Erratum.—On last Saturday in oom-
menting on Col. Fouohe’s speech on
. the 23d, the types made us speak of
the lows of the Kansas Legislature pro
hibiting slavery, as “constitutional re-
^ striotions.” Of course we meant just
the reverse.
The Accident to Miss Slack.—The
Chronicled; Sentinel announces that relia
ble information has been received by
the friends of Miss Martha Slack, at
Augusta, which strengthens the hope
of her ultimate recovery from the dis
tressing accident she recently met with
at Cave Spring.
Decrease in Slave Property in Floyd
County.—By an examination of the tax
returns for 1859 and ’CO it will be ob
served that there is a decrease in the
Rvalue of slaves this year from the lost,
of $099,023, or according to their aver*
age value ($651,70,) equivalent to one
thousand and seventy-two slaves. How is
this vast discrepancy to be accounted
for ? Is it a mistake in. the returns ? or
in the figures ? Or have that many ne
groes, or a smaller number equal to
them in value,’ been taken out of the
county? Can somebody answer?
Negro Shot.—On Sunday night one
of the guards detailed to maintain
order in the city, seeing a couple of in
dividuals in close conversation, ap
proached them, who when tlioy discov-
ered him took to their heels. He pur-
• sued them and ordered them several
times to stop, which they refused to do,
nml observing they were fast gaining on
him, he fired. One of them, a negro
man, belonging to J. C. Barnett, Esq.,
of Madison, Ga., and hired by Mr. G.
N. Wright of this place, was badly hurt,
about eighteen buck-shot having taken
effect upon his porson.
The other individual was run out of
| town for about a milo but escaped.—
’ Tho negro who was shot gives as his
reason for not stopping, that n couple of
| men had a little whilo before endeavored
to carry him by force out of town*
threatening to shoot him if he resisted.
WIe managed to get away from them
"Tmd thought they were after him again
when hailed by the guard. He says
the person he was with was a negro
whom ho had never seen before.

’ I’ Milancholv Accidbnt.—On Saturday
Jtcrnoon James Scoggins, of this coun -
y, went home intoxicated, and wishing
o discharge a loaded pistol,fired it from
he house into the yard. The ballen-
; ered the body of his little daughter
1 about five years of ^ge, whom he did
lot see when he shot, and in about half
m h ur she died. The verdict of the
i kroner’s inquest was in accordance
with the foregoing facts. It is a solemn
' warning against intemperance, and
^Carelessness in the use of fire arms.
A Strangx Bedfellow.—Mr. & Mrs.
IcCann, living on MoGavook street,
lashville, retired to bed on Sunday
ght, and were there visited by a streak
' Ijghtnmg. Their little girl was also
i the bod. The lady states that to all
pearanoe the lightning entered by the
ilmney flue, and was attracted to the
d by an iron rod used for the mus-
■quito bar. The entire foot of the bed
was shattered into a thousand pieces,
and yet, despite their intimacy with the
dangerous moment, the occupants of
the bed were not injured. The gentle
man, however, says that it woke him up,
a fact we deem highly probable.—Aug,
Chron.
Slave Increase.—The new census will
probably show the number of slaves, in
the United States, to be over 4,000,000.
This is on the computation that the
rate of increase will be not less than it
was from 1840 to 1850. The addition
to the numbers within that period was
716,756, the rate of increase nearly 29
per cent; more precisely28.80 per cent.
At this rate the increase, which is net
likely to be less, computations have
been made of the future numbrrs of
tho slave population, within a few years.
Tho figures are, indeed, startling, from
their magnitude. It is very certain,
that within the first quarter of the
next century, it will beat least fifty
millions.
The Tartar Emigration.-TIio gener
al migration to Turkey of thej Tartars,
the only agricultural population of the
Crimea, has left that province in a de
plorable state. The vineyards, which is
the chief source of wealth of the moun
tainous portion of the country, ore go
ing to l-uin; and wages of a)i sorts have
been increased to such an extent as to
render production unprofitable, and
the necessities of life exceedingly dear,
Flounces to nE “all tiie Rage”
Again.—Tho latest Paris fashions toll
us that dresses are again universally
trimmed with flounces, as better suited
than anything else to the light material
used ut this season. These, however,
roach only half-way up tho skirt, and
are often ornamented with ruches of
narrow ribbon, or a 'small votan of silk
cut out and laid at the edge of each
flounce. Tho sleeves are worn open,
and tho body is frequently made low,
with a pelerine or fichu over it.
BSyTlie following from the Louis
ville Democrat is not bad:
“We liavo nominated for our State
electors the Hon. John C. Mason and
Governor Archie Dixon. He had bet
ter go further South. Ho must not
cross ‘Mason and Dixon’s line.’"
