' Joshua held forth on last night and
| strangely attempted to ingratiate himself j„ ne tu w l,i| c away an idle hour of the j you as the man for the crisis
of the Constitution.
Upon the assumption by him of the
latter position, the breach between him
and the fanatics will bo- ojvn and com
plete, and we can then begin to look upon
the future with somefifing of certainty.
Already the newspapers "of Washington
City give out intimation that when the
tupture come*, the President will use all
his power to carry his point; that a proc
larnation declaring the Union restored
will be issued, as a consequence, the
Southern Representatives will be entitled
to tiicir seats, and if the Radicals refuse
to permit them to occupy them, the strong
arm of the military will be called in to
assist in matters. The theory, is this,
that a refusal to acknowledge the force
of the proposed proclamation, and permit
the Southern Representatives to take their
seats, would be rebellion, and that it
is as much the duty of the President
to suppress it in Congress ns anywhere
else. Wiiethcr these joyful events will
ever transpire wo cannot say, but it is
certain the President will soon be forced
to show his hand, and if lie is a man of
true courage bo will show it clothed
with nil the power lie has. In the mean
time lot tho Southern people bo quiet
and await developments.
What We have Left Us.
One of the Kings of Macedou, while
on the eve of depasture upon an expedi
tion, began to lAiride his effects among
his favorite*, and as he was assigning the
lhst portion, one of his attendants asked
him what he had left for himself. His
Majesty replied, “ Hope, and that is
enough.” The Southern people, after
tho emancipation of their-slaves, the de
vastation of their fields, the destruction
of their railways, their cities and their
institutions, when asked what they have
left, can answer in tho language of the
Macedonian, “ Hope, and that is enough.’
They have au abiding hope that a day of
justisc and.retribution is near at hand —
that the enemies of their rights may bo
overthrown—that tho imprisoned leaders
of their late conflict may be speedily re-
leased, and be blessed with a career of
prosperity in connection with themselves
more brilliant and enduring than they
enjoyed at any period of the past. In
deed, we know that ocean was never rock
ed by sterns, o* earth cursed by wrong
that knew no ending. The waters once
so agitated will become calm again, and
injustice, that for the moment boar* so
hcaTily, will ere long be lifted trp, but to
be cast down by (lie finger of Eternal
Right. The passions and ravings of men
arc of but a moment’s duration. At last
couies the calm, when reason resumes her
sway and consigns the fanatic and the
oppressor to their deserved but uuen-
viable fate. Thus wc
