Xars Items.
We would be gla.il if our fri- ads in
Brooks and any of the neighboring coun
ties would send us short items of l-v, ,
that might be interesting to the l pie.
It is not expci ted that an editor veil fill
up his paper with long essays on abstract
subjects. Evm if ho did, they would
generally be very dull and nnintoresting
to his readers. The principal object "1
a newspaper, as the name would indicate,
should be to convey to its subscribers
information of what is going on in tic
country and the world at large. And.
as a general rule, thc.sc incidents or oc
currences that concern the so tion n ; r
est to us, or appertain to those we arc
acquainted with, arc most inter and ng to
us. Many a man don't care a fig tor 1
opinion of the editor, hut he wants t !;■
paper so as to keep posted in the news
of the day. True, a large portion of:
everv paper is made up of extracts from
its exchanges, still each ought to bo will
ing to contribute its share of original
news items. It Is <oily thus that gen.o
information as to the whole country can
be kept. up. We trust, our friends will,
aid us in this r< .-poet, and thus dial -s c .
to make the Banner more interest ing t
our subscribers, and more valuable to;
those with whom we exchange.
Jl. //. Hardaway.
Judge H. Hardaway, of Ti 10Bins- I
ville, was in our town last Monday. M e
regret that we were absent from our:
office when he call !. W<■ ui: ’ r :
that he is acting Prc ddoul of lie- A ■
R. R.—Col. Scriveu being absent in Eu
rope, on business connected with flic
road. Judge Hardaway is well known in
this section as a high-toned gentleman ot
sterling integrity, great energy and 10 .
rate business capacity.
Tana Council.
This body held its regular ii-..«thly
meeting on Monday night, and sum of
its deliberations were of an important'
character, and doubtless a dt ta;:
port of the business transacted, wmp 11
read with interest by many of our readers,
but our limited space will permit us to
report only a few of the most important
proceedings, in a promiscuous way.
Pray arty Tax.
The report of the Town Treasurer to
the Council on Monday night, shows that
the value of all persona! and real total
as given in, amounted to 8254,000, and
a tax of one-tenth of one per cent, was j
assessed, which will bo collected during i
the month of October.
County Court. -We dropped m at
the County Court on Tuesday last, and
found his Honor, Judge Harden, pre
siding with his accustomed dignity and
ability. The lawyers on cither side dis
played great learning, much z :d for their
clients, and a wonderful gift of continu
ance —all of which was endured with re
markable patience by the presiding Judge, j
We tarried for a while, but heard not a
line of poetry or an anecdote. So we
quietly withdrew to look for other-enter- i
tainment.
Hoy Tax.
At its meeting on Monday night, the
Council asessed a special tax of ti 1,50
upon all dogs within the incorporate lim
its —including the collar furnished to
each dog upon which the tax is paid.—
Every dog caught upon the street-: with
out one of these collars on, will be taken
up by the Marshal, and if not claimed and .
the tax demand settle ! by someone, put
out of the way.
fiSr See the addition of speesfi .-at.ons
made this week to the note* to contract
ors for the re-covering of the Court House.
er See notice to debtors and creditors
of the estate of Samuel Steven-.
Attention Hoys,
No more sling-shots or kites are to be
used in Quitman as instruments of inno
cent amusement. The Council has wise
ly concluded that for the protection of
windows and other favorite targets, and
persons driving spirited horses, they must
be stopped. The Marshal was author
ized to destroy every one he could run up
with.
An’lowa farmer chewed the end of his
hoe-handle into splinters when he discov
ered that the tobacco plants he had been
assiduously cultivating for weeks were
nothing hut million stalks. - l-Leituiujc.
1\ e know a Brooks County man who is
I a farmer, lawyer and sheep raiser, who
i lias been cultivating hull grass for sugar
J cane. When his little son explained so
I him his mistake, we don’t know whether
he “chewed the end of his hoe-liamlle” or
not, but. we are afraid he will want to
“chaw" us when he sees this piece. We
resolved, however, to tell it Tm him and
risk it, even if we have to hide out for a
few days.
N. B. We like to have forgotten to
mention that said farmer, lawyer, sheep
raiser, Ac., Ac., generally makes large
arrangements in the Summer for grind
ing his eane in the Fall, but by Septem- j
ber, concludes he had better save it. for ;
seed. For the credit of Brooks County, 1
we will say, he is not "iudigiuous,” but j
“exotic.”

