The Subterranean Wonders of the
Western Alleghanian Slope.
Tho Kanawha '‘Republican thus dis
courses on this theme
The subterranean wonders of the great
Western Alleghenian slope contmue,
from time to tame, to bo developed to
the astonishment of the intelligent
dwellers upon the surface. There oan
be no doubt that Nature has had for
centuries and still has, her workshops,
or great laboratories, here and there un
derneath the rirfhee^df the. great- re
gion o f country,.‘embracing a large part
of Western Pcnnsylvanii, Trans-Alle-
-hanian Virginia, and parts of Ohio and
Kentucky , in which she employs all her
—jost potent ohenrical-agencies and af
finities. The extent of her manufac
tory of gasdowp in the" lower regions,
near Holden, on tho Kanawha river
maybe estimated by tjhefact that when
in the spring of'1844, in boring a salt
Veil, at the depth of 1>000 feeft the au
gur strhok the reservoir of gas, the
stream of gas that rose to the' upper
surface was so powerful as to shoot the
whole boring: apparatus, Consisting of
one thousand feet of poles and a sinker
weighing five hundred pounds, into the
air, like an arrow. .The stream of gas is.
ing up with unabated force, day
night, for sixteen years. When
‘onroad is completed, this gas may
imed to some account. PipeB may
id along the road, so os to - light
y night the whole road East 'to
mond and west to Cincinnati, and
then enough to spare to light up three
cities.
That in the some region there is an
extensive subterranean manufactory of
oil admits nc doubt. The oil t^ukes. its
appearance on the water of our river,
and in places comes up to the surfaoe of
the earth.' Barrels of it have been
Thus nature invites the
search for the great reservoir that is
doubtless way down below.
The Secret of Exoland’s Greatness.
It was a noble and beautiful answer of
our Queen, says the British Workman,
that she gave to an African prince, who
sent an embassitge, with costly presents,
and asked her in return to tell hint the
secret of England’s greatness and Eng
land’s glory; and our beloved Queen
sent him not the number of her fleet,
nor the number of her armies, not the
details of her inexhaustihle wealth.—
She did not, like Hezekiah, in an evil
hour, show the embassador her dia
mond^ and her rich ornaments, but
handing him a beautifully bound copy
of the Bible, she said, “Tell the Prince

“The friends of Mr. Douglas are in
Washington in large numbers, and they
crow loudly over the letter of Mr. Dim-
