PALMETIOJSIII I: L D. js@- NOTICE.—From this date we will in ert no Sheriff's Sales without the money in advance. May Bth, 1573. ,g3£ B 5?” To make this department of our paper interesting to our-readers, we invite commu nications from this and the adjoining coun ties. Articles on the crops and everything pertaining to the well taro of tho people will be thankfully received. Notices inserted in this column as read ing matter at the rates of 15 cents per line. I\\ LMETTO, G AUGUST 8, 1872. Prof. Looney’s school will ho re sumed tit this place on Monday nest, Mrs. Mary <J. Norris, wife of Jetliro Norris, died in this county about two o’clock last Sunday. A series of meetings will commence at Hamah on next Sabbath. They promise to be interesting and benefi cial to all who may attend. The town of Fait burn is si ill im proving. Among the buildings recent ly erected is a gin house I y M essrs M'llcr & dJcKnowns. It is attached to their steam mill and will be run by steam. The Savannah News says it has been solemnly averred that the writer is yet to be born who can, in filling the po sition of local editor, furnish an item for his paper and be perfectly sure no body will take offence at it. Cotton. —Mr. Walthall purchased a bale of cotton yesterday from a negro that was picked out and ginned within the past week, and, strange to say, it only- brought five cents pi r pound ! Now, win says that. Campbell is not the banner county in the cotton line. Revival. —Tim Methodist Church at this place is enj >ying a gracious revi val which promises to last far some time. Some six or eight have con nected themselves with the church, and many are enquiring after the way of lit o everlasting. Let the good work j go on. s iv wo. - A Freedman’s school was commenced at the colored church, in this place, on last Monday. We have not learned ■ the teacher’s nun”, sex or color, but from the number of young African , which arc seen swarming around the house, at play time, we think several teachers might be kept busy. The August term ot Campbell Su perior Court commences next M inlay Attorneys, witnesses, jurors and par ties at interest ought to take due no tice and put. in an early appearance at Fait burn. We understand there is a gteat deal of business in court, and it will, iu all probability, consume the entire week to clear the dockets. We suppose the and fficulty among the people of Douglas comity in reference to the locality of the Court-house will be easily set led, us the Georgia Wes tern Railroad will run through Doug lasville. Hands are now working in five miles of that place, and it might now lie considered the permanent coun ty site. Lightning.— A short time ago, the residence of R. C. Beaves, at Fair burn, was struck by lightning. No person was injured, but the plastering and furniture in one room was badly damaged. There are three chimneys to the building, and a lightning rod attached to each one. On last Friday, a large tree stand ing in Mr. W. 11. Andrews’y aid, was also struck by lightning, giving Mrs. Andrews, and . thers who were in the house, a severe shock. Society Gossip. — Misses Lillie Mills and Mattie Jones have returned to their homes in Atlanta. Tlieir stay among us was brief but. pleasant Right glad were we to shake a hearty welcome back to Major Holloman. 1 he air and water of South Carolina added a fresh tinge to the Maj t’s cheeks, and vigor to his body. Miss Florence Jones arrived yester day from Franklin, We can console the Franklinites with the thought that their loss is our gain. In the Wrong Pew —lt scents that we committed a grave error in publish ing the proceedings of our last justice court. We only stated the facts in the case as they were furnished us by a gentleman present at the time, and we do not wish for anyone to misconstrue our object ill publishing them. It is not our wish to be regarded as “scof fers of religion,” and someone must have “looked through a glass darkly” when they perused the article in ques tion. The duties of a local icpoitcr, as ice understand them, are to furnish their patrons with local news as it transpires, and we expect to do onr duty without regard to fear, favor or affection. Onr motto is : “Let the truth be told and no harm can result tliere f cm.” Fish Culture. —Fish culture iu our town is likely to prove a success. — Those who have ponds took special pains early iu the spring to have them stocked with the kind of fish they de sired to raise, and now thousands of small fish can be seen in the water.— The large fish are doing well, and some of them are so gentle that they will rise to the water’s surface, and receive food from one’s band. At first a few died, but it was ouiy those which had been caught at a distance, and were exposed to the hot situ, while bringing to town. By another season onr citizens who are engaged in the fish culture enterorise, will begin to reap the benefit of tlieir labor. Cutting Affray—Two negro women living on Mr. Cranford’s place in Coweta county, started a fracas on last Satur day, which only resulted in a quarrel, and both patties remained quiet until they met at a church that night. At the latter place knives were resorted to and one of them received a severe cut in the neck. Stii.i. Another. —We have just been informed by Dr. Lmigiito, of this place, that two other negro women living on Mr. Cook’s farm, in the same county, adjusted their wrongs by means of an ax and a club. The ax-woman did the most dam ge and cat red her si.-tei on the tight arm. Axes and knives scent to be the favorite playthings among the colored ladies of Coweta. PALWKTIO LobuEh F. A. M.
