Tammany delegation clung to one can

soul. Though forced to appear attach

fact, the most zealous friend of the
aspiring candidate. Just as the South

counteract that movement a large sum
had to bo used, and none but Mi. Fow

Wo can only explain the conduct of
Mr. Fowler, a man of judgment, a man
of the world, but a man of generosity,
and the lenient manner in which his
crime is regarded by men of undoubted
honor, by the supposition that Mr.

The Great Eastern.—Tho Great Eas-
ern is announced to sail on the 9th of
June for New York, and there is no
doubt whatever that she will sail punc
tually on the day fixed. Tho number
of passengers to be taken out is limited
to 300 first class. A large number of
berths have already been'taken; and
tile limited number fixed by the board
will, it is expected be taken in tho
curse of a few days, The time which
the vessel will remain at New York will
depend upon the amount of attraction
for visitors, from which the company
hope to derive a large revenue. In ad
dition to this, negotiations are at this
moment going on with one of the de
partments of the Government in respect
to the chartering of the ship for tho
conveyance nnd laying of tho subma

Return op the Jews to Palestine.—
There are few current subjects of more
absorbing interest ordeeper significance
than tho events now almost daily trans
piring which point to the repossession
by the Jews of their own land. The
tide of progress, after a laps eof centu
ries, may bo said to have fairly turned
in that direction, nnd the prayer long.
oiFered by that chosen but now scatter
ed people, that “Judah may be saved
and Israel dwell securely, nnd that the
Redeemer may come to Zion,” is un
doubtedly hastening to fulfilment. The
Sultan of Turkey is encouraging Jewish
emigration to Palestine, ana is offering
to sell them as much land os they
choose to buy, and it is said has even
expiessed his willingness to dispose of
the Mosque ofOmar tot hem, which, it will
be recollected, stands upon the very
site of tho Jewish Temple on Mount
Moriah. This mosque is one of the
