Mr Dear Sir:-— * *' * I believe
that at this day the Northern Democra
cy are sounder and more reliable on the
slavery question than they have ever
bi'eh. The Kansas Bill lms driven off
all the compromisers, and left those
that remain ju>, alternative, but a full
vindication of oiu-. whole rights. . 1 be
lieve; therefore, they will prefer a bold,
ultra Southerner to a renegade.
In a short conversation with Douglas
yesterday, he said to me that what he most
feared was that timid southern men would' fall
back.'
I shall , be .content with Buchanan,
and .will sustain Pierce, if nominated.
It. i»-also my interest to be non-com-
inittal; but when 1 write to an old
l like yourself,.I will be .frank,—
reference is for Douglas. . fie is
fearless,and self-reliant. Were he
elected he would bo President, llo
would not come into office with a body
guard of old fogies and politicians ready
to seize upon ‘njl'the offices. He is true
to the sbutii. lie demand* not only the
lion. . To,him wo are indebted; .for the
Kansas bill, which now . presents : the
points of .contact, lie is the true rep
resentative 1 of this princlple, and opposes
the abominable principles of Squatter Sov
ereignty.

offered the following resolutions:
Whereas, The Church at Romo has
about nineteen .feqfein length, seven-
teeii ih breadtifi*and; tour dr five in
depth. Bro.. L., 011 entering, found the
roof and sides incruited witli stalactites,
and a gehetol-sheet of stalagmite rising
irregularly into bosses, lay beneath his
feet.—This sheet of stalagmite broken
through, a rich brown, mud was found
itt’’ about nine inches iir thickiieks, loamy
kja for the depth of two inciies, while the
interior was ; rather : Sandy. In this
loani, at ail depths, from the surface
down to tho rock, iir the midst of the
stalagmitic - upper crust, were found
bones of . the following animals carni
vora—hyena, bear, fox, and .' weasel';
pachydermotu—rhinoceros and horse ;
ruminantia—ox and stag ; rodentia—rab
bit, water rat, and mbuse; and 'bifds—
raven, lark and snipe. The bones and
teeth of the hyena were plentiful, while
the bones of the remainder were com
paratively scarce. There were three
different species of bear, the largest of
which was Cuvier’s “ursus spelucus.”—
Bro. L., who is, although a plain, blunt
farmer, one of the best versed' men in
science in the State, explains this natu
ral phenomenon very satisfactorily.—
Ho says that lie thinks it a den of some
ravenous animal; tliut carcasses of large
animals were drifted into it. I will not
enter into the details of the explana
tion, as Bro. L., intends to write an ur-
tioly. himself on this great curiosity, for
which-this communication is designed
simply to prepare the public car.—
These wonders of nature will, I Under

versity museum.
