It was about eleven o’clock at night, and
having occasion to refer to some books
in a distant part of the library, he left
his desk, took his candle, and, as he I
had done before, pursued his course I
the winding passages towards!
red spot. But before reaching I
it, while in an alcove in the southwest I
,jurt of the older portion of the build-1

respectably dressed incitixcn’sclothes, I
surveying a shelf of books. The Doc-1

secreted himself for the purpose of ab-1

the library; after stepping back behind I

moved cautiously forward, to catch a]
{limpet of the individual’a face, when I
o his surprise he recognised in the sup* I

whose name we forbear giving) .who I
iod lived in the immediate vicinity of I
the library, and who had died aome six I
weeks agol It should be borne ini
mind that this deceased person was a I
mere casual acquaintance of Dr. Ctogs-I

his death Dr. Cogswell had not thought |
of him. I
But the apparition was in the pres-1
enoe of a man not easily scared. Tbe|
librarian, so far teom fainting or shriek-1
ing, ss might reasonably be expected, [
calmly addressed the ghoet:
“Dr. — said he, ‘you seldom, if

Wto dO you trouble us now when I
Perhaps the* {host did not like the]
sound of the human voice; any way, it
gave no answer, but disappeared. I
The next day Dr. .Cogswell thought |
over the matter, attributed it to some!
optical delusion, and in the evening I
proceeded with his work' as usual.— |
Again he wished to refer to some books,
ana again visited the south-western
alcove. There again, as large as I fe, was
the ghost, very calmly end placidly sur
veying^ the shelves. Dr. Cogswell again I

Again the ghost vanished, and the
undaunted librarian pursued his task
without interruption. The next day he
examined the shelves before which the
apparition bad been seen standing, and!
S a singular coincidence found that!
ey were filled with books devoted tol
demonology, witchcraft, magic, spirit-1

rare tomes, several centuries old, writ-]
ten in La'in, illustrated with quaint]
diagrams, and redolent of mysticism;
While on the next shelves are their
younger brethren, the neat spruce I
works of modern spiritualists, of Brit-
