PEOPLEFS FRIEND [From (tie Nashville Union and American. 1 Oats and English Peas for Hogs. j In early times, the writer practiced sow- . ing oats and English peas early in the • spring, and covering with a light plow to raise feed for hogs. Not many Southern farmers have learnt the value of the gar den pea as a field crop for feeding stock, and for the improvement of land. Tne ' stem of our southern cow pea is too coarse, hard, and woody for hay. So.vn pretty ' thick, and cut before the peas are ripe, the ' plant makes hay of a passable quality.— , , The vine of the English pea is softer, moie , nutritious and digestible; while the pea ' itself is quite as good, and better for the table. Good Canada peas ought not to cost in Nashville over two dollars a bushel ; they sell in Canada at from sixty to eighty cents, and rarely have the little pea bug so com- : mon in southern raised garden peas. — j Where one grows English peas for hogs, the bug does little harm. On first-rate 1 land, this pea yields thirty to forty bu-hels to the acre and is worth a quarter more ' per bushel than corn to put fie*h on hogs or sheep. As a field crop. English peas do ! best sowed with oats, as the bats hold up j the vines and keep them from mildew and I rot, on the damp ground. Good fields of; clover, oats, and peas make meat with a Fujfli) outlay for labor, and without corn. After taking off a crop of fat hogs, th' 1 • pea fields and clover fields, in which they j have run, are in the right condition to plow • up and sow with wheat. Land that feed.- a good deal fatting rtock with all their ; droppings scattered over it, is not apt to t grow poor in the operation. The rich rc- ■' mains of the peas, clover, and oats wo’k up into a premium crop of wheat much better than big corn-stalks, where a corn field is ■ sown in wheat. Oats de best sown as early as the ground and weather will permit.— Our summers arc twenty degrees warmer than the same months in Scotland, where oats weigh forty pounds to the bushels, ; and have been used for making cakes, ' bread and porridge for thousands of years • Give the oat plant as cool weather as pos- I sible in our climate. By so doing, we give • it the full benefit of all spring rains, li , you plow in seed oats, it is wise to harrow the ground thoroughly, to obtain a perfect I tilth, unless this woik is done before sow ing the seed. Every farmer of forty acres should have a few bushels of fresh grass seed of his own raising to sow in places , where grass will pay better than any other ■ plant. The market reports in the Inion i and American. show that farmers bringing i corn in wagons to sell in Aushville get about a cent a pound for this grain ; while | for hay one gets a quarter more. Jt is ea- ! sier to raise three pounds of hay than one of coin ; and land is less apt to wash and be injured in meadow than in corn or oats. , We know first-class farmers who think it ! better to sell hay at five dollars a ton than | corn at fifty cents a bushel. But oats, peas, corn, grass, and hay, consumed on the farm, and all the manure ca. dully saved, is a different matter. The Price ofType. Messrs. Geo. P.
