Slack Rope Performance by a Rat.
Rats are somewhat proverbial for their
natural instinot, whioh often manifests
itself in expedients resorted to by them
for self-preservation. We were witness
of an instance of this a day or two since.
Dick, our family cat, had osught a rat,
and in its struggles for liberty and dear
life the latter animal escaped up a post
oh which was stretched a clothes line.—

distended orbs, his enemy the cat. The
latter, meanwhile, had lost no time in
pursuing his prey, and having reached
the top of the post, attempted to imitate
his ratship in his slaok-rope performan
ces. But finding tliiqimpossible, he de
scended to the ground, and after paus
ing for a moment, watching his prey,he
apparently became bewildered at the
strange turn matters had taken, and re
turned to watch the hole from whence
the rat had emerged. This was the rat’s
opportunity, and seizing upon it he de
scended to the ground and made good
his escape.—Newport (It. I.) News, June

Affair of Honor.—Several of the
“differences of opinion” arising at Bal
timore have been settled in Washing
ton City. Mr. Bennipg, one of the se
ceding Georgia delegates, has made the
amende honorable to Colonel Gaulden, the
Douglas delegate from that State, who
made tlieslave trade speech in that Con
vention. It was supposed that their
troubles, caused by a heated debate
would have ended in a duel. .
Large Contribution.—The Treasurer
I of the Committee for the relief of the

KEMPTON’S
TR1C0PHER0US.
K EMPTON 8 TRICOPIIEllOUS is a
Medicated Compound for preserving,
restoring and beautifying the Hair, for re
moving dandruff, and for preventing the
hair from failing out. It is compounded on
puroly scientific principles, nnd is entirely
ef a vegetable character. It strengthens the
roots of the hair by stimulating the scalp,
cleanses tho head, and-as an agreeable acces
sory to the toilet is unsurpassed. In the
words of a poet, who has proved its excellent
and varied qualities, it may now bo truly
said—
Behold a double charm, whose potent power,
Adds a now grace to beauty's choicest dower,
Bids her rich curls a silken lustre win,
Heals the torn flesh, and cools tho burning
skin.
The loosened hair, touched by its balm takes
root,
And from the sculp new, living fibres shoot;
And look at woman—lo 1 each flower tress,
Shines as it waves,"though late ’twas lustre
less.
Smiling, sho marks tho change—her fears
are flown,
The crowning gift of nature Is her own;
At morn and eve tho liquid is applied,
Tho rich mass lengthens, and grows thick
beside,
She makes no seoret of the causa, and thus
Spreads the just fame ef Kcmpton’s Trico-
pherous.
