From the Appeal.) LOTOS-LAND. BY LIDE MERRBVETHER. Here let us rest! in the cool shedows lying Beneath the whispering pine, Whose low sweet voices overhead are sing- ing, Whose wreathing arms entwine , With murmured sounds like loving, linger ing kisses On sleeping eyelids pressed, While the soft south wind woes us with caresses And whispers—“let us rest.’’ The foscst sleeps, its late glad voice of singing A dreaming echo seems, The babbling mountain stream with ryth mic singing Goes murmuring in soft dreams; Sweet slumber spreads her wings, with softest whispers Wooing us to her breast, And nature with closed eyelids chants her vespers And whispers—“let us rest.” The heron dips his beak where brightly gleaming The waves flow clear and cool, The water fowl with drooging crest is dreaming Beside the darkling pool Where the white pond lillies mid their dark leaves lying By crystal waves caressed, And tangled liver weeds are softly sigh ing Their whisper—“let us rest.” Long yellow linos through forest aisles are gleaming With shadows deep and wide In mute emorace, like night and noonday seeming To slumber side by side: On his dark breast her goldeu head re poses In silent rapture blest, His show arm her glowing form encloses And murmurs—“let us rest,” The summer sun on whitening fields is glowing In floods of amber light, The summer winds o’er bending vineyards blowing With purpling clusters bright: Through grassy Janes and gleaming hedger grows singing, In sweet contentment b’ost; The “Harvest Home” o’er hill and vale goes ring. And echos—“let us rest.” Ycs-tlet us rest—*ah! why should we rc m< mb ?r That summer suns will set, And with the hoar frost of the grey No vember The crumbling leaves be wet? Why note the storm cloud brooding ,moan ing, sailing Up from the darkling west? Why see the serpent through the blossoms trailing? Ah! leave us—-kt us rest. What boots it, that in shine and shadow blending. B’e've mingled good with sin? Our harvest time is past, our summer end ing, Our v intage gathered in: II hy mock us now, with visions false and fleeting, And shadows of unrest? Why set our hearts to lying legends beat i: g? Ah! leave us--let us rest. The past, however golden while 'twas ours, Is dark with vain desire, And ghostly, with the maddening, mock ing powers That vain beckoned higher, Like shows on which the summer’s sun is setting In clouds and shr.dows dressed, ’l’lmn with the Present -al! the Past for getting, I cave us - at. ! let us rest.
