. H, Clay and Col.
Fred Morris, who conducted the de
fense.
Col. Brooke, the solicitor-general,
was assisted by Col. Charles Griffin and
Col. Gordon Gann, attorneys.
The jury was obtsined after exhaust
ing practically four panels of jurors.
The jurors accepted and sworn are B.
H. Hill, John Spraggins, L. C. Land, D.
C. Osborn, J. T. Camp, B. C, Ball, T. L.
Davis, J. E. Gault, T. E, Jiles, R. E.
Benson, J, A. Lewis and W. N. Terry.
Mrs. Exa Brown was the first witness,
and positively identified the negro,
Willard Webb, as her assaulter. She
was not positive as to the spotted dog
being the one seen at the scene, but it
resembled the one in every particular.
Mrs. Brown is a frail woman, and was
accompanied in the court room by her
sister, Mrs. Dolye, and brothers and
husband.
At the time we go to press, the case
had not been c¢oncluded, 0
