CORNING, Jit., Nynck, N. Y, TEfH/YV PALMETTO, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 1873. The Fatal Test. tt was midsummer at Newport.— The intense heat of ciiies had driven crowds to seek pleasure and health in this gay, sea-girt town. Hotels and boatding-heuses were filled to over flowing: The summer-residences,, own ed by the Wealthy, and c osed all win ter, were now alive with busy feet and merry voices. At morning the white beach Was covered with men and women in robes of various bright colors, while out on the water o’her forms rose and fell with the a ft swell of the waves) and the galy-coh red dresses of tiie bath ers made the sea look not unlike a brilliant fl iwer garden. Again at even ing the broad bosom of <d I ocean echo ed to merry voices aid sweet music, as the pleasure-boats of all shapes and every sizp, floated over its silver surface, freighted with fair women and brave men. And so, by day and night, the round of pleasure was un ending. Clam buk"S and picnics, rides to the “ Fort, 'I hops at the “ Ocean ” and “Atlantic,’’ made the days fly with “ winged feel.’’ And the loveliest of all the lovely women assets)bit and there was the heio ine of my sketch—Florence Vane.— She reigned-a Very queen of love and beauty. Adulation followed her every loot-step. Men adored her, and wo men admired, even while they envied, Sh; was so faultlessly beautiful in per son, si graceful ami winning in man ner that every one yielded to tlm mag ic of her charms. She counted her lovers by scores. Daily she listened to vows of hive, and listened untouch ed. Many a noble, manly heart had given itself up to a vild, sweet dream of love, to be awakened by her careless rejection ol its holiest worship. Had she no heart, Ibis woman, so snpeibly beautiful ? She seemed utterly re gardless of (he pain she caused, and j when at her feet was laid a hcait, I won away from one ol her own sex, no j i(gu t passed her lips. Bright; bril liant, and glorious in her pride and beauty, she seemed impervious to the s' alts of the wi'y god; Near one of the beaches that make Newport so famous is a romantic spot called “ Purgatory.” R.siug in a straight line from the ocean, and to the he glit of sever 1 hundred feet, is a rocky blilT; In this wall of rock there is a tis.-ure some fifteen feet wide, run ning back from the water a long dis tance, homing' au abyss the edge ol which few care to approach, and into whose depths fewer dare look. From it Conics up the eternal moan of the waters as they rttsli in from tlte sea.— lhe sides of the cliff slope gently down, and ate carpeted with soft, green moss, making the Spot a faVor ite resort o( visitors. Near the close of the season, on a pleasant afternoon; many funds wan dered singly or in pairs, near this chasm, v. Idle here and there a merry group was seated on the soft sward; enjoy in" the gentle bree2\ Quite apart from the rest stood a man and woman; si'ent now, she gass ing out over the 6ea, while his eyes dwelt on her with an expression of sad silent waiting. It needs but one look at that form of matchless grace, those eyes of heavenly blup, the poise of the queenly head, with its wealth of golden hair, to assure us the lady is none other than Florence Vane - One fair hand rested on' tlie arm of her companion. Among ail of those whom Iter beauty had captivated Philip Gordon had been the most de voted. He was ever at her side, his devot’on never concealed. His oft ropealed offers of love had never been openly refused, and he had chosen to construe her silence into tacit consent. He was well worthy of any woman’s preference, and Florence knew it.— Wealthy, aristocratic, noble in mind and person, lie hud been muclt courted and caressed ; his attentions to Flor ence had given many a less fashiona ble fair one the heat taebo, They stood on tile shore of tlte deep, blue sen, tho hearts of b i'll impressed tty the LeatV’y around them, lie had been telling her again the story of his , love for Iter, and been pleading for an answer. But she remained silent Why did she not speak to him ? Bite was communing with her oven heart. Never un'i! low had she felt what it was to love. Rut something within her rose up and called Philip Gordon “ Master.” She struggled against the knowledge. While her whole sotil cried nt with the yearn ing desire to lie his. she could not let j him Seethe truth. Yet why her pride ? J Why not makeTOdin happy with the | knowledge that had come to her long j ago ? Up from the seething depths of the | chasm near which they stood, rose the j sad moan of the imprisoned water ; | and as she turned to look toward the i HssU'rC, there came into her heart a | strong desire to t. st. his love, and her | power over him. Lifting her glorious eyes to Irs, am. letting her very soul Shine in them, she said, “ Do you really love so well ?” “Love you, it is more than love, it is worship,” For a metre ni her heart was touch ed by his earnest ho?, but the love of power was stronger that aught else. “ Supp se I sh ail require a test of J’onr affection,’' she said, “will you accept it ?” “ Yes, even if it were to die for yor j Again I >ve and pride sti Uggled with in her ; then she said, pointing to a bunch of lovely flowers that grow on the other side of the chasm “L*ap the chasm and bring me those flowers, and this hand shall be yon is.' 1 His eyes shown with suppressed feeling ; lie gave her a long look, and with a s[ ring landed safely on the other side, lie held aloft the cnvcltd flnvers, waving them in trinmj h. “ Now leap hack,” she said, with her sweetest smile. Once more he sprung f r the bank. For one instant l is bn in seemed poised in mid-air ; below the waters wailed and moaned Only an instant. Instead of dealing the abyss fairly, Ins feel struck the edge of the fearful chasm. He strove vainly to secure a footing fell back and disappear: and. Far into the following vvii tor Flor ence V.me lay upon her bed, racked with fever, raving in delirium, living over and over that feat fill scene.— When, after long months, the fever left her, tiict light of reason had gone out forever. 