A Japanese Belle.
A recent East India traveller -thus
sketches her:
1 saw a young girl standing, fan in
hand, at an open door, reading. She,
was simply clad in a loose crape half
petticoat, half dressing-gown sort o<
areas, reaching far down as the ankles,
and bound by a sash of yellow SoT
around tho waist. Her feet, which wet
small and beautifully formed, rested o:
the common high straw sandals of th
country. Over this dress, which lef
tho bosom partly uncovered, she wore a'
light cream colored open Jacket, of'
muslin texture, with wide sleeves ex
tended a little belOw tho elbow; her
soft black hnir was beautifully drawn
back from off the forehead, and' hound
in a peculiar cluster at the back of the
head,-' where it was held by two gold pins
one of. great length, and with a scorpion
like device attached to it, and which
Chinese; her features animated and ex-1
pressHe, and her teeth white, and as I
finely formed as her entire figure. But I
the latter I saw that she was unmarried!
—the invariable Japanese custom being!
that oh the marriage of every female,
the teeth are died black, and in some
cases the eyebrows shaven off.

Huntsman’s Ball in Paris.
Tho Paris correspondent of the
ton Traveller sends the following ac-|
count of a Huntsman’s Boll lately given
in that city: •'* ; r U
I may instance one of -the few balls
lately given here, for Its oddity. It was
given by the’Duke de la Moskowa,
tirand Huntsman of the Court. He in
vited only one hundred and fifty guests.
It was literally a huntsman’s boll. The
vestibule, staircase and ante chamber
were adorned with hunting trophies,
guns, rifles, hunting poignarde, and
other similar objects. The orchestra
played hunting songs for the guests to
dance by, and the waltzes (for there is
no hunting song by which one can
waltz) were interrupted by various horn
accompaniments familiar to sportsmen.
Concealed singers accompanied the or
chestra by barking, baying, snapping
and moaning in tho moat approved
canine style, whippers-in crooked their
whips, and the game-keepers exploded
percussion caps. . T ., f.
At a quarter of twelve tile huntsmen,
ybippers-in and game-keepers on the
staircase blew the tally Jid.and at twelve
o’clook they blew the quarry. Wheh
the quarry was sounded, the ball room
was invaded by a great quantify of
gome of all s<nU ll wnich appeared to
attack tho Grand Huntsman. These
game costumes were excellently gotten
up. Tho birds—there were partridges,
pheasants, plovers, heath-cocks—were
all feathered; the wolves, foxes, hares,
stags, deer, were all in the skins of the
beasts, with a mask and falsehood of
pasteboard faithfully imitating the ap
pearance of these animals. Prince de
Metternich, the Austrian ’ Ambassador
(!), wits the heath-cock; he was dressed
and crowed to perfection. It seems
this was a surprise even to the master of
the house, and it was reckoned in
celleht taste and very amusing.
A New Fashiox.—A gentleman who
has been passing a week or two at one
of the large hotels in New York, says
there seem to be * mania among the
lady-boarders to come to the breakfast
and tea-table with a book in their hands
but they are never seen to open it.—
Our friend was told by a gentleman that
he had seen a lady bring the same book
to tho tuble for two weeks; and, an op
portunity one day offering, his curiosity
was excited to see what book could be
of so much interest; on opening the
volume, to his surprise, he found thaf
not one of the leaves had leencutl” Wo
