with i is usual promptness, advertises in
to-day's Banner, that the contract will
be given to the lowest bidder on Satur

General Presentments —ln another
column will he f nnd the General Pre
sentments submitted bv .he Gland Juiy
last week _ They contain sensible and
timely suggestions.
Epizootic —Nearly all of Mi. Thrash
er’s norse« have recovered from the
horse dis--a.se. We Understand that
Major William Jones, of this eounty, lost
a fine mule, the present week, from the
same disease.
Bcggy SroLEN Some evil hearted i--
dividual stole a-splendid huggy from Mr
J. C. Thrasher, last week Hr was on
a visit to the residence of Mr. D B.
Carroll, three miles west of Quitman,
and his buggy was left in front of th.-
house. W lien about starting for home,
at 10 o’clock, p. m., the buggy was
missing, and no trace of the same can
be fooud.
Election Tickets. —The election for
County officers takes place on the sth > f
January next, and candidates shoo'd be
prepared with printed tickets for the ac
casion. We have facilities to print
them iu any form desired, and can sup
ply any demand on short notice.
Temperance. —Rev. S. S. Sweet. G.
Chaplain of the order of Sons of Tem
perance of Georgia, returned it his home
in Quitman on Wednesday morning.
He had been absent for ten days, attend
lag the Temperance Conventions recent
ly held iu Chattanooga. Tenn., and At
lanta, Ga The labors of the respective
conventions were laborious, and results
very important to the various ten per
ance orders.
Change op Candidates. —lt will be
seen by announcement in today's Ban
nxr, that Mr. Sam’l J. Harrell, the Deni
ocratic nominee for Sheriff, declines the
Domination, and that Mr R. B. Wooten,
the efficient Tax Receiver during the
past two years, takes his place ou the
ticket as a candidate for Sheriff.
Brook.* County Court.
On last Saturday evening Willis Red-]
dick (colored) was arraigned before tit's
Court, his Honor, E. R. Harden, presid
ing, on a charge of aiealing a bag of cot
ton, the property of the Estate of John
McMullan. Maj. J C. Gallaher and
Capt. H. G. Turner appeared for the
prosecution, and Col. W. B. Bonnot and
Capt. J, H. Hunter for the defence.
There was no direct evidence adduced
going to prove that Reddick stole the
cotton, but it was identified as the prop
erty of the party designated above, and
found in the possession of the prisoner,
and no satisfactory explanation given
thereof. Toe inference, therefore, wns
that the prisoner was guilty, and Judge
Harden required him to pay a fine of
twoknndred dollars. We understand
the fine was promptly paid.
A Youthful Convict.
A young man by the name of John D
Wooten, was arraigned before the Supe
rior Court of this county last week,
charged with the crime of "petty larce
ny." He was ably and eloquently de
fended by Major Gallaher, but a jury of
his country men felt constrained to ren
der against him a verdict of ‘ Guilty,”
althoogh conpled with a prayer for mer
cy; and Judge Alexander sentenced him
to labor in the Penitentiary for a term of
two and a halt years. The unfortonate
young man, who is not more than 22 or
23 years of age, is related to some of the
most respected families o§ this county,
bnt his dissolute habits so completely
estranged them, that there was not one
to befriend him in the honr of bis great
est need. No eye was dimmed with
tbe tear of sympathy—no Riendly baud
extended to aid him in adversity—no
tongue uttered the heart cheering sylla
ble, “Hope.” The Coort—poverty’a in
evitable resort—furnished him atle
conosel, who done all within the power
of man to save him from disgrace —but
it was of no avail. It was a sad sight
to see one Iso ’ young—one who might
have made himself a ose’n! citizen and
an ornam- nt in society—branded as a
"Thief,” and sentenced to companionship
with convicts the most depraved, just as
be bad entered man’s estate.
Vice is a monster of eo frightful msin,
As to be bated needs but to be seen;
Vet seen too oft. familiar with her face,
We first eLdare, then pity, then embrace.
The Criminal Docket.
The accommodating and efficient Clerk
ol the Superior Court, S. W. Brooks,
has kindly furnished ua the following
official records of true bills and special
picseuimeiits, found by the Grand Jury
empnnneted for 1 -st week, to wit:
Bi vaut Sherley, Assault and battery.
Elbert Patrick, Assault and battery.
0, P- Smith, Simple Larceny.
John D. Wu- ten, Simple Larceny
Tried, found guiltv «"d sentenced to
penitentiary for two und a half years.
Sherrod Moody, Assault with intent to
M order.
John H. Godwin, Adulti ry and F-ir

John Voorhees, Cheat and Swindler,
Tim. Uardee, Mi-demeanor.

Matrimony.
0-ip we Idii.g last week, another the
pieseut, and several docketed for the
immediate lnture, are the inteiestiug
topics of c overs -tion in Quitman at
I resent The young and tiie aged (if re
port do- 8 not hear fa'se witness, and
thiß tribunal believes she does not,) ap
pear lo have just realized the fact, thal
roatiimuny is a good thing—“single
bl- ssedtiess” a misnomer—aod old bach
elors, < Id maids, and widowers, are very
unnecessary appendages to a piogr-s
--sive community, desir us of an iucieased
population. And therefore, for some
time to como, it is expected that the
law b “license’' and “parsons” will be in
demand. Ere spring puts on her ver
dure, we believe that all persons in this
community, of the required uge, will
have secured their companions for the
j uiney of life, and started on the pil
grimage with the soothing strain of
“Number four," by the "Quitman Cornet
Band " II a solitary uisatsfi.d soul re
main, however, we will bid him or her
tie of good cheer, and await the goo-l
time coming in the uncertain future.
RnpenorCoiirt—Second Week.
The second w. ek of the September ad
journed Term of Brooks Superior Court,
commenced on Monday last, and adjourn
ed on Wednesday at noon. But little
business of importance to the public was
transacted. Too case of the negro wo
man vs. the A.& G. R. R. Company, re
ferred to last w-ek, in which damage to
the amount of $lO 000 was alleged, was
ruhd out on the ground of jurisdiction,
the Judge maintaining, we belie vo, that
the suit should have b en instituted
in the county where the damage is al
leged to have be-en incurred.
Toe "General Presentments," as sub
milted by the Grand Jury (or this sec
ond week, contained nothing of any inu
porlance. They were of no consequence
whatever. The jury was so well satis
fied ot the fact, that they requ sted no
publication should be given to them.
A Christmas Tree. —lt has been sug
gested hy several of the citizens ol Quit
man, thal for the entertainment and
amusement of the children, and perhaps
some of the older ones, that airange
ments be made to have one of the tirue
honored “Christmas Trees” in the Court
House on the evening of the 251 b of De
cember. We most cordially approve
the suggestion as a gt od and timely one,
and will suggest our clever townsman,
Capt. Thos. 1. Livingston, a* oiieeml
ncntly qualified to make all necessary
arrangements and manage the enliie
affair.
QriTMAN Factory.— We have no official
report of the action had by the stock
holders of this enterprise, at their meet
ing held on Monday last, but rumor
avers that the President and Directors
were authorized to procnie additional
capital—sl2.ooo—on guaranteed stock
drawing twelve per cent, iiterest; and
in the event of a failure to realize funds
from this source, an assignee is to be ap
pointed, and the properly sold to the
highest bidder, for the benefit of credi
tor.
We may, at a future day, have consid
erable to say in regard to the manage
ment of this enterprise.
