Stokes’ friends are certain that he will be acquitted on his next trial. Out of 142 candidates for admission to West Point, 50 were rejected. The New York Court of appeals has given Stokes, who killed Fisk, a new trial. A public bath house is spoken of in Birmingham, Ala. We ere glad to notice the streets of our <i'y being so greatly improved, but still there is no bridge at the cor ner of Lumpkin and Court streets. Gentlemen why not? Sentenced.- We learn that the trial of (freer, in Putnam county, for killing his brother-in-law, Middlebrooks, re sulted in a verdict of manslaughter. He was sentenced to the penitentiary for twenty years. Normal Whitney, a prominent New Orleans merchant, has been arrested for setting tire to his own store. We are sorry to see Mr. Whitney in such a fix, for we know him well. We can not think him guilty. We have noticed in the Rome (' iiricr several communications from the able and ready pen of that talented writer,“Old Grizzley." since he left this city f r New York a few weeks since, which add greatly to the interest and reading appearance of the Courier. Now that he l as returned, we expect to rer. I a good many articles in the editorial line from his gifted pen. D:tv Goods at Wholesale. --W. T. McWilliams a Co. still continue to bring in new supplies of goods which they sell cheap for cash. Their busi ness i> already large and is stea.lily inci<. sing. Country merchants should n u lai! to call on them Kifore making their purchases, as they can get as go<>il bargains as can be had anywhere in the South. They can be found next d. or to J. A S. Poi.es A Co. IMPROVEMENTS. There are some improvements now . progressing in our city and a few more contemplated. Among those now progressing, is a very fine residence, going up near A. G. Bitner’s, on the western side of Howard street, owned , by a Mr. Roads. There is also being built, an addition | of some two or three rooms to the : Steam Boat office, at the foot of Broad l street. Mr. R. B. Wright is also building : an addition to his cottage on Alpine ' street, near Howard, which will great ' ly enhance the value of the place, be sides adding greatly to the beauty of the neighborhood. Among the most important of the i contemplated, is that we hear J. & S. 1 Bones & Co. intend to raise the brick ! buildings in rear of th* ir wholesale hardware establishment, another story. Black Berries. —Last Tuesday even ing, being tired of breathing city air, and not believing the cholera is yet in i this vicinity, we determined to go ber rying, in company with our friend; and right well did the sight repay us, for we never saw the like of black berry bushes, and every bush was loaded down with fruit. We had but reached our field of labor, for we went with the intent! of home, when the rain-gates of heaver. | opened, and a young flood was show -1 ered upon us. We hurried to the I shelter of some mulberry trees, but their dripping leaves only tended to wet us the sooner. After the fiercest had subsided, we gathered enough to show whore we had been, and began to plod home ward, and we think the next time we go berrying, we will consult the calen der to see whose day it is. for we learn that we intruded on St. John this i time. We won’t do so any more ! Railroad Accident.—On last Mon day evening as the 1:30 train on ti e Rome Railroad was approaching Ba.cs Ferry, about seven miles from R me, ; the fore truck of the baggage car be ’ came detached from the car and twist- I ed across the track, causing the train to break in two and throwing the car off the track, completely upsetting it. The passenger coach immediately be hind the baggage car was also thrown from the track. At the time of the accident; Mr. I. L. Todd, the conductor, was standing in the baggage car and when it turned I over, he was caught beneath the bag ' gage and got his left arm broken just above the elbow, and received several slight bruises. Mr. A. B. Wrenn and lady were aboard the train. Airs. Wren was slightly bruised on the face. Mr. Jacob Printup, of Thomasville, Ga., was also slightly hurt. The track ' was torn up for a distance of about : seventy-five yards. It affords us great pleasure to state that the Sanitary Committee, comp *s I of Dr. R. V. Mitchell, Maj. R. T. Har grove and Mr. T. ('. McGuire, is mak ing strenuous efforts to secure th*? health ami cleanliness of our citv. It will be the fault of the citizens if their premises are not thoroughly prepared for cholera or anything else that may turn up. We think these gentlemen deserve the thanks of the citizens cf Rome for the prompt and efficient manner in which tin y have dheham,y ’ their duty. It is also the dutv as well as the interest of the citiz ns to ai I these gentlemen in this matter for they are princiaplly concerned. Personal.