WH r DO HOYS LEA YE TiIEFADM!
Tb < most embarrassing feature which
conr (iresents itself to the laboring ohms
of cil / ns, i« the general stampede made
by the robust and active young men of
oar country tol.be profusions. Iloyo
leave the rural shade* of the farm, where
nature’* gorgeous mantle feeds the eye
with untiring admiration, and her min
strel's musie greets the ear with in i
riahle rapture, for the silent cloister •
where a tedious eurrieulura of st udy may j
incompetently lit them for the title ol' a :
p -ttifogger or a quark.
Parents witness these depart,uresfrom
the toils of physical industry with pain
ful regret, ami marvel at such thought- j
less folly. They are either ignorant or j
forgetful of the influences which mould ;
the character and destiny of manhood in j
the asp ; ririg youth, a,s he obeys the pre
cepts of their stringent counsel. The
causes which alienate the taste for rural
employment from so many young men, |
are various ill different, localities; but m ;
our western country one cause, with
few exceptions, will suffice :
Farms are entirely too large, and il
properly cultivated, require more labor
than can generally be supplied. Such a
proportion, however, is put under plow
as the seasons for seeding usher in, help
or no help, profit, or no profit. Every
thing must go with a rush, slipshod or
half done. Hoys are hurried through j
panic of disorder, ex posed, overburdened
with labor, disgusted with farm manage
ment, and if luck terminates favorably
enough to return a tribute, they must
content themselves or not, if they choose,
with board and clothing. Or if envum
stanees and grudging liberality will al
low them a few dollars, how can it. he in
vested to the best advantage? Can they
purchase live stock and increase their
slender capital with alnindaome interest r
Oh no I they might incur an expense at
the parents’ crib, or make some interfer
ence with the master heard. There is
no investment for their money where it,
might yield a profit., and secure in them
an interest for their vocation. But inac
tive money is dead property, and is a
fact with which boys seem to he thor
ouchly acquainted, and it it, cannot be de
veloped insomeebannel of theirliome em
ployment, it must go out in some other,
and their interest, aspirations, and am
bition must go with it, just as interest
follows money in mature manhood. Ev
ery devotion is diverted from the farm,
until the aspirant resolves to be educated
for a profession. And thus is every bar
of justice crowded with a host of law
yers; the country is flooded with quacks;
and even the ministry is too often filled
with incompetent teachers, whose sub
sist! nee conn a either directly or-indircet ly
from the hard earned stores of the la
boring people. The officials of our coun
try, the frame-work of our system, is
built up front this strange medley ol ol
fiec-sei king professors, and its sacred
trusts committed to their care, it is not
in the charge of every demagogue that
the responsibilities of the State ami
Church are to be entrusted. They call
for ne ii of real genius, combined with the
most i>rvjicUmt education, to insure satety
and piumote the general welfare of the
people, aud it is not every one who limy
direct Ids aspirations to these high hon
ors, that may qualify himself w ith a com
petency to preserve them. Parents, it
you wish to shape the destiny of your
sops, give them an interest in that em
ployment where you wish to see their
manhood develop!'. Pou t discourage
agriculture, that channel of labor which
always leads the three great ami indis
pensable branches of national industry,
but renew its credit with noire worthy ap
preciations. liot your boys know that is
un occupation of great pleasure and
much profit, by allowing them to mate
something for themselves, aud partici
pating iu its rich enjoyments. With
such privileges the lienors of no oilu e or
pri fessiou will buy their interest. ; North
"Western (Indianapolis) Farmer.
C*ur Vinuoah. 1 take a quantity of
common Irish potatoes, and wash them
until they are thoroughly clean, and then
place them in a large Vessel and boil
them until done. I now drain off c ire
fill ly the water that I cooked tin m in, j
straining it if necessary, in order to re
move every particle of the potato. Then
i p it this potato water int o a jug or keg,
which 1 place near the stove, or in some
place where it will be kept warm, and'add
omv pound of sugar to about two and
one-half gallons of the water, some bop

’lYepa' ed in thisway, and lotting it stand
three or four \vvks, you will have most
excellent vinegar. Indeed, it is the only
vinegar that will preserve cucumbers out
fresh from ihe vines without the aid of
salt. Canada Fan, •r.
"That’s w here the boys fit for college,”
said the professor to Mrs. Partington, i
pointing t<’ asc hi ill lonise. "Did they:”
said the old lady, w itli animation. “Then
if they tit for the edit ge b< fore they went,
they didn’t fight afterward?” "Yes,”
said he. smiling and favoring the conceit-,
"but the fight was with the head, not
with tlie hands." “Hutted, did they ?”
