MENINGITIS.
Tim Savannah Ncwh learning that Dr.
J. G. Thomas hud made a }#>.l mortem
examination of a aut ject of Meninifilio al
the Savannah Hospital, in pieaencc of a
number of tho medical faculty of that
city, addrwmd a note to Dr. T. in ref
erence to Ihe matter, soliciting an ex
press-n of big vi'owb, and also calling
his attention to a card from Dr. J. J.
Knott, of Atlanta, prescribing a method
ol treatment, pronounced to bo the best,
and giving some explanation as to the
character of the disease. To this re
quest the News received the following
reply, which will be read with great in
terest by the public generally, as it con
tains informal ion of great importance:
Savannah, February 16, 1873.
1)ka« Sib :—Your note is ut hand re
questing my views upon the subject of
meningitis, and asking the result of a
poet mortem examination of a c .se, of
tbis disease, which you say you have
jnst learned I made at the hospital.
I have no opinion about this malady,
which can, in any sense, bo icgarded as
peculiar—not wrilh regard lo its treat
ment, but in view of its somewhat wide
spread prevalence. I am willing to
throw out smno well established hints,
wldch you seem to think may be of some
good to the public.
As the name (meniegilis) of this dis
ease implies, it is un infl .munition of
the meningitis (or membrane) ol the
biniu and spinal cord. It is therefore,
more properly called ccrcbro* spinal
meningitis.
The communication of Dr. Knott to
which you call my attention, nt in< to
dispute llie idea of its lining no inflam
mation. He says, addressing himself to j
physicians, thai wo "must discard lie
idea of its being un inflamation,’’ anil
treat if accordingly. I have only had
an opportunity 'of making an autopsy
upon this one ease, but am free to s y
that there were abundant evidences of
inflammation in Ihis case. I opened
the brain andexamiued every particle of
it in the presence of several ol our phy
sicians, and there was but one opinion
expressed, which was that it was a i igl.
grade of inflammation of certainly two
of the membranes—the arachnoid and
the pin mater, which are the Iw . iunei
mem hi ones lining the brain. These Uv .
membranes extend into the sirmil col
umn, which wo i.lso ex .mined, and
found b e same results ol i fbimmaioiy
action there. N w there are portions
of tho n. evolutions, or sulci, ns they are
called, win re those membranes do mil
obtain, and in lln se wo found no evi
deuce ol inflatnmnt on, showing that it
is confined lo the-e membranes, parlie- 1
uUrly to the ui achno and.
As far as my obs rvation goes, which j
has not been wrv large, it appears to he
a winter disease, and nioic likely to pro ,
vail in cold, damp seasons ol winter in
early spring. Ido not remember ever
ssidiig a case in summer, a"d am very
much inclined to the opinion that b e
large maj tity of the cases can be traced
to exposure. In some places, f..r years
past, boili in Ihis country and Europe,
it has exhibited a decided epid -into ten
denev, and for this reason physicians
have assigned to it a vpectfe emsn. It
may nave a spec tic cause, a pois n, for
instance, lurking in the atmosphere, but
if a ■, like the causes of many other dis- i
easts, we luive never found it out. Mill
as rein nked above, the only existing 1
cause that 1 have been uid-i lo assign lo I
it is exp sure lo cold and dampness, and
tberef re great core should be exercised!
in this reguid. ami particularly to avoid
cold, damp drafts of ail while sleeping,
and alter gelling wet to change to dry
cloti.es as soon as possible.
As recants '*'»» *— • o.cill > t this dis
ease, my impress ions are that most of
the remedies that have been suggested,
and the plans of treatment laid down as
•sure cures,’ have thus tar {proved very
niisaiisfacimy. Ail t e cases certainly
cannot te treated alike with any proba
bility ot siieci ss. l lie physician mus:
