PALMETIO SHIELD, OSCAR A. CA> riii:Ll„ EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. PALMETTO, GA„ JULY 25, 1873. | ... Apologetic. —We dislike to render : excuses for our shortcomings, but in this case we will have to ask the in diligence of our readers for the delay of this issue. We find it imp' ssiblo to i get out a paper with the office in the condition that it now is. and we hope that our patrons will bear with us un til we can get straight! nod up. It is our determination to make the paper a success and shall work for th it end. A Mr. Illi.i. was shot and instantly kil ed, at Kingston, by a bailiff on the 23d instant, C. 11. C. WILI, INGHAM, late of the Atlanta Sun, is now connected with the Griffin Star. Cadet Pennis, of Illinois, was drown ed wh'lo bathing at West 1\ inf, X Y. day before yesterday. The Georgia Zouaves met in Atlan ta on Wednesday night and elected non-commissioned officers. Mr George Castfxlo, of Henry cram - Iy, carried twenty bales of hist years cotton to Griffin, la-t Wednesday. Religious. —There is an interesting meeting in progress at Trinity Church in Atlanta, Rev. Mr. Evans officiating. The United States steamship Ti gress, in search of the Polaris, arrived ft St. Johns New Brunswick on the 23d of July An old lady’ from the country, with six unmarried daughters, was in Au gusta last Wednesday, hunting for the Patrons of Husbandry. She means businc ss. Cov Smith, in company with Judge Tiipp left Atlanta yesterday morning for Powder Springs to deliver an ag ricnltnral address to the patrons of husbandry. Rev. C. W. Howard, the lecturer for this, the Eighth C ngressional District organized a grange of the patrons of Husbandry at Thompson on Wednes day lust.— Weekly Journal. The honorary degree of Magister Artium’ was conferred on W. 0. Tug gle, Esq, of (his place, at the recent commencement of Mercer University LaGrange Importer. Judge Dillard llerxd in, a prominent citizen of Elbert county, and fo- sev oral years her representative in the Legislature, died last week, aged sev enty-eight. He was unmarried and had never seen a railroad. Mrs Sarah Tavl r, who was among tike first settlers of Monroe county, more Shan fifty years ago, died at the house of her nephew, Judge J. ,\l Wi.ite, on the 4th lost.. She was seventy-eight years old, and for the last forty years an exemplary member of the B'ptist Church. In August of 1872, James Picket, of Idaho, dealt a blow with a miner’s pick on the skull of an Indian woman, Milling her almost instantly. lie was arraigned and tried by the civil au thorities of Idaho ar.d sentenced to death, ;t being the first case w here a white man has boon sentenced to- suf fer the extreme penalty of the I'.r.v for the murder of a rod-kin. A Mistake —The following from the Atlanta Herald : The Herald staff distribnti and through the irrepressible Burney a bottle of champagne to the Mayor of every sta lion along the route, and to ever) news paper. Something wrong, gentlemen. We have not seen oi tasted anything of the kind!. Guess we will have to make out with the n)iam minus the pugne. Henry Gwiu-.a colored irranof Savan nah, started- on a European tour in May hrst. A paper published in Liverpool, speaking of him says : A tine specimen of the American cotton plant, grown iii Early county, south west Georgia, and' several beautiful samples of the cleaned fibre, were exhibited in the Exchange newsroom yesterday,, by Mr. Henry G ain, of Savannah,, who is passing through Liverpool with the pla. t siul sait.oles, enroute to the Vi enna Exposition. Mr. Gain, who does m t look like a person of color was formerly a slave, and was owned, by a Geoagia clergyman, tint he re ceived his freedom as a reward fo-r long faithful, and invaluable service. Mr Gwin comes to Europe, with a good supply of excellent letters of inti educ tion, including one to the HonM -Jay, United Stales Minister at Vicuna. The State of Jackson. A convention is to le held at Jack- j son, 1 elite ssee, in the 2Cili. instant, j for the purpose of promoting the or ganiz lion of anew State lrotn paits of Mississppi atid Tennessee. It is | imposed to annex to West Tennessee those counties of Mississippi north of the Tallahatchie river. Everybody in Mississippi seems to favor the project. The Whites in Northern Mississippi arc to a man for it, because it will relieve them ol a negro domination that promises to grew worse rather than hotter. And the blacks, or more accurately, their carpet-bag manipulators, are agree ab.e, because there would ilicn be none to molest or make them afraid. The whole ten itory affected, with the ex , ception of what would le left of Ten- I ncssce, is willing to give the new | State a good “go-off.” If '.lie State of Jackson reaches a | eoiisnn.malion, :t means a segration, [ and not a unification of the two races, j It means that Jackson will be a State governed by the whites, and that .Mis sissippi is to be handed hopelessly over to the spoiler. The Cod -DiielSo. Tim Coinin', ns Snn of Wednesday contains the following: F. r a number ( f days the streets have been full ol rumors of a duel between Major J. F. W addell, S licitor ol Russel! county, Alabama, and a young Mr. Phillips, ol Atlanta, a nephew of the man who was killed in (Jpi lika by young Hooper.
