Down in the dirt, down in the mud, Down in the darkness, down in his blood; Down in the depth of the damnable woe Down, where the drunkards ever must go, Driven by devils, deluged bj 7 drink — Down to the verge of ruin's dark brink. Muttering, mumbling, moaning with pain, Scorched by the sun, drenched by the ram; Scorned by the sobc , loathed by the pure; Laughed at, insulted, jeered by the boor; The jest of the school boy: Down liike the log, Down lies God's image, down with the bog. Bruised the white forehead, bloated the face; Bloodshot the eyes and closed in disgrace; Matted the loek, o’erhanging his brow, Sad sight for his mother to look on him now! The mother who bare him, fed from her breast, And singing sweetly sang him to rest —• Clasped her bright boj 7 in the arms of her love ; Fearing the future and looking above, Prayed for him then as a mother alone, With hope, love, and faith, beseiges the throne, Down in the street; 0 God! what a bed ! Better, far better, lie down with the dead Will nobody rescue, will nobody save? Must the mother herself arise from the grave? Dead though she be, dead these long years, Living her prayers remain, living her tears; Ay ! hvc in power, that heaven can move, And send to the rescue the Angel of Love.
