Fire.
1
On Monday night, about 2 o’clock,
our citizens were aroused from their
slumbers by the alarm of fire, which was
found to proceed from the wooden buil
ding nearly opposite the Episcopal
Church, the property of Mrs. L. J. Peck,
of Augusta, and occupied by Mr. R. Y.
Moore, and Mr. B. G. Salvage, the
Foreman of the Courier office. The fire
ik supposed to have originated from ash
es deposited in a box in the basement
room oi the house, and had progressed
so far when discovered, that the Occu
pants wore just ablo to escape withou*
saving anything but their lives from the
flames. Their loss is about $200 each.
The building was insured for about $800.
The fire next communicated with the
building owned and occupied by Mr. R.
L. Duncan^ and burnt it to the ground
but tlie night being very calm, and no
other houses within reach of the flames,
the conflagration proceeded no further'
Mr. Duncan saved his movables. Loss
$609; insurance $300.
Lecture by Rev.C. W. Howard.
We have received from the ^author a

nevolence as illustrated in the early
History of Georgia.” It was first deliv 1
ered before the young Men’s Christian
Association of Augusta, next in this
place and afterwards in every city and
town of importance in the State. We
had the pleasure of hearing it here, and
the impression then made upon our
mind has not since passed away, and
the delight of that hour will bo repro
duced by a perusal of the address in its
present form.
It is neatly and creditably printed at
the “Steam Power press of the Chron

request and for the benefit of the As

Dairyman’s Daughter.—One of the
pleasantest churchyards I know of is
in the Isle of Wight, and many years
ago I was sauntering among ita grasses,
when I saw a lady in deep mourning,

The former was reading a book to the
latter, who was looking with tearful
eyes into her mother’s faoe. When
they turned away trora the spot I saw
they had-been looking on the tomb of
tho Dairyman’s Daughter, whose simple
epitaph was engraved on the tomb
stone. The lady was the Dutchess of
Kent, and the little girl was the Prin-

dominions the sun never sets. Strik
ing was the contrastin the condition of
