THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1873.
The Ltdies Festival.
We hope that every mint, woman ami
child 'll Quitman will attend this enter

at Hilliard’s Hall. The ladies have taken
every pains and adopted all moans in
their power to not only satiate the appe

good to eat that can be had. hut will, in
every way, endeavor to make them happy j
and have a p’ensaut time generally.
They do not propose to take much from
any one, as you will only have to pay for !
what you eat, which will be charged at
reasonable prices. Our readers all know
the object for which tlie festival is given:
to raise funds to enclose and beautify our
cemetery, and especially the graves of the
Confederate soldieru winsse remains were
confided to our care curing the late war.
Let. every one attend and contribute their
mite to the the prop;* gat ion of this labor
of love.

A Murderous Assault on a White
Homan.
On Wednesday night of last, week.
Miss Marv Patman, an excellent maiden
hide, who was 11 ving by herself, about two
miles from town, was assaulted and cru
elly beaten at her own house, by three
negro men. Their object, no doubt, was
robbery, as it was understood that Miss
Patman always had money about, her
house, which the negroes ransacked in ev-
I erv direction, after leaving her for dead
on the floor. Three parties, to wit:
i George Union, Robert Duncan and George
Washington, have been arrested as p-r
--| petrators of this crime, and ooufined in
jail s o await an examination before a com-
I mittal court, as soon as Miss Patman is
| sufficiently recovered to testify in the
case, which we hope will be in a day or
two. We trust, that the guilty parties,
whoever they may be, w ill be identified
and severely punished.
If a negro woman had been thus beat
en by white men, how the Radicals would
have howled about Ku-Klux outrages,
and liow the United States Go l m -f' -n
--ers, Marshals, Ae., would have ill! -; st. 0
themselves !
But it is only a white woman, brutally
beaten by negro men, so the United
States has nothing to do with it.

\Yt were not one of them, bijf it was
not until we had taken some half dozen

I that we were really not the one tackled
j by a lon-tailed, scrawny looking “jailer”
i country “dorg” that cathe leisurely down
Screven street on last Monday morning.
We were standing with our back to 11:■ -
street, talking to a gentleman, who -was
sitting just inside his store window, wln-u
the aforesaid country cuss and the well
known and popular bully among the town
canine, “Toby,” met right at our feet,
and without a growl or other usual "pre
j liminaries to dog fights, “cloned in,” ju4
j bet ween our legs, snapping, biting ail l
j making the wool fly at every eoni um-nee
of their ivory teetb, a finer display of
which we have never seen. Imagine our
relief when we found, after succeeding in
getting inside the door (not, however,
until our meagre (?) understanding baa
been several times knocked from under
us,) that Toby, whom we had not seen j
before, was that “yaller dorg’s” ani.ago-]
i nist, instead of us. We always did like* ■
j that little “town dog,” and shall forever
regard him hereafter with the kindest j
I feelings, and pat him on the back and
! holler “shake him,” whenever wo chance
i to be present at these frequent little un
■ pleasantnesses of his. But Toby needed
no patting this time, for about the third
“round” he filled his mouth with the
“yallerness” of the hair and hide of his
antagonist, who went, half doubled, to
wards home, at the rate of about forty
j knots an hour.

What is more soothing to the wea

down town, hollowing “mammy !” at ev

his tears, and stops long enough to grat
ify his curiosity, which being done, he
cuds as before, lie has a melodious
