ing them of their danger, but in
stead of stepping aside they ran along
the road, without inclining either to the
right or left. The train was moving at
the rate of twenty five miles an hour at
the time, and almost before the engi
neer was aware the distance between
him and the children had been dimin
islied to seventy five yards. Believing
tint the girls were endeavoring to reach
a fence a few yards in advance of them
before turning out of the way, and feel
ing well assured that the train would
overtake them if its speed were not
checked, lie reversed the engine and
whistled down the brakes.
The children, not seeming to realize
thoir imminent danger, were rather
tardy in their movements, but at length
reached the cattie-guard directly oppo
site the fence, and attempted to cross,
but, to the engineer’s horror both lost
their footing and fell astride the rails.—

notwithstanding every effort to save
them.
The train however was nearly check
ed, and came to a halt within ten feet
of where they were sitting. Beforo it
had entirely stopped, the engineer
leaped from nis post and snatched the
children, as it wore, from the jaws of
death. He was almost overcome by
the excitement of the occasion, and it
was some minutes before he could mus

Texas aad the Administration.
The Austin Intelligencer publishes the
offioial dispatches between Gov. Hous
ton and Secretary Floyd. Houston
writes, Feb. 14th, that he has used all
necessary caution and prudence, and
may now act upon facts before him,
and that unless prompt measure are
adopted by the Federal Government cir
cumstances will impel Texas to pursue a
course she desires to avoid. Texas can
not be invaded with impunity, and if
thrown upon her own resources she
msy not only resist, but adopt means to
prevent the recurrence of outrages, &e.
Floyd replies on the 28th of February
that immediate action will be taken; an
able officer will be dispatched to take
command of the department in Texas,
and strong reinforcements will be sent
as soon as the season allows.

Southern Medical Students at North,

“If all the Southern students at' our
Medical Colleges did not return borne
after the John Brown excitement, the

in the catalogues of Borne of our Uni

seventy-five or a hundred doctors, as
usual, thas institution only graduated
twenty doctors on this occasion. Of
this number there are but three from
Southern States—James Ponfield Wyer
of Georgia, Titus Hart of North Caroli

At this University there were also stu

Bait to Catch Gudgeons.—Douglas is
applauded by many southern Demo

knees” of their rebellion, for his late
speeoh in the Senate, in reply to Sew
ard. But the Washington correspon

not seem to appreciate so highly his
disinterested effort on that ocoasion.—
That correspondent soys that Douglas
thought the occasion a first rate one,
the lobby and galleries being orowded
with politicians, who had come to hear
Seward, to propitiate the South by a
little blarney; and, therefore, he hardly
waited for Seward to get through before
he was replying to him. Of the matter
and meaning of Douglas’ speech, the
correspondent comprehensively says:
“Between the territorial policies of the
two would-be Presidents, the choice it in
favor of Seward.
