Challenge Accepted.,
I The Enquirer, (Columbus Ga.,) of the
110 th,'states:
We learn that the Columbus Guards,
t h h ~ Ugh J h ^S fl fu ta l?> ?* aI J.Semmes,
nave accepted a challenge, thrown out
to tho world Uy-the Zouave Cadets of
Chicago, llUtiolr, to drill against each
other according W the tactics of Scott,
Hardy and Cooper.
The SouaVes may be a well drilled
Company, but should they achieve a
victory over our gallant guards, it will
be the fault of the privates and not of
the officers. As a Captain, Captain Sem-
mes hw but few equals,, if any; and
Lieutenants Ellis and Hodges both serv
ed in the Mexican War, and are most
excellent officers, and also Lieut’s Clem
ons and Everett. , .
Success to the Guards I We are not
apprised of further particulars.
Oregon Election.—Late advices from
(Oregon state that Mr. Logan, Democrat,
lhas been elected to Congress from Ore-
[gon by ISO majority.
The Legislature stands thus:—Demo-
I crats favoring Senator Lane and Alston
[ Democrats 21; fusion Republicans 13.
I This is according to a Democratic source.
I It is believed that it will result in the
I elcotion of Mr. Baker, the. Republican,
land an anti-Lecomptoto man to the Sen-
late.
WaRUkE Preparation in England.—
We learn from the last English papers
that the Royal Commisiion on the de
fences of the country,- in their report to
Parliament, recommended certain work
of coast fortification,'involving an out-
lav of £11,850,000 within four years
which will probably have-to be raised
by loan. A rumor, apparently based on
authority.that it was the intention of
government to procure the money on
the seourity of annuities terminable in
26 years, was in circulation and produc
ed an unfavorable effect, it being con
sidered that the income tax would bear
prejudicially on that species of securi
ty. The general feeling appears to be
in favor hf raising the money on Con
sols, in prbferenao either to annuities,
Exchequer^ Bills, or any other form of
security. '
•9* The Florence correspondent of
the Providence Journal says that some
surprising rovelations are being made
in an investigation going on under the
direction of the Commandant Bellott,
of the French garrison. A plot has been
discovered, in which several of the Ro
man prelates iUre said to be implicated,
with no less ah object than to cause the
assassination 'of ine Em|>eror Napolbon
and General Garibaldi. The head of the
former, according to the testimony, was
valued «s high as 500,000 franc*, and
that of the latter at 100,000 francs. Two
individuals, with the names of Franchi
and Mariani, were the ones to put the
design into .execution. The examina
tion is still going on.