—M e are pleased t- meet again on our streets Col. B. F. S . v -y, who lias jirnt returned from N\ a Y uk and Washington City, where he ha? been taking out patents fur Europe, i for the press invented by him s If and Dr. 11. I. Hampton. The Judge expressed him : self pleased to receive us, and took pride in showing us around the prem ises, which are under the control of his wife. He- conducted us through the gar den. which we deem nonpareil. It was indeed crowded with the largest and finest vegetables we have seen in the city; and, positively, there is not an inch lying useless in this whole ground, for where Mrs. Berry has not useful vegetables, she has ornamental flowers, consisting principally of gera niums. ; The next point of investigation was , the Orchard. Here the Judge was in his element, gathering fruits for us, at line tin pi ; and de- claiming their respective merits. In rhe orchard, the Judge has some very : fine early corn, also a fine crop of buck wheat, which is intended as a pasture I for bees, of which he has some hand some hives. But we contented our selves with viewing these ata distance, having been warned by the experience i of one of our employees a few weeks i previous. VJe were then again shown into the department of Mrs. Perry, consisting ;of poultry. And here we would rec tify a mistake made by us a few issues ago. We stated that this ladv had under her charge about 150 chickens: allo w us to say that we do not believe they will come within 250, of all sizes. I We deem ourselves somewhat a judge of poultry, and we confidently state i that we saw Light Brahmas in this i yard that we indeed think paragon. If you want to procure fine poultry and avoid, cholera, buy Brahmas and vegetables from Mrs. Perry. - Savannah. .Horning News. The employees of the above named papei have for some days past been on i “strike” or a “drunk” we don’t ; know which. But we do know that I the proprietor, Mr. Estill, is not a man to be trifled with. He, along with the editors have never failed to issue the paper regularly, and we think its ap pearance was as usual in style, quan tity of matter etc. We glory in his spunk. Since writing the above we have re ceived a letter from Mr. Estill, who informs us that he has thirteen coin i positors now at work and can get any . number that are independent of the 1 Union. We are proud of his Foreman, Mr. J. W. Taylor, a number of the Union, and as perfect a gentleman as the profession can boast of in flatly re fusing to join the strike on such a flimsy pretext as the one which caused the trouble. With such men as these the Typographical Union must not think to lead them as they think best. Perso: il. —Mr. A. B. Wrenn, Trav eling Av.ut : the Nashville, Chatta nooga A St. L uis Railroad, called to see us this morning. He and his excel lent wife are sp Hiding a few days in our mon.itarn city, breathing the pure, fresh tur and (.hiking our delicious 1 water, while at the same time he is working up the interests of his road. Wrenn is a thorough business fellow and we wi.-h him success in all things and happiness forever. ——— I JI T ie Stats- Fair, ofTcxas, was pretty well atteu led, but is not a success. Wj sincerely 11 *pe our Fair will be a complete success. Let even - one do their best, for we can assure you, that ; the Directors are doing their part. We intend to do ours. — .. - Our exchanges of South ami South western Georgia, bring reports of v< ry severe storms in portions of that sec tion, with considerable damage to the crops. It is easy to be nobody, and we will tell you how to do it. Go to the drink ing saloon and spend your leisure time. You need not drink much now, just a little beer, or some other drink. In the meantime play dominoes, chequers or something else to kill time so that you will be sure to never read any useful books. If you read let it be dime novels of the day. Thus go on keeping your stomach, full and your head empty, and yourself plying the i time killing games, and in a few years you’ll be the nobody, unless—as is« j quite likely—should turn out a drunk-’ ' ard or professional gambler, either of which is worse than nobody.
