Our sanctum wan honoied oil Monday
bv a visit from the groat standard bear

Wo were happy to find him clioorful and
sanguine of a Democratic victory in No
vember. He is performing yeoman ser
vice, and is determined, that if our ban
iior trails in defeat, no man shall point
the finger of derision, ami s.iy, “ Thou

weighing, we presume, upwards of two
hundred pounds, has a well developed
head, a keen piercing eye, honor is
stamped upon his blow, and with Milton
we exclaim—

The October Lltctlou.
One week from next Wednesday the
election for Governor and Representa
tives takes place. The people have had
sufficient time to thoroughly infjr
themselves as to tho issues helm r
country, and common seiiso points out j
the path of duty.
So fur as tlie Gubernatorial contest h
concerned, in our judgment it is mine
vital to the interest of the State to se
cure the ro-olcctiun of Governor Smith
than to carry Georgia for Greeley. With
a Democratic Governor, Georgia may
prosper even though «c have a Radical
President at Washington. Dawson A.
Walker may he to chilly, a gentleman,
and possessed of ability, hut lie is an
avowed Radical, and heartily endorses
the vite administration of President
Grant. Therefore he is extremely obnox
ions, and no Southern man can, with
honor, lefiain Ironi aid : ng in his over
whelming defeat. We know our people
are right at heart, but tin* strange polit
ical ussi ciatiotm recently indulged in,
have made them lukewarm in the cause.
They must awake to the importance) of llm
issue presented. Our standard bearer;
must receive the vote of every white man 1
in the Slate; for a defeat, at this time in ;
Georgia, would demorah/.o and ibshcart
en the advocates of Constitutional gov- J
eminent at the North, and the cm.sc
qucnccs would be terrible.
As to the legislature, tho indications
arc that the Democracy will be success
ful throughout the State. Asa gent rail
ru'e, tlie paity in the various coin. tic-'
have placed their best anil most popular)
men in the field, and as already stated, •
the judications are that the next Legists
ture wilt be overwhelmingly Democratic
In Ibis county, Capt. Huutcr, the no mi
nee, is well known, and although there
were objections r»is< and aga'i.st him on
account of certain local measures advo
cated by him in the Legislature, since
he has been abroad among the people
and made necessary explanation, those
who wore inclined to murmur I ave t , en •

comity is now pretty thoroughly united
in fstding. and will, doubtless, re-elect
Capt. lluoter as their Representative to
the I^rorislalure.

Congress, tool; the stand, and for one
hour enchained the attention of the au

the political situation. The records of
Greeley and Grant worn ben fly review

interest prompted a chet rfu] and hearty
support of Mr. Greeley. At times the
General grew eloquent—and an allusion
to the braveiy and determination of the
