I present the Press dispatch is, not so .
much on account of the news conta’n- '
icd in them, as of the fa-1 that it shows
a want of enterprise on the part of the
i business men of our citv. It is not
to bo supposed that an editor of a
1 daily paper can expend every dollar
he makes to got up nows for his read
ers, and to furnish merchants with the
1 markets Ac, when they refuse to sup-
I port his paper. What will be the re
; suit of a failure to sustain a daily pa
: per in Rome ? The building up and
: sustaining a daily paper in some other
; city? Is this doing justice to l.ome?
i If our merchants and business men
would, they could not only foster a
d lily paper, but sustain handsomely
' the other offices in the city. Some
i merchants say it does no good to ad
vertise. Suppose no paper was pub-
i lished in Rome, what would be its
condition ? How can they be published
unless sustained ?
Convention. — The annual conven-

P. Whitmore, Col. Thi s. IV. Alexander,
Col. C. AV. Sproull, Col. J. C. McDon

On motion of Col. Nathan Bass, the

iniuriously to the planting interests ot

S. B. Conder has been elected U. S.

we hope he is an improvement on the

The newspapers throughout the

Bard. Why not let the old reprobate
alon* 9 Is magnified into somO
tnmg of importance, and men arc
forced to road column after column of
uninteresting matter on the life and
doings of a man whom every body
despises. Keep his name out of the

The Alabama Legislature has at last
: gone to work, but not until after one
’of the dirtiest tricks on record. The
| contested scat of Mr. Martin, Dcmo
! crat, was reported to the Senate, the
Democrats reporting 57 majority for
Martii;, and the Radicals reporting in
favor of Miller. It seems that one
Democratic Senator and one Radical
Senator had leave of absence, and were
paired off, and in the event cither was
present, when the case come up in the
Senate, was not to vote. The Rid
was on hand and by voting made it a
tie, whereupon the President of the
Senate voted for Miller, which gives
the Radicals the Senate. If the Dem
ocrat had been pressnt the result would
have been different. Why a Demo
crat should have left his post until the
Senate was organized is a strange
thing to us. Why trust a man that
had already acted in bad frith?—

Bogus Georgia Bonds.—Col. Sneed’s
i rill to pay the bogus bonds issued by j
Bullock, ami declared void by the
< leorgia Legislature, is, in our judge
ment, to say the least of it, ill-timed.
If Georgia was liable for these bonds,
she oug'nt to p‘ty them. To say that
, those bond-holders as a general thing,
were innocent purchasers, is not the
bu t. Bullock and Treasurer Angier
were at war all the time about the
bonds, and Clews A Co. knew as well
when they sold the bonds, that they
, w< re not legally issued, as they do to
; day. So did every Banker and Stock
: Speculator North and in Europe.—
Georgia has received no benefit from
these bonds, and should not pay one
dollar of them - We hope the Ijpgis
i lature will .sustain the honor of the
State ami the rights of the people, by
promptly tabling the bill.— Bidletin.
Constitutional Convention. —Our
Atlanta exchanges give us infornation
that the bill before the General Assem
bly calling a Constitutional Conven
tion. is gaining friends daily in that
body. We have announced in favor
of the Convention, as we believe it es
sential that such a convention should
assemble. The main objection urged
against the call oi the Convention is
1 the cost. We know it will cost not
I less than a session of the Legislature,
. but Me propose to meet that expense
by adopting bi-annual instead of an
nual sessions, ami reducing the Senate
jto twenty-four members, and the
House to one hundred. The cost of
i the Convention, therefore, will be
amply met. Let the Convention be
ordered, and reforms made gencrallv.
Rural Beauties and uity Belles.
Country girls are not a whit b hind tlie’r
metropolitan sisters in the natural elements
of loveliness, but it must be conceded that
the city belles best understand the art of

half their attraction unless the complexion !
