JLCITIJ G C-TJI A BA TICK. THE DUCHY OF BRUNSWICK TO BE SWAL LOWED UP BY PRUSSIA. Tlie name of Brunswick, which for nearly one thousand years lias played so conspicuous apart in the history of Europe, is about to disappear from the lust of independent States, and.to be incorporated with Prussia, which has already swallowed up Nassau, Hesse, Holstein and other States whose ancient greatness and impor tance have departed. AV hat is known as the Duchy of Brunswick was form erly a powerful State. tinder Henry the Lion, it entered upon the terrible struggle which shook ■ the German Empire to its foundations j in the time of Fredrick the Second. 1 and which gave rise to the 'long and | bloody conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. Its princes have al ways borne conspicuous parts in the history of G rmany. After the sepa ration of Brunswick-Lun eburg from Brunswick-AVolfen buthel —the former of which, in 1723, became an appen dage of the British crown—the latter was ruled by Dukes noted for their military talents and their singular ec centricities. One of them was a favorite general of Fredrick the Great, and was many years afterward signally defeated by Napoleon at the buttle of Jena, where he lost his army, and after horrible sufferings, his life. His son was the heroic leader of the Geman rising against Napoleon in 1809, and fell gallently, six years afterward, at Quar tre-Bras. The next Duke Charles, was igno miniously driven from his principality in 1830, and has since led a roving life, being noted as a collector of cost ly diamonds. His brother, William I, the present Duke, is a childless old man, of misanthropic habits. He was born on April 25, 1806, being the second son of Duke Fredrick William, of Brunswick, and the Princess Maria, of Baden. On the flight of his brother in 1830, he undertook the government of the Duchy provisionally, and finally ascended the Ducal throne, on April 25,1831. , Duke William wished to bequeath the crown of Brunswick to the son of Ex-King George of Hanover, and af terward to the Duke of Saxe-Coburg, whose heir is Prince Arthur of England ko that Brunswick might remain in the bands of the Guelph family. The Prussian Government, however, refus ed to sanction this arrangement, and another was made by which the Duke consented to abdicate in the course of a few months, when 13runswick will be incorporated with Prussia. The Duchy of Brunswick, as at pres ent constituted, is situated in the northwestern part of Germany, and it formed the twelfth State of the Ger manic Confederation as it existed pre vious to the war of 1866, being requir ed to furnish a quote of 2,096 men for the federal army. Present, its ar my. on a war footing, consists of 4,857 infantry and cavalry, 12 guns, and 502 artillerymen. The area of the duchy is 2425 square miles, and its popula tion 304,401. The principal city and capital of the duchy is situated 35 miles southeast of Hanover. It has a population of 51,000 and contains many objects of historical in terest. COOCHS CATECHISM.
