Illuirt rating the fearful consequences
of this Itinlily ictiil ntiVo measure, tlic-
Pliil.idelpliiu Poxl tells the following up
oil the ledger of that, city :
This fearful llweat reminds oh of a sto
ry ahont Mr. Swain yours ago, when he
was the proprietor ot the Ledger. By
his comae in regard to some public
matter he lmd offended a number of read
ers, one of wl orn he niet on Chestnut
street, and thus accosted him :
‘Mr. Swain, I’ve stopped tho Ledger.’
‘What is that, »ir?’
•I’ve stopped the Ledger,’ was the
stern reply.
‘Great heavensl’said Mr. Swain, 'my
dear sir, that won't do. Come with me
to tho ofliJo. This must ho looked into.’
And, taking the man with him, lie en
tered the office at Third and Uhes’nnt
streets. There they found tho clerks
busy at their desks; then they ascended
to tho editorial rooms and composing
rooms, where all was as usual; finally
they descended to the press rooms, where
the engineers were at work.
‘1 thought yon told tun you had stop
ped the Ledger,’su’d Mr. Swain.
‘So I have,’ said the offended subscri
ber.
‘1 don’t see the stoppage. Tho Led
ger seems to he going on.’
‘Obi I mean to say—that is, that I
—ah—had slopped taking it.’ v .
’ls that alii exclaimed Mr. Swain.
‘Why, my dear sir, you don’t know how
you alarmed me. As for your individu
al subscription I care very lirtle. Good
day sir, and never make such lash a«-
sertiona again.’
Another Richmond is in tho field, hoot
ed aud spuirotl for the Presidential con
flict. President Grant and Mr. Greeley
should not as yet carelessly assume that
they are the only contestants, or over
look the fact that in many races, both
of horses ami humans, the despised ‘field’
linn Como in ahead, much to the surprise ;
of all parties For, in addition to Mr.'
Groeslieck, Mr. IVaek, Mr. Davis, and
Mrs. Woodhtill, a possible competitor
appears in tho person of ono Ohauncey
Barns, who styles himself the ‘‘American
Prophet of tire Lord,” and who was nom
inated for President bv a religions con-j
ventifin, with the ‘Lord of llosls’ as its 1
announced presiding officer, at Vineland, !
N. «T„ last week. Little is yet known I
concerning the character of said Barns,
or tho principles which controlled or
actuated the delegates to this supernat
ural convention. It is understood, how
ever, that the candidate proposes ‘re- I
modeling the Constitution and Govern- ,
mont of the United States by roles of!
virtue, honor, and peace, and turning!
her men-of-war into fishing smacks for i
the benefit of the poor.’ This, it must j
be confessed, is a great perspective im
provement on the statesmanship and j
naval policy of the present Administra
tion; and, when taken in connection
with Mr. Barns’ monopoly of the super
human assistance which the Grautites
so sorely need during tho present cam
paign, may well cause the President se
rious alarm. Rut the people would like
to Know note about this Prophet of the
Lord. Can he not be persuaded to stamp
the country with Demosthenes? —Jioslon
PoOl.
The expression often used that oil ex
plodes, convoys a wrong idea. The oil
does not explode. Ao oil may even ex
tinguish a burning match when thrown
into it, arid yet be highly dangerous to
ho used as a horning fluid. It is the va
por of these oils mixed with air lhat is
dangerous, ns far as exposition in con -
coined. While a partly tilled lamp has
the portion shove the oil filled with a
mixtuic of vapor and air it may explode.
When a lamp is tilled while lighter!, the
mixture of air aud vapor in the can or
tiller explodes upon coming in contact
w ith the flame: the oil itself does not ex
plorle, II ugh it does serious injury when
rent feted to the explosion.
BEAUTY OF OLD PEOPLE. I
Men and women make their own beau
ty or their own ugliness. Lord Lytton
speak* iti one of his novels, of a man
‘‘who was uglier than he bad any htibi .
| ness to bp;’ and if he could but read it,
I every human being carries his life in his
! face, and is good looking or the reverse
as that life has been good or evil. On
■nir features the fine chisel of thought
and emotion arc eternally at work,
i Beauty is not the monopoly of blooming
young men and of white and pink maid
ens. There is a slow growing beruty
Which only comes to perfection in ohl
ago. Grace belongs to no period of life,
and goodness improves tlie longer it ex
ists. 1 have seen sweeter smiles from a
lip of seventy than upon a lip of seven
teen.
There is the beauty of youth and the
beauty of holiness—a beauty much more
j seldom met, and more frequently found
! in ti c arm chair by the fire, with the
grandchildren around its knee, than in
ihe ballroom or prometiadg. Husband
and wife, who have fought the world
: side by aide, who have made common
| htock of joy or sorrow, and ago together,
i are frequently found curiously alike in
j personal anpentanee, and. iu pitch and
I tone of voice—just as twin, pebbles on
the beach, exposed to the same tidal in
fluences, are each other’s second self.
Lie has gained a feminine something
which brings Ida manhood into lull relief.
She lias gained a masculine something,
which acts as a foil to her womanhood.

Emeralder—You’re a lawyer, brent

coming, and thinks l.e will aay yes at a

Reporter—Yes.
Emeralder—Well, did yon iver hear
of lawyers (pronounced like liar) gettin’

and shame the divil.
Reporter—Well, I don’t know as I
ever did. Did yon ever hear of an liish
man getting there?
Emeralder—Yes, 1 heard one once.
Reporter (briskly)—How was that?
Emeralder—Why, there was a fellow
once who lived in Ireland, lie was as
noble, kitidhem ted a mail as ever you
saw, and when he died everybody hi and a
good word to say lor bitn, the praist ah
solved him, and lie went straight to hiv
in, and—
Reporter—How do you know he did?
Emeralder ( angrily)- Ain’t I tellint

he got time. When the people that;
lives in heaven found that an Irishman .
was there it raised a fine rumpus, ami !
they determined to put him out. .Hfn |

Pious Impulses iu a Squill •
By a squall in Delaware Bay last
week, while sailing in a yacht, two young
men were overtaken. At Nazareth
church, on Twelfth street, Philadelphia,
at public worship they .had occasionally
been present. From the way things I
looked, tho capsizing of their shallop
was very nearly inevitable.
’Bill,’ said one to the other, 1 1his is so- •
riolts business; can j cm pray?’
‘No, I can’t; I’ve heard Joe Quinn do
j it, and I’ve listened to < Bill Dost; but 1
I can’t do it myself.’

| For God’s sake do something.’

let’s take up a collection.’