1!Y A CHURCH MOUSE.
Having end :so and -v< .1 monte ill.

pasture than our town churches afford, i
and having ret uperatod my impoverished j
strength, I decided to return “to scenes j
that were old, and paths that were Tumi!- j
iar.” Bo after consultation with the
madame, tic- trip was determined upon.;
And after blushing my brownish cost, j
and trimming my whisk- rs, for both had
been go ally neglected in the country, l
started upon my journey. * It, was a per- i
ileus one. There were hawk and buz
zard, snake an-l irog, dog and cat, and
He • mis cubit , i -r; •■hi ii fire ■ ■ 1 -

mouse’s family. All IRso had to be
avoided, and it was with great diflieulfy
that I escaped. At last I reached a;
church, and was just about so sing,
“Through many dangers, toils and snare.; ;
1 have already come,” and to enter in at
the accustomed (Utterance,wlku io! I ‘li -
covered it was cloced. And there stood |
a gro.it big white thing, looking up- |
wards, and on top of it was a swollen:
jilaee, lit a wind-gall on a horse’.: leg.
"Goodii lie 1” I exclaim'd, “what,
docs all this mean r” As 1 was gazing |
upon it with astonishment, a towfi luouse i
with sleek coat., steps out and asks, “Why ;
gaze ye up into heaven r” This startled :
me so that I came near losing my bal, - !
ancc. After salutations, he remarked,
“ You’re from the country, I see. That’s
a steeple, lifting its beautiful proportion;;
heavenwards.” It reminds me of D aeon ,
i Brown’s sermon that I heard long y o ,
ago, about something he called a “ Whited.
Sfcpnlehre,” beautiful without. I won
der if it is as white inside ? My new ac
quaintance continued, “This is emblem
atical of those who are striving for a
home beyond the other blue, with gar
ments white and pure. And that a!.<,
is the spire, representing him who is con
stantly pointing the people to the better
life.”
Ah me, Deacon Brown did say some
thing about someone who was alway s
pointing people to heaven, but never
went themselves. I reckon he meant a
spire.
How things have changed since trio
good old days. T was about to retreat, j
when my new made friend insisted that j
the entrance for all good mice, had been j
changed, and he would conduct me in.
Just at the entrance, my friend disap- !
peared a moment, and far over on anoth- j
er joist he sat dripping wet. I hesitated, i
Ho remarked, “You see I have just gone j
down into the water and come up out of
the water. This is our faith, and thus
all good mice come hither. It is neces- .
gary, sir, necessary.”
I discovered that I.had made a mis
take, I was in the wrong box. And bow
ing good day to my friend, I started. H -
exclaimed, “You arc a Methodist mouse
then, well, go on, you’ll see wliat will come
of it. You will find more ‘black and tan
terriers’ there than you have ever seen
before in your life. Be nimble, now, or
they will scare you out of your wits with
their noise and their fire.”
1 hurried off, and reached down town
iu safety. I ascended to my old hole,
Things did look a little more as they
used to, here. All the openings still re
main, and the gentle shower still uprin
i !;!a those below. Ah, these gc .iple don’t |
: believe in change only ns old Time in his j
i onward march make.-, it. ills foot prints j
are hero. So heavily lias he pressed,
I that groat-holes are seen in his wake.
The crowd is gathering. It has been a i
| long time since 1 heard a town sermon,
llow the people have changed. Why 1
heard that you town folks were poor.
Bless me, if poor, if must be iu brain and
heart, and not iu purse, for such piles of
millinery both ‘ ore and aft,” requires
money to secure, and less brain and heart
to carry than the wise man had, who de
clared Unit all was vanity..
Toot, toot, what’s all that commotion
about - Somebody is iu agony. Never i
