PZSOBLB’S FBIBND. Chaplains of Good Templar Lodges, and Pastors Favorable to the Pro gress of the Temperance Reform. “The People’s Friend” is the organ of the I. O. G. Templars, in the State of Georgia. We hope it may be widely circulated in South Carolina, Alabama and Miss issippi. While aiming as a family paper, to advance religion and good morals, it is especially devoted to the cause of temperance. The publishers of the paper, and friends of this good cause desire your hearty cooperation and support. You see everywhere the evils of the liquor traffic, the slime and deadly touch of “s(rpent.” You are eyewitnesses of the want and wretchedness entailed upon innocent and helpless children, wives and mothers by this traffic. You see its blighting effect upon the piety and growth of the churches. You can do much to stay its progress. We need a paper, earnest and true in its consecration to the one object of rescuing the fallen, and saving others from falling into the slavery and love of the drunkard’s appetite. Will you help us in supplying this need ? Write for the paper. Speak a word in its favor; get up clubs of subscrib ers. In doing this you will greatly aid in sustaining the paper and at the same time, help to carry comfort and gladness to many dust lat' homes and sorrowing hearts. L. 11. GWALTNEY. That paper is th ' “People’s Friend,” and to you as a woman, and an officer, high in tiic order, I appeal for your invaluable aid, in supporting tbe cause of tem n< rance, in supporting its organ, the I i’i. nd, by not onlj sul st rib ing for it yourselves, but by getting up chibs in your lodges. How the Mortal Enemy of the Tarant ula Captures his Victim. From the San Diego (Cal.) World.] The architectural ingenuity, or rather genius, of the tarantula is a fact long fa miliar to naturalists. This insect has an exceptional development of the instinct which instructs all creatures which are not protected by nature with a warmth-engen dering hairy hide to properly house them selves. The details of the tarantula’s dwel ling, down even to the matchless mechanism of the doors of its edifice, have excited the wonder of all interested in natural history. The most elaborate inventions in locks and hinges of vaunted human skill are distanced by this re- omous insect in the construction of the door which secures its privacy. But the road-runner, between which and the tarantula, a deadly enmity exists, is the master, as an incident which we are about to relate will show. Professor Agassiz, during his recent visit here exhibited a special desire to be sup plied with as many specimens as possible of the road-runner and of the tarantula killer. We are not advised as to whether he was supplied with live specimens of the road runner bird. It is about the size of a pheasant; its plumage is not unlike that of the pheasant family. It has longer legs and a slenderer neck and body than the pheasant. It tmsts fur locomotion almost altogether to its legs, and runs with a swift ness that would shame a hare or rabbit. It is susceptible of domestication, and in time learns to come at the call of those who have petted it. But it is a hopeless thing for a stranger to try to approach this lbw!. It is as sagacious as swift. We were put in possession of facts by Mr. Jose G. Estu dillo, which excited our wonder and admi ration. As we have said, there is enmity between the road-runner and the tarantula. The road-runner is as noiseless as rapid.— It lies in wait for the tarantula, and the ! moment it finds its enemy asleep it ap proaches noiselessly with a twig of the prickly cactus. Deftly and stealthily it goes on piling the prickly pr son around ; the devoted insect, until at last a rampart ■ of the desired bight is pilei up. It then selects a speciall} - jagged and heavy piece of cactus aTid drops it on the tarantula. — ■ The last, awakened by the shock, endeavors ’ to rise and make its exit. It is instantly impaled upon the thorns, and the triumph of the road-runner is complete. ■ Thistle and Ropewalk. • ‘‘Such a mite as I can do no good,” is the general impression of our boys and ; i girls when they are urged to do what they can for the good work. But smaller, humbler instruments than these our God has made use of to do great work in this world. A great army, many years ago, invaded Scotland. ’They crept on stealthily over the border, prepared to make a night attack on the Scottish forces. ’There lay the camp all silently sleeping in the starlight, never dreaming that danger was so near. The 1 Danes, to make their advance noiseless, I came forward barefooted. But as they 1 neared the sleeping Scots, one unlucky Dane • ! brought his broad foot down squarely on a j bristling thistle. A roar of pain was the ' consequence, which rang like a trumpet blast, through the sleeping camp. In a ' moment each soldier had grasped his weap on ami the Danes were thoroughly routed. The thistie was from that time adopted us the national emblem of Scotland. i By the harbor of New London there was once a long, old ropcwalk, with a row of i square window holes fronting the water. — ' In the time of the war a British Admiral i was cruising off that coast and bad a very | good chance to enter an 1 destroy the town. ! lie said that he should have done it “if it hadn't been for that formidable long fort, whose guns entirely command the harbor.” i He had been scared oil by the old rope- . walk. God has his uses for even the simplest and humblest of us. Our great business should be to find out what the Lord would have us to do, and then do it with all your , might, and mind, and strength.—A’. I". ’ Mercantile Journal. Just at the conclusion of a recent circus performance in a North Carolina town, the ■ clown stepped forward and informed the vast assembly that they had taken in about S6OO that day—more money, he ventured to say than any minister of the gospel in that county would receive for a year’s ser •viee. He then plainly told them that a . large portion of the audience were church members, who would plead poverty when , asked for money to support the gospel, and severely exposed their inconsistency. A few Sundays after he preached in the same I community, and made a strong appeal for missions, when a collection was taken up amounting to $438.
