The Veteran Editor is Dead.
Washington, July 22.—Mr. Joseph
Gales, the senior partner of the propri
etors of the National Intelligencer,
died in this city last night, in the 75th
year of his age. He was, during two-
thirds of his life, connected with .that
establishment; but for several years
past he has been infirm of body but of
sound mind, and continued his daily
visits to his office until about a week
post. He was held in the highest es
teem by all classes, and his death occa
sions universal sorrow.

Artillery Company,
A meeting of the members of the
Artillery Company was held in the City
Hall on Tuesday night, and preliminary
business preparatory to organisation
was transacted. The Constitution of
the Chatham Artillery was read and
referred to a committee, who are to
make such alterations as circumstances
may render necessary, and report on
next Tuesday night. The Committees
on Officers and Arms will also report at
the same time, when a gaptnin and,
perhaps, other officers will be elected.
Thirty-two names have been enrolled
os members of this corps, and the num
ber is constantly increasing. The en
terprise is in the hands of men who
will not let it fail, and we expeofc to see
it fill the expectations of its most san
guine friends. The Cavalry and Light
Guards must keep their “eyes right,’’
for a formidable rival is entering the
field.
The next meeting of the Artillery
Company will be on next Tuesday
night and ail the members are request
ed to be present, os business of impor
tance will then be attended to.
Stum pi no * Candidates.—The Rich
mond Whig says:
Strange and melancholy the specta
cle indeed now presented to the Amer
ican people. For, it Ik a noticeable fact
that all the candidates for the Presiden
cy and Vioe Presidency, except _ Bell
nnd Evorett, who are quietly, dignified-
lv and honestly attending to their busi
ngs at home, are at this moment trav
elling over the country, and harangu
ing the people in their own behalf!—

way to Kentucky—Douglas speechified
himself on to New York, where he still
is—Johnson isora'-ihg to the people of

Mfcnm the faces of the sovereigns of North
Carolina. .
Nobody Bound.—Ex-President Pierce
has written a letter to B. F. Hallet in
Which he alludes to the two Democratic
Conventions, and says: “There has
been, in foot, no nomination made in
conformity with the established and
recognised usages of that organisation,
and hence sound and faithful men will
find nothing in the proceedings so far
as the nominees are concerned, to bind
their party fealty.” Mr. Pierce further
oavs that a union upon Breckinridge
:anr<l Lane “cannot even be hoped for.’
If Democracy be thus run aground,
- let the patriotic men of the party quit

next step”—vote for Bell and Everett.

Storm of Wind and Rain.—The

at about’ 90 in the shade. It was de

of exercise uncomfortable, and to be
averted if possiblo. In tho afternoon
we were.visited by a splendid shower,
which laid the unquiet spirit, the dust,
and sensibly'cooled the atmosphere.—
People breather deeper and freer—the
relief from the oppressive heat was like
giving one a new lease of life. The

which made rather lively times in the

were blown down, (we hear of injuries

and the air filled wi.li dust. But what
a world of good the shower must do!