0, and lied mercy on her ; and h fore the Ju e roses bloomed again, she had gone 'o her rest. Use of Tobacco. On this sul jeet we give the following remarks from the Popular Science Monthly. We recon mend them to tlie consideration of smokers t “Tobacco belongs to that class of narcotic and exciting substances, and lias no food value. Stimulation means abstracted, not added force. It involves tile tiardotic pafalysis of a portioh of the functions, the activity of which is essential to healthy life. “It will be said that tobacco soothes and cli ers the weary toiler, and solaci s the overworked brain. Such may be its momentary effects; but the sequel cannot be ignored. All such expedients are fallacious. When a certain amount of brain-work or hand-work has been performed, nature must have space to to rectipe ate, and all devices for es capingfrom this necessity will fail. It is bud policy to set (lie house on fhe to wrrm otir hand by the Masse. L"t it, then, he clearly understood that the temporary excitement produced by to bacco is gained by the destruction of vital force, and that it contains abso lutely nothing which can be of use to the tissues of tlie body. “Tobacco adds no potential strength to the human frame. It may spur a weary brain or feeble arm to undue ex ertion for a sliuit time, but its work is destructive, not constructive. It can not ad I one irolecttie to the. plasm oift of which our bodies are daily built up. On the c htrary, it exerts upon it a most deleterious influence. It dots not supply, but diminishes vital force. “It has been denied that tobacco leads to organic disease, but. the evi dence is very strong the other way, and it would be very remarkable if con tinued functional derangement diJ not (intimately lead to chronic derange ment of the organs ; that it causes functional disturbance, no one dreams of denying; indeed, it lias bein' re marked that no habitual smoker can be said to Lave a perfect day's health” Excessive smoking is unquestiona bly bad. And even the smallest quan tity of smoking is very bad for boys. To sec an urchin ten years old sucking a segue, which is nearly as big as him self, is an Unpleasant spectacle, and it bodes little for the future energy of the premature smoker. A Me rcli an Us Daughter Becomes Fit asn ore (I of a Negro. i In nnv of the most fasliion.b e por tions of Philadelphia, s iys the Piii'adel | phia Telegraph, in an elegant mansion there dwells a merchant of good stand . ing, inspected by all with whom h* ■ Conies in contact. and honoied by every member of his tiade. A man, who, loving his family better than life itself, has given to his loved ones a heart glowing with affection, and snnomi ■ ded by alt that the heart ran desire and yet this outpouring of a noble heart’s aff dint: has not met A’ilh the united gratitude which is ee t .inly its due, and which our Creator has made I instinct’s first law. Our merchant •iietid has reared to his utter (lespaii a beatify] daughter, who, we grieve to say is on the way to a li e of sin. In early yeats the girl was taught flrst lest tons of a Chiistiah life, under the watchful care of a happy father w th the aid of a mother’s loving heart, and to her Was tendeied all the luxu ries of life, her friends making her [ every wish a stn !y, for which she was thoroughly grateful until within the last year or so, during which time she ln:8 been a source of great tot lure to her parents. Being now at the happy age of s v enteen, she is a gill who could engage the aff etions of ail who meet her, and render her home a paradise instead of the cheerless waste she has at last made it. For some t ine’ luick the metchar.t’s family has had engaged as washerwo man, a colored girl who lived not far from the young lady who is the sub ject of this sketch The daughter, from some unknown cause, paid a visit to the home of the domestic, and there m t a brother of the gill—a coarse ne gro of robust form— THE CAUSE OF ALL TIIE MISERY, who w s married and living with his wife. Strange to say an inliina. y sprung Up between this young woman and this man, which ripened into an aff-etion we cannot lei in love. The gtil listened to the ensnaring voice of I her admirer, and when a proposition rtf an elopement was broached by him she accepted without a murmur. The lime aild place of meeting was fixed, and the young lady returned !o her ho Me to make preparations ford par ture, knowing tlte infamous course she was pursuing, but not without a slight feeling of sltamei At the appointed time tite two met, and repa red at once to this side of the river, lhe girl utterly regardless of the anxiety her absence would cause iter parents, and the treaeli erous negro repudiating the claims of the wife to his fi lelity as husband. As soon as the disappearance of the young lady and her lover was learned by the parents theii agony was great, and the police were at once i. formed of the affair, and a search w is began for the wayward girl. After days of deep anxiety and torture experienced by tiifi father and mother, through which they pas-ed sleepless nights, Sergeant Ryan of t ie police force found the guilty pair in a house on I? y sic t, in tlio lower portion of the city, revel ing in their sin and shame.- They weie taken to the fifth district - tali at house i where the merchant, s’ck at heart; once more set eyeS upon his daughter. lie read her a severe but deserving lesson to which she paid no heed, tint declared her intention of remaining true to her protest ition of love for the degraded being wtio bad brought giief to the home of happiness. Not know - ing what other course to pursue, the unhappy father requested that She l>c sent to the House of Refuge, and the girl was removed to ihat iustitu.ion.* Her colored paramour was held to i l) id in a heavy sum for his appearance at court A Solitary Grave. —Wife in Clicro kee last week vve were shown the grave of Solomon, the Jew, who was murdered by unknown parties in my years ago. He lived in a wild and secluded spot on Little River, far away from civilized society and sold goods to the Indians. There he sleeps in the deep solitude of the mountains, alone; and peril i| s no relative or friend ever will I cliold his last arid solitary resting place.
