MITCHELL A SON, fob28triwtf Agents, 13 Broadway N. Y. CAN Libxbty.—In the last volume ft Randall**‘‘Life of Jefferson,” the foi lowing anecdote is given: While the question of Independence was before Congress, it had its meetings near a livery stable. Its members wore short breeches and silk stockings, and handkerchief in hand, they were dili gently employed- in Jashing the flies From their legs. So very vexatious was this annoyance and to so great an im- natience did it arouse the suffarere, that it hastened, if it did not aid,It in induc ing them to promptly affix their signa tures to the great document which gave birth to an empire Republic. The anecdote I had -from Mr. Jeffer son, at Montieello, who seemed to en joy it very much, as well as to give credit to the influence of the flies, lie told it to mo with much glee, and seamed to retain a vivid recoiieotiou of the severity of an atttack from which the only relief was signing the paper and flying from the scene.
