QUITMAN, SEPTEMBER 6,1872.
Son's of Tuyn’KasNC*.—Members of Quitman Di
vision, No.!), will inrot in the new bail (Masonicl
till* {Frida, ] evening. It is elegantly BtUal up,
and will be found very comfortable. A full at
tendance is desired, ax an address will be deliv
ered by the P. W. P., as per previona appoint
ment.
McNeil's Csrd.-~-We publish a abort card
from our esteemed townsman, D. U. McNeil,
Esq., withdrawing his name, for the present, ns
a candidate for County Treasurer. Re very
correctly nays that the day of election for coun
ty officials la too remote for caodidatea to be
harraasing. the people with their anppoaed
claims, Ac .on them for their suffrage. It ia a
very sensible "conclusion, audit eharactcriatic
of the writer.
Fire Extinocishkr.-- Mr. F-. Ynlee. the agent
for the sale of BabcoeVs Fire Extinguisher,
gave a number oltfce citizens of Quitman a prac
tical Hluetiatidh ot the 'power and utility of his
aparatn.e, a few days ago. A quantity of straw
and shavings were thoroughly saturated with
kerosene oil, and Ignited. The Extinguisher
was then brought to bear upon the burning
mass, and in an incredible short time, not a
spark of fire could be found.
UsnicsL Mr.rnxo.—We are informed that the
negroee will hold a m,ass m-eting at Quitman, on
next Saturday, for the purpoee of nominating
candidates for the Eegislatme and county offi
cers. It is surmised by many, that they will
place in the field candidates of their own race;-
aad in tuch event tbc whites will perceive the
necessity for harmony. Prejudice and petty
feeling must be laid aside, and all unite fur the
supremacy of the white race. In such a contest
the duty of every man will be plain.
Tax Assessment. ---It will be seen by the offi
cial order of "Judge E. It. Harden, that an as
sessment of ohe hundred per cent, on the State
tax, has been made for county purposes tor the
present year. This is fire per cent, less than
was recommended by the last Grand Jury.
Josvru Fineoan A Co.—The card of these
gentlemen will be found in the Banner to-day.
It is a reminder to their old patrons that they
are sti 11 engaged in the city of Savannah as
Cotton Factors and Commission Merchants, and,
as heretofore, will carefully and faithfully trans
act all business entrusted to them. It is a re
sponsible firm, and will give satisfaction in ev
ery instance.
Wni. H Stark fc. Co
s gentlcmen’notify the people throughout
this section, through the columns of the Banner,
that they are still in the field competing for the
custom ot the people. As is w-ell known, they
are eery extensive dealers in groceries, as well
as cotton factors and general commission mer
chants This is one of (he most reliable and re
sponsible firms in the city of Savannah, and its
agent at Quitman. Col. E. C. Wade,' will facili
tate business transactions.
S. Miller’s Furniture More.
We direct attention’to the business card of:
Mr.'S. S. M U.LEK, the most extensive dealer in fui
niture in the city-of Savannah. lie can supply ‘
any article.of household furniture, from a cheap ,
chamber set to a magnificent parlor "outfit-- and
all of the latest styles, llis prices, too. arc very
reasonable. Orders will be filled with care and
dispatch. If you are in need of any article in
this line, give Mr. Miller a trial-- whom you
will find a olever, courteous gentleman.
Womßck’t High School.
Mr Emmett Womack has had bis school house
repaired, and the exercises will be resumed on
next Monday , the 9th inst. ne solicits the pat
ronage of his former patrcnsnnd Ibe public gen
erally. He is a good teacher, a fine discipline
rian, and will give satisfaction to parents.
Thk Catertiu-ar.—This destructive worm is
at work everywhere, hundreds of acres of cot
ton are completely stripped of iesves and young
fruit. Never before have we known the destruc
tion to be so speedy and complete. This sec
tion of Georgia and Middle Florida will not yield
more than half the number of bales of cotton
that (he condition of the crop two months ago
justified UK"t6 CxpOit.
Tfce Snprrinf Court. -
Owffig tdi a change in the time for holding
rinfterfdt Courts in the various Counties of this j
Judicial CirCutt, the Fall term of Brooks Su
perior Court will commence on Monday, the Knit
Intt. The change Is objectionable to many per
sons, but owing to the tact that ons or more ad
ditional counties were added to the Circuit.j
there existed no remedy for the evil Our Rep
resentative, Capt. 11l NTBti, endeavored to ,ar
tange a more favorable time fOt the holding Os
Court in this c -unty, but the Committee to
whom the matter was referred, could not waver
In duty, and tbc Legislature adopted the re
port made by said Committee.
THe Tsws of Quitman.
We have been unable, as yet, to procure a
copy of the Act recently adopted hv the I.egis- :
Utttre, for the extension of the limits of the
town of'Quitman. When received it will be
published as a matter of interest We are in
formed, however, that so far as our authorities
are concerned, the Act was put into practical
effect oe last Monday, and all the ordinances
and laws previously existing, declared in force
over, and to be respected by all inhabitant#
within one mile of the Court-honse in every di
rection. The Chairman 'of the Board of Com
missioners is also elevated to the. position of
Mayor, and bas separate jurisdiction over all
offenders against the peace, dignity and laws
the city.
McMCInL Election.—At an election held in
Quitman on Monday last, to fill a vacancy in the
Town Council, created by the death of Capt.
C'.’.rrrrES, Mr. I. S. Ncaman was elected. He
will make an efficient and faithful official.

Valuable ffiiita.
A regular habit of body is absolutely essential
to physical health and clearness ol intellect.
Nor is this all. Beauty of person cannot co
exist with uu unnatural condition of the bowels.
A free pfetaiuro ot the refuse matter of the sys
tem through these natural waste pipes, is as
uecessary to the purity of the body as tbe tree
passage of tin* off.il of a city through its sewers
is nero9«arv to the health of its inhabitants.
Indigestion is the primary cause of moat of
the diseases of the primary organs, and one of
it* most common results is constipation. This
eompiaiflt, besides being dangerous in itself, has
many disagreeable concomitants—such as an
unpleasant breath a sallow skiu.contaminating
blood and bile, be norrtudds, headache, memory,
and general dcbili y.
Hostetter’n Stomach Bitters remove all these
evils by removing their immediate cause in the
digestive organs, and regulating the action of
the intestines. The combination of properties
in this celebrated preparation is one of its chief
merits. It is not merely a stimulant or a tonic,
or an antibillious agent, or a nervine, or a blood
depurent, or a cathartic. fc but all these curative
elements judiciously blended in one tptwerful
restorative, it lends activity and vigor to the
inert and enervated stomach, relieves the ail
menUry canal ot its obstructions, and gives tone
to the membrane which lines it, gently stimu
lates the liver, braces the nerves, and cheers the
animal spirits. No o her remedy possesses such
a variety of hygienic‘virtues. It is to these
characteristic virtues that it owes its prestige
as a household medicine. Experience has prov
ed that it is as harmless as it i« efflencions, KnC
hence it is as popular with the weaker sex as
with the stronger.
Hostetler’s Stomach Bitters are sold in bottles
only, and the trade mark blown in the gla sand
engraved on the label is the test ol genuineess.
