The New York l>oy Hook says that n
clergyman of that city (probably tl e im
maculate Bi-echer.) in a recent Sunday
evening discourse, to'd his hearers that
“no previous age if the world pi siu-ssed
so many virtuous and unsc'fish patriots
as onr country can boast of at the prrs
entt'me.” Wo do not look for much
knowledge of history in a clergyman,
but we are not atlo to g vo this one
credit for go much Ignorance as his lan
guage would seem to imply. We must
charge his reckless statement to his por
tiziiu character, more than his ignorance,
lid would eulogize Satan, if he were u
leading member of his political party.
We grieve to sny tl at the American pul
pit has done more than its share of puff
ing into farno many of the stupendous
scoundrels who now hold high 1 flicial
places—men nf-*uch notorious had char
acter tig would have caused their banish
ment from any of tho ancient Republics
of Greece and Rome; and which would
probably cause their expulsion from
office in any European government of
the present day. Many bad men have
occupied high places in every ugo of the
world, im doiiht j but history makes tis
acquainted with no nge, or nation, iu
which si ninny unprincipled vagabonds,
so many ignorant, vulgar and absolute
ly low fellows were enthroned iu the
most cMiltcd offie-s, as in America at
this moment. There are men occupying
si-ats on tno benches of the Federal i
Courts who arc not even lawyers, and j
others whose moral character is not, and |
never was, above the grade of tho city i
brothel. Official Stations, from high to
i low, ate filled with drunkenness, pecula
tion, ignorance, into'irance and every
degrading vice. It is un appalling truth,
lint every body knows it to he true.
What use, then is it for the political par
tizan pulpits to attempt 'to whitewash
these sepulchre* *>l corruption? They
can deceive none but the most ignorant.
But, as ignorance of the tiue state of
public affairs is a prevailing vice of our
country at the present time, this custom
of pulpit eulogy of < fficial incompelcncy
and rascality is a source of irreparable
mischief. What a degrading delusion
to imagine that we are progressing in
all the public and private virtues, when
we are absolutely plunging backwards
into a bottomless gulf of corruption and
depravity! There is no such idea of
public virtue extant in onr country as
; prevailed in the ancient Republics bun
! dreds of years before the Christian era.
