Savannah Chamber of Commerce:
You are respectfully reqie steel to e.ill a
meeting of tln* Chamber ot Clointneree at
six o’clock this afternoon for the |mr]iose
of making such recommendations as would
tend to quiet the unrettsonahle distrust
which was exhibited to-day among cer
tain small depositors in savings institu
tions; also as might promote the move
ment of the crops and the general traus
aetion of business. Very respectfully,

Major Henry Bryan moved that a com
mittee of three he api ointed to prepare
business for the meeting.
Captain Ouilmartin offered as an
amendment the appointment of a com
mittee of five, which was accepted and
adopted, win'll the Chair appointed Ma
jor Bryan, Captain John W. Anderson,
Captain L. J. (luilmartin, Messrs. John
Nishet. and Id. VonSeihohl.
The Committee retired, and in a few
minutes returned with the following re
port, :
WitKUKAS, events entirely outside of
the State of Georgia have produced great
financial distress in the money centres of
this country, and occasioned serious eiu
barrassmeftt in this cit v ;
And whereas, till expression of .senti
ment. hy the members of this Chamber is
advisable; therefore he it
1. lienolved, That weeonsider the banks
of Savannah entit led to tho confidence oi
the people.
2. That a cordial and mutual good
feeling between the banks and tliV peo
ple of this eity is absolutely necessary
for carrying on business, and meeting en
gagements of all kinds. We therefore
urge that ail currency not needed ior im
mediate payments be left with the hanks
as the safest and most, convenient course
fertile owners of the same.
3. We urge that the hanks continue to
pursue an indulgent, course to the part.it s
whose obligations mature, and thus save
all classes from ruinous sacrifice.
4. We urge the railroad companies to
give all possible accommodations in the
matter of freights.
5. That a committee of five beappoint
ed by the Chair at once, to call on the
banks and railroads of the eity immedi
ately, and confer with them with regard
to the best means of relieving the pres
ent financial pressure, and to report- to
the Chamber of Commeree at an adjoin
ed mooting at ten o’eloek e. in.
In accordance with the last resolution
the chair appointed the following com
mittee: J.W. Lathrop, Esq., tieneral
Joseph Fipegan, John Nisbet, * ’iptain
Wm. Henry Woods and 8. H. Eckmnn.
The meeting then adjourned until ten
o’clock.
EVENING SESSION.
The Chamber of Commerce met at. ten
o’clock r. m., pursuant to the adjourn
(hetit, and was called to order by the
Chairman. Colonel A. M. 8!oan. Mr. J.
W. Lathrop, from the committee to wait
on the banks and railroads, reported that
they held a conference with the officers
of the hanks, and beg leave to report the
following as the result of their deliheia
■ tions.
Your committee recommend tin* adop
tion of the following resolution :
Retohted, That the banks and banking
houses of Savannah be recommended to
meet the demands of depositors by cer
tification of cheeks only, such ceitifira
lion to be used as the necessities of hold
ers may require until the temporary dif
ficulties ho removed, and until exchange
can lie regulated and currency he received
to remove the crops.
On motion the report was received and
adopted, and tho same committee toques- ,
ted to report buik to the banks and
bankers.
The committee then withdrew with a
certified eopv of the resolution, which
they submitted to the bank officers. Ma
jor Brvan offered the following resolu
tion which was unanimously adopted :

the committee of five during the next thir
ty days, and this committee shall hold
it self* prepared to r.-p. rt anything furth
er should circumstances require in their
judgment. The committee after a short
absence returned, when J. \\ . Lathrop,
chairman, stated that they had submitted
the action of the chamber to the bank
presidents and bauki rs, and that it met
with their favorable i onsuleratiou.
Tlie following resolution from the
bank presidents and bankers was then
read bv the oomnrttee, and, on motion
of Captain Colquitt was received :
• In compliance with the request of the
Chamber of Commerce of Savannah, and
in view of the tin precedents and panic now
prevailing in New York and affecting all
parts of the country, prostrating credit
and parahzing legitimate business; for
the purpose of protecting t he commercial
interest sos our community, and enabling
the banking itstitut : , Mi f this eity to
furnish facilities essential to forwarding
the cri ps of the countiv with safely to
all parties:
Mudrrd. That th- banks and tanking
lions, sos Savannah will only meet the
demands of depositors by certifi-at-on of
checks, to be used as the necessities of
holders may require, until the temporary
difficulties are removed, until exchange
can be negotiated and currency be receiv
ed to move the crops.
There being no further business before
the Chamber the meeting ad journed, sub
ject to tho call of the committee, in ac
cordance with the resolution of Major
Bryan.
