PEOPLE’S Rome, Ga., Saturday Feb. 15, 1873. Chaplains of Good Templar Lodges, and Pastors Favorable to the Pro gress of the Temperance Reform. “The People’s Friend” is the organ of the I. O. G. Templars, in the State of Georgia. We hope it may be wide ly cir culate in South Carolina, Alabama and Miss issippi. While aiming as a family paper, to advance religion and good morals, it is especially devoted to the cause of empcrance. The publishers of the paper, and friends of this good cause desire your hearty cooperation and support. You see everywhere the evils of the liquor traffic, the slime and deadly touch of “serpent.” You are eyewitnesses of the want and wretchedness entailed upon innocent and helpless children, wives and mothers by this traffic. You see its blighting effect upon the piety and growth of the churches. You can do much to stay its progress. We need a paper, earnest and true in its consecration to the one object of rescuing the fallen, and saving othc rs from falling into -he slavery and love of the drunkard's appetite. Will you help us in supplying this need ? Write for the paper. Speak a word in its favor; get up clubs of subscrib ers. Jn doing this you will qreatly aid in sustaining the paper ami. at the same time, help to carry comiort ami gladne s to many dost Ift: homes and sorr< >wbig I icarts. L. R. GWALTNEY. To the Worthy Vico Templars of the I. 0 G. T. • Rome, Ga., 3 an. 31, 1873. iSG/erx <»/’ /h'' Order: “J/rit am mha( women make (hrme, is an old adage, and a tine oik I How great then, is our responsibility! Let us make men sober, honest, earnest, truthful and manly, Let us first do right ourselves, then hold up the right to them, and bid them follow us. I hey will not refuse when shown the right by an earnest advocate, Hr suffer most bv the evils of intemperance, then let women rally to the cause and ext rt ourselves to diffuse the principles of tomperonce, and to shun its evils. This can best lie done through tin medium of a newspaper, devoted to the cause, a cause to which its editors are devoting time, talent and money with no sparing hand. That paper is the “Peopi.e’h Friend,” and to you as a woman, ami an officer, high in the order, 1 appeal for your invaluable aid. in supporting the cause of tem perance, in supporting its organ, the People's Friend, by not only subscrib ing for it yourselves, but by getting up chibs in your lodges. I should be glad to hear from you by letter, ami can remit your names and money to me can 1 the People's Friend, and I would also gladly publish any article of pub lic interest, from any sister. With the hope of hearing from every Vice Tem plar in the State, I am, in Faith, Hope ami Charity, Ex-Gov. Geary of Pennsylvania is dead. We hope the bill will past>. ——■ The Senate has passed a bill author- izing the Governor to purchase the Macon and Brunswick Railroad. King Amadeus, of Spain, has resigned the crown, and a Republican form of government has been declared by the Congress now in session. A civil war will be the result. The City Council of Atlanta has re fused, for the present, to submit the question of increasing the city sub scription to the Georgia Western Road to a vote. Congress has removed the disabili ties of the following gentlemen: Hon. J. W. 11. Underwood, Hon. L. J. Gar trell, Hon. Alfred Iverson, Gen. La- Fay e tie McLaws, Hon. M. J. Crawford, Col. B. C. Yancy and Maj. Goode Bryan. We are requested by several ladies living beyond Little Dry Creek to call the attention of the Commissioners of Roads and Revenues to the bad condi tion of the embankment on cither side of the bridge. Gentlemen look to the embankment complained of, as it is very dangerous. CJonstitut ional Convent ion. The House, by a vote of 93 to 2-1, tabled the bill calling a Constitutional ■ n. W( wer< in fa - ' r< f th< bill, and yet think it should have pass ed. It is true the State is in debt, and the. taxes heavy, but our opinion is, had the Convention been called, more than the expense of holding it would have been saved. Some of our State papers, in order to defeat the bill, had a good deal to say on the removal of the capital back to Milledgeville. That is an outside question, but if the people desire the capital i go back to Milk dgelille, 1< t it go back. It is a matter of very little importance to us, and it was from no motives of that kind that we favoie I a Convention. The Constitution needs ic-moddeling, and the sooner it is dole the bettor. Notiiing further will bo d me the present session, bat we hope at tin’ next that the importance of rhe Con vention will meet with more favor at the hands of the General Assembly. THE GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE. The Governor's message to be found in another column, is simply a state ment of the amount of money necessa ry to be raised to meet the liabilities of the State for the present year. The thing is easily done, and all this talk, and insinuations by paid men, decrying the credit of the State is simply ridic ulous. The amount necessary to be raised is one million eight hundred thousand dollars, v. hich amount will be reduct d by r< nts, taxes etc., at least half a million dollars. But suppose t is not reduced one dollar, the amount can be easily raised. Let bonds be issued in sums of one hundrad dollars and upward, then let an appeal be mad< to Georgians to save the credit of tl <• State, and our word for it, the amour/ will be raise I in one month.
