PALMETIO SHIELD, OSCAII A. CANTRELL, EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. "THE IIANPSi'iIE EWTI'B OF THE rAI.MF.TTn SHIELD ” PALMETTO, GA„ MAY 22, 1873. 9 " 1 ' " -..-•. Our Picture- —On our recently pay ing a visit In Atlanta, the Herald an nounced I hut “the handsome editor of the Pai.mf.tto Shiei.d is in the city.’— Now, we desire to show our readers how handsome we really are, and to this end, we have had prepared, at considerable expense, a correct like ness of ourself, which appears in this issue. Bt§s“ Next week’s issue completes our , first volume, and with that issue the subscription of quite a number of our subscribers expires, arid unless we are notified to continue, their names will bestiickcn bum our roll. Look for the cross mark. We have had a great deal of trouble by parties refusing to pay for the paper longer than the time mentioned by them at the time of sub scribing, and to avoid further trouble we have adopted a rule to voluntarily prolong no one’s time, consequently those wishing to renew, should do so as soon as the cross mark appears. Tf not convenient to see us, apply to our nearest agent. S£a?* The Germania, the Hanover, the Niagara and the Republic insurance companies, "compriSTtig the Under wri ter’s Agency, have cornu enced suit in the circuit court of the United States, in Atlanta, against CTrnn 0 Wynn, of Gi.wela county, Tor sro,ooo damagf*. The cause of action is an alleged libel published concerning tire above com panies by Mr. Wynn. Tire libel ap peared as an advertisement in the col umns of the Nownan Herald and the Atlanta Constitution. Era?* Among the many distinguish and persons whose names were enrolled as delegates to '.lie Gubernatorial Con vention, is Governor Hendricks, of In diana When he ent, r< and the hall yester day morning, he was vociferously call er) for, and responded in a brief but fe licitous speech. Governor Hendricks is one of America’s most talented sons, and we believe Ire we will bo the peo ple’s choice for next President of tire United States. BQk- Hon. J. E. Brown and the At lanta Ileruld are engaged in a heavy quill battle. The contest is hard, and as yet uncertain. We think from tire present indications that the heaviest ttholling from the Atlanta ink batteries is over; the struggle has weakened down to an occasional cross fire with a straight shot at intervals. No chance now for an explosion. A subscriber puts to us the following querry: Mr. Daniel married Ur. lingers’ daughter, and Mr. Rogers married Mr. Daniel’s daughter, now please toll me what kin is their children. Without attempting to answer, we will acknowledge, using the language of an old acquaintance, that we are completely “cotnfnddled.” Ed. Join - .soli, of Griffin, was ac cidentally shot last Monday. He had been in bathing, and was putting on his clothes, when a pistol fell from his pocket, and discharged, the ball taking effect in the abdomen. A newly manied couple if Co lumbus recently took a bridal ti nr in an express wagon, got drunk, drew knives and pistols on the police, and look rooms in the calaboose. Campbell county was repre sented in the Gubct na'ot in! Convention by T. W. Latham, Levi Ballard, YV. F. Devine, J. C, Smith, J, \\ . Nilms and E. R. Thornton. There are twenty-seven cases of small pox at the Augusta hospital —all colored. Jtt®“ Sickness in the Editor’s family accounts for the scarcity of leading matter in this issue. fSaj“ The following has been sent us Cur publication: The fact that men are sinners is so j apparent as to have extorted confes sions from the most bitter op posers ol i revealed religion; Voltaire, the great- ! ,- st chief of modern infidels, who boast ed that he would root out the name of Christian from the earth, penned the following lines: “ ho can without horror consider the whole world as the empire of de struction ? It abounds with victims. It is a vast field of carnage and conta gion. Every species is, without pity, pursued and torn to pieces, through the earth, tire air and the sea. In nan j here is more v. retched ness than in all other animals put together. He loves life and yet lie knows he must die if he eujoys a transiet good; I he suffers various evils and at last is devoured by worms. This knowledge is his fatal prerogative; other animals have it not. lie spends the fleeting moments ot Iris existence in diffusing the miseries he must suffer; in cutting the throats of his fellow creatures for pay; in cheating and being cheated; m robbing and being robbed; in serv ing that he may command; and in re penting of all Ire does. The bulk of mankind are nothing mor e than a crowd of wretches, equally criminal and un fortunate ; and tie globe contains rather car casses than men, I tremble at the review of this dreadful picture, to find that it contains a complaint against Providence, and I wish I had never been born!’ fco.VMrNICATI'J). J Editor Shield : Judge Short has been with us again, his long, bony musctilai frame swinging back and forth like unto a North Carolina ivell sweep, while he swore worse than the “ aijny i:i Flanders.” The trouble with the Judge seems to be that he, in an un r guarded moment, and perhaps urged on by “evil spirits,” went security on an official bond. His eo seeuiities, as he believes have worked themselves out of the scrape in some way, and thus left the whole weight upon the Judge’s should' is. If the declarations of the Judge are true, and I have no reason to doubt them, there certainly has been bad faith somewhere. The Judge says that in the last resort he will be compelled .to throw himself up; n the mercy o! the Legislature. If hu does they ought to clear him.
