The Radical Pew-wow.
Last Satnrday Joel E.Griffin, spew
ed out a jumbled up series of misrep
resentations aiid lies at the Court
House incPerry." T»is the first time
we ever heard this high priest of ne
gro equality speak, and he is a much
bigger dunce than we thought he
could be. He thinks the county offi
cers all get salaries, and his strong
point is to have them reduced. His
attempts to work on the prejudices
of the negroes and ignorant whites are
'ridiculous, and unworthy of contra
diction. G. Washington Allen was
chairman, and two big greasy blacks,
Lewis Barrer and Sam Tooke were Vice
Presidents. A Sop eared negro with
his wool carded named Hill, was
scribe, and the well known John Smith
was the chief Pharisee and Ee-Publi-
can. He appointed the committee
with himself as chairman and ran the
shebang. The committee after a pro
tracted absence, reported the names
of Barnett Holleman, white; George,
Washington Bass, black, and _J. C.
McCoy, Postmaster at Perry. The
first two were nominated by acclama
tion, but the darkies went back on the
old Postmaster, and voted him down, j
they being determined to have two
colored men on the ticket, The meet
ing broke up before the third man
could be agreed on^but we ha,e an
intimation that he will be Jay-(bird)
Porter, a very polite negro with a top
knot of carded wool abont six inches
high. He is the. same negro who
nodded so eloquently during the 4th
of July noration at Fort Valley.
At the beginning of the meeting
there were about 400 negroes present,
but they soou began to get disgusted
because their white leaders seemed to
run the thing in their own interest and
at the breaking up there, were hardly
fifty in the house. The negroes seem
to be getting tired of being led by the
nose by a few white men who are Re
publicans for office only, as they
think.
The Situation.
Mb. Editor.—The time is now at

Last week a negro boy, Joe Clark
tried to marry a white girl named Re

Woods, colored. - The negro preacher,
however, refused? to unite, the incon

We have information of two eases
of a.kindred nature in the lower, part
of this County near the Pulaski line.
The details are.,, too disgusting for
public mention; bnt the next grand
jury can probably do both races of the
County a benefit by inquiring into the
affair. Such gross immorality, even
in the lowest walks'of life has a ten
dency to evil tiiat needs an immediate

his shoulder to the wheel.
Tins is „no time for cowards and
weakness We have got to be up and
doing, for it is well known the radical
party never use legitimate means in se
curing the election. There is no trick
too dirty and low down, they will not
resort to carry tneir points.
We have only to judge of the past
yea, of the very present, for witness
their hellish working all over the land,
to stir np bad blood aiid bad feelings,
between their own race and the poor
deluded negroes.
To fail in this election will be our
own fault. ' l he question for us to de
termine is, Whether we shall be repre
sented or misrepresented? If we fail,
the latter will be our portion.
ButT must call lhe attention of ev
eiy decent man to one fact, namely.
There are men to-day, in onr midst,
who are going to vote with the rabble
party. Men who have stood by their
race and party for years, are slab
bing off, and going with tbe “God
and morality” party. Can you find a
solution to this departure? Easy
enough. Office, yes office is what is
the matter. Cant possibly do with
out offiee.
Meri who two years ago cursed bit

their bosoms. Men who cursed (to his

Why all this
change of heart? There is no change.
Corruption ever existed there. They
now show their cloven foot, and will
ever be unfit for truth and decency.
Would von think it. Men who have
been supported by the Democratic
party, are takiug the nasty pill of Rad
icalism, .hoping .thereby to benefitted
in lhe way of a fat office. Take care
creatures, (I cant call you men) yon
will be sadly disappointed, for men
of jninciple a>-e going to have a say
so iu the affairs of this country.
Go on, Judas like, and may you.
prove a true Judas, and hang your
worthless bodies'to some rotten old
tree, as a ; fit type for your meanness.
You are known, still as you think
you have kept your secret. You will
be spotted henceforth.
The great party of principles can do
without you,.for we are making ac :
cession daily, from the decent colored
men. Colored men who are not go
ing to swap ofi';their principles for the
“forlorn hope” of office.
May you repent and be ashamed of
your degeneracy and forever se k
company befitting your station in life,
namely, Social Equality.
As time progresses, yon may hear
from me again. '
For the present let me assure you,
the Radicals will get the worst beating
the Seventh day of next October that
they, have had in many a day. The
die is cast,- their doomed is sealed.

Improvem nts.
The sounds of the hammer and saw
are heard in our town. When things
gettoT quietjjwe take a mallet on -
self and go to pounding on the floor.
But seriously; Perry is improving.
Mr. Cater has recently built a new
tenement house near the academy.
Charlie Cooper’s new stores are nearly
completed. Dr, Jobson is improving
his office and putting up new steps.
Mr. W. D. Pierce has jnst fixed np
Lis store licely and put a stock of
goods in : it;—and Rumor has it that
Mr. G. W. Singleton is soon to- build
a new Post Office and Custom House.
A Ditty.
During these hard times it is tbe
especial duly of each house owner to
keep his property insured. Think of
ybur desolation when your home is
destroyed in a moment, and your fam
ily houseless. The annual premium
amounts to but a trifle, and if you fail
to be burned o.nt ynu are sHd the
gainer. Butin ease you loose, you
can collect your, policy, and build you
another- honse at once. N-'W is the
time to. insure, The season for fires
is at hand- To go uninsured is to
gamble, ijrith fate,"but to insure is to
pay for-a security against accident or
incendiarism which nothing else can
give. ‘-‘Can yon afford to insure

the acre and that the crop was gen
erally good in his county.
The cotton crop is bound to be
short—generally estimated at a half
crop. At least half of it is now open,
and is being badly injnred by the
heavy rains tLafc have been falling
for a week, and from present pros
pects, are likely to continue for a
while.
The short crop and low price indi
cate a scarcity of money this winter,
which will be favorable to emigrants
who have money, as it will enable
them to buy land and supplies cheap
er than usual. It is thought that
corn will sell generally at §1 per-bush-
eL
The people ot this county are ex
ceedingly anxious to have emigrants
come among them. An Immigration
Association has been formed, bat I
know bnt little about its -movements.
They propose to aid: emigrants com
ing to this county, by seUing them
land and supplies cheaper, and on
better terms, than to other people.—
Many are oxious to turn off tbe freed-
men and employ white men to culti
vate their lands, from the fact that
the freedmen are getting more and
more negligent every year.
Improved, lauds are cheaper here
than in any country I have ever seen.
Good improvement can bo bought at
§4 and §5 per acre. -
This county abounds iu iron ore the
best quality. It has produced fifty
per cent of as good iron as was ever
made. No manufactories are in op
eration, on aceonut of the inconve
nience and scarcity of coal. But ge
ological surveys are now being made,
that will, no doubt, result in the .re
moval of this difficulty, arid many
others which -have hitherto been a
drawback to Texas.
The public spirit in Texas is being
thoroughly aroused, and the people
are awakening to the importance of
gener.il improvements. .
Communities, towns, and even cit
ies are springing up like magic in va
rious par Is of the State. Some places
which twelve months ago had nit an
inhabitant now boast of their- thou
sands.
Four years ago there"were, perhaps,
not moie than two hundred miles of
railroad in the State.) whereas there
are now fifteen hundred and others
rapidly imshing" forward.
