Wiimak S. Baonr no Swwdlkr.—We
learn from the Maoon Telegraph that
William S. Bagby, who waa arrested In
Baltimore recently, charged with swin
dling the State Bank in Savannah, out
of $21,000, on forged drafts purporting'
to bo from Alabama Planters on their
footers in Mobile, is a worthy oitizen of
i Macon, and nephew of Thomas Bagby
of that place. He was apprehended on
the oath of identity of W. Cummings,
‘ Assistant Cashier of the State Bank, but
the Telegraph says that Bagby left Macon
at 10 o’clock, by .the Macon and Wes
tern R. R., for Atlanta, on the day of
. the frnud, nnd this fact can be proven
beyond controversy. So the swindler
r is still at large, and an innocent man
suffering in his stead.
Black Male Levying'
void Jack” the waiter at the Campbell
Hotel in Madison, Go., has gained for
himself an extensive notoriety for his
quick wit and eccentricities. No trav
eller who has stopped in Madison has
ever forgotten him, and no doubt Mr.
Fillmore has a lively recollection of the
speech Of welcome Old Jack made him,
on his arrival at the Modispn depot.—
Jack is a genius,as the following nnec-
doto, which we have never seen in print
•will prove.
A young doctor who had just received
his diploma had boarded at the Camp
bell Hotel, and his practice not being
very lucrative he moved a few miles in
to the country where it was not quite
so healthy. He made himself “square
with the world” like Wilkins Micawber
by giving bis note to the Landlord for
board. Old Jock whs otten sent by bis
master in a little Jersey wagon on for-
ageing expeditions into to the surroun
ding country to lay in supplies of chick
ens, turkeys, butler, eggs, Ac. Ac., for
table uso. On setting out on one
of theseroiinds his master handed him
. the youtigM. t)’? note and instructed
‘him ns he was going in .his vicinity to
cull and collect the money. Old Jack
“cracked his whip"' fqjly appreciating
his importance, and evidently Jeter-
mined to prove that this n-.ark of confi
dence in his honesty and- business ca
pacity Was not misplaced. *■
The astonishment of .“mine host”
can oniy be imagined, upon Jack’s re
turn to see nis wagon loaded down with
phials, bottl s, surgical instruments,
medical books Ac.
“Why Jack,” he exclaimed, “where
on earth did you get all that stuff,
and what are you going £o do with
id”
“Well you see marster,” replied he
chuckling at his cleverness, “when I
called at the Doctor’s shop, hewarn’t at

The Reception of the Mexican Gulf
News in Wnahington. ... ..
Washington, March .20.—The public
mind Jn this city is very much excited
on the subject of the recent naval en
gagement in the Gull Thb pppuliflr
verdict here decidedly sustains the ao-
tion of the American Naval Command
ers in that affair. Although but little is
said on the suly ect in Congress, there is,
very evidently; a deep feeling pervad
ing all parties, It is understood, also,
that the Administration approves the
action of the Naval Commanders, so far
as the statements of the affair are con
firmed. There will probably bo an ox-
oiting discussion when the calls of to
day on the Executive for information
on the subject; shall bo responded to,
. Jke Navy Department is not idle; two
vessels of war have been ordered to-day
to fit out immediately in order . to pro
ceed to the Mexican ooast,

New Orleans,- March 21.—The mails
from the City of Mexico,“with dates to
the 11th inst., have been received.
Captain Jarvis, of the sloop of war
Savannah, (and the senior United States
officer at Vera Crus) at first proposed
that if Juarez would place the steam
ships Indianola and Wave at 1ub dispo
sal, he would intercept Gen. Marin’s
expedition. He subsequently deter
mined to pursue a strictly neutral
course, unless he was forced to do Other
wise.
An intercepted letter to Qen. Mira-
mon states that the Capitol of Mexico
was seriously threatened by the Liberals,
and asks assistance.
Two Spanish men of war, at Bacrift-
cios, were seen, during soveral nights
recently, taking war materials ashore
for Gen. Miramon.
Two flags of truce to French Bri
tish Consuls, from Gen. Miramon, were
refused entrance into Vera Cruz.
