REPUBLICANISM ABROAD. America has set a grand example to the world—the example of freedom, and the world is trying to follow it. •The “masses’’ of every monarchy in Europe are sighing for a government based upon die votes of the people, and any observant and thoughtful mind can discern the day not far dis tant, when free governments will be born in a day, as Spain was born, or underneath the red flag of battle, and baptized in the blood of Martyrs, Re publics will struggle into life, as did our own great country, in the day of Washington. When a shoe-maker /stands up in the Parliament of Eng land and tells the House of Lords that it is a “drudge upon the people,” thut the royal household is too “heavy an expense for so little profit;” we think we may safely predict the coming of a brighter day for the peasantry of Eritain. France has made many strug gles towards the right path, but the native frivolity of her people has so far, kept her back, but she will succeed I Spain is triumphing. Italy is looking up. Germany, Russia and Prussia are beginning to think, and we hope yet, to live to see the day when the grand “War of Armageddon” will not be, in its results, a dream of a poet or a prophecy, but a realization —a freeing of every nation on the earthl— Horne Bulletin. Whenever the Commercial gets “hard up” for a local Judge Hawkins suffers. Our esteemed friend Col. Eugene LeHardy is again welcomed to Rome after a protracted absence in New York. —» E. S. Edge, one of the finest boot ma kers in the south has an advertisement in this issue. Zeke has been kept sj busy by bis customers that he has not had time to tell you all about it, but if you want a nice fit and good utoek go and see Edge. The Commercial’s “local” has been in De Soto—wonder if be was taking notes for another illustrated edition of the flood, or trying to beat‘somebody outofasackof flour—Col. Daniel R. Mitchell will please rise and explain. Married.—Col. M. C. Stokes and Miss Mary Campbell, both late citi zens of Montgomery, Ala., were mar ried at< Calera, Ala., on the Bth in stant. Now Colonel we heartily wish you and your dear lady all the pleas ure and happiness each has so pleas antly anticipated in the future. We understand that the Judge of County court last week imposed a penalty of ten dollars on one of his jurors who was fifteen minutes late, but upon hearing his excuse which was failure of train from Selma to arrive at Rome on time he reduced the fine to five dollars. Well that do settle it? Jurors hereafter are cautioned not to travel by rail, as it is an unreliable mode of conveyance and should have long since been “ruled out.” W. T. McWilliams & Co., continue to do a large business in si lling Dry Goods Ac., at New York Wholesale prices to Merchants only. Merchants ran save time and money by buying their stocks in Rome. Leigh Hunt, in “The Wishing Cap Pa pers;” says: We often read at breakfast and tea; are sometimes observed in the streets —not out of o teutasion, but because we cannot leave oui friend at home; nay, if dining alone, we like to have the book open beside us, or will stick it up against the loaf, and devour salad and Sir Walter at the same time. We find no obstacles in the streets. We tlread the multitude as easy as a fish does the sea among his fellows, ora blind hat. avoids chairs or tables in room, Be keep a sort of eye, without seeing it, to the gut ter; and have the path down a hill before us without trying to keep it. We prefer however, green lane.-, or a lane with book i stails, stopping occasionally to compare notes with the blackbirds, and always stop ping to look at the books. In the latter c*se, wo make a display of the volume in hand, last the stall-man should confound it wit with one of his own- If we put it in our pocket, we fancy he will see it sticking out as we move off, and make hasty search befu’e we get out of s’ght. We fancy he will think it a Waller, ‘price 9d;’ or a de scription of the German Spa, or Mareus Antonios’ Meditations, or some modern writer (perhaps ourself)! “same as sells at five shillings)l” A lounge in summer against a bank of the new-mown has been too often describ ed to bedwelt on. In-doors, if the season be fine and warm, a sofa is the thing after a walk, with the balmy substitution of slippers for boots, and a new work to begin; or, say, the fifth chapter of a new novel, where you turned down a leaf, and were at ; a most interesting passage. The ivory knife to cut open tho leavesis also pleas ing. We cannot but think there is a kind of sensual pleasure in it. We must not dwell upon the pleasure of reading.in bed, turning first o ne elbow and then the other, and finally lying upon one’s back, and won dering we did not choose that happy pos ture at once. The custom is dangerous, and conscientiovs readers leave it off if they are not sure the candle will be put out- A book behind the pillow fur morning is an other thing, or even for the chance of read ing, if you wish it, though you never do. But we shall be reverting to particular tastes. As to winter time, we believe it will be allowed by all catholics perusers that an elbow chair, and a foot on each hob, is the most, luxurious enormity. The field for woman’s activites widens continually, and societies of all kinds arc organizing now morefrequently than ever, through which she can work effectually. One of the newest institutions for this purpose, formed in New Yofk City, is the “Bethany Institute for Woman’s Christain Work,” located at 69 Second Avenue. It is not denomination al, and its special aim is to afford woman the means of adapting themselves to some branch of missionary or benevolent work, whether it be as nurses among the sick, of Bible readers, city missionaries at home, or a blending of these several avo cations, to a greter or less extent in the service or Foreign Mission ary Boards. The Institute has rooms to accommodate twenty five student missionaries and a few vacancies exist for such as desire to enter it. The students last year did some good service in this city, and with a larger force, the influnce of the Institute would be sensibly felt in many directions. A parent writes to us that he is annoyed and pained by his son straying out nights, and asks us if we can present remedy . for this rapidly growing evil. There are several remedies, i The boy’s spine can be broken ' with an ax, or he can be nailed I to the floor with a red-hot rail, road spike, driven through his abdomen, but the most effectual way is to compel him to wear patched clothing.— Exchange. The startling drawback on nearly all me dicinal agents has ever been that in their process of purgation and purification they have also debilitated the system. To obvi ate this difficulty physiciins have lone sought for an agent that would PURGE, PURIFY & STRENGTHEN AT ONE AND THE SAME TIME. Their research has at last been rewardeu by a discovery which fully realizes th< fondest desires of the medical faculty, and which is justly regarded as the most iui portent trimph that Pharmacy has ever achieved. This important desideratum is DB. TUTT’S VEGETABLE LIVEB PILL. Which purify the blond and remove a 5 ’ corrupt humors and unhealthy accumu!. - tions from the body, and yet produce.' no weakness or lassitude whatever, but on the contrary tones the stomach, invigorates the body during the progress of the operation. They unite the heretofore irreconcilable qualities of a Strengthening Purgative and a Purifying Tonic. Dr- Tutt’s Pills are the most active and searchifig medicine in existence. r| l.ey at once attack the very root of diseases, and their action is so prompt that in an hour or two after they are taken the pa tient is aware of their good effects. They may be taken at any time without restraint of diet or occupation ; they produce neither nausea, griping or debility, and as a fam ily medicine they have no rival. Price 25c a box.
