Rome, Aug. 31, ’59.tf.
After the troops had been employed
for n few hours in throwing up th® em
bankment across the Delta, it became
extremely difficult to procure tlie re
quisite supply or earth. The soil there
is so thin that, at the debth of threefeet,
water is reached, and, consequently,
earth had to be pared off ovet a great
surface. This operation being both
slow and laltorious, a French engineer
sted the employment of cotton
bales, a ship load of which happened
to be lying near. The idea was at once
adopted, and a large number of bales
were placed in position. Six days af
ter the British cunnonaded the Amnri-
can lines with great fury, when it was
found that the cotton bales were worse
than useless. Not only did the balls of
the enemy knock the bales out Of
rntn part, but set some of them on fire,
which caused volumes of smoke to roll
back upon the American army. As
soon as the enemy had retired, Gen.
Jackson ordered every bale to be re
moved, which was promptly done; to
th/tt on the day oj the t/rca> and final straggle,
Jan. 8M, there unit no cotton on the American
lines. The British made a similar mis
take in employing hogsheads of sugar
to strengthen their works. They soon
found that a cannon ball goes through
a hogshead of sugar witu scarcely-Bny
diminution of ita force.
\ KaY“What Louisiana is going to do,
may bo best inferred from the follow
ing comment on the Convention elec
tion, takon from the Picayune, one of
strongest and most unyielding co-oper
ation papers in the whole .South :
“The vote in this city prefigures the
result in iho State. Tho chief hope of
the favorers of united Southern action
as opposed to immediate disunion; was
in carrying the city for the co-op«ra-
tionists. The canvass of votes, which
shows 20 immediate secessionists to 5
co-opeintionists—a majority of 15 in tho
Convention, from this parish—settles
the point that Louisiana will be with
the seceding States as fast us the forms
of making the enactment by ordinance
can be got through at,
on the 23d. Tho developmentsftrtnrlul
us, in every direction, are sufficient in
dications, however, that khfs wait only a
question of time. TU« sectiouhl major
ity in Congress and the triumphant
Republicans 1 ' aFTho Northern States,
liavo so willed it, that there is no Union
party in kilo Southern States.
■' <5>rn’_ vs, Cotto.v.—But a short three
•weeks since the black republican journ
nls were indulging in gleeful remarks
about tho decline in Southern cotton,
and figuring up the probable aggregate
of loss on the entire crop. Now, how
ever, there is a different showing, cot
ton is going up, while corn is going
down. Indeed, so near valueless has
it become, that it is used for fuel, os we
learn from one of these vei ylrepublican
papers, from one of which, the St Louis
Democrat of the 1st. we make the follow
ing extract;
It is a singular fact, that en certain
portions of tha Illinois praries, corn is
being used as fuel, in lieu of coal, and
is found to an excelleet substitute. In
the districts referred to, corn is 12} ets.
per bushel, and coal from 15 to 17 cts.-
Nol only is tho difference in price in
favor of oorn, but a bushel of it gives
more heat than a bushel of coal.
Tim I.vvtvcnii.Es op CoiiBov Lire.—
Wliat a glorious troip might be formed
of those men who have won their lau
rels in the campaign of lifo; fighting
not against sword nnd bfiyotrat, musket
and cannon, lance and eabre; but
against hardship and circinstances;
natural defects and the ridicule or op
position of their fellow men. Nor has
the fight been against n visible or tangi
ble toe alone; these men have had
themselves to conquer, their ignorance
or indolence; their natural leaning to
evil; the bad habits of early days, or
even their poverty and the Ioivuess of
their social station.

Levels or the Atlantic and Pacific
Ocean.—The popular notion whioh ' tad
so long prevailed that the Atlantic
Ocean was many leet higher than the
Pacific at the Isthmus of Panama, has
been formally exploded. Col. Totten
has decided, after a series of careful ti
dal observations, taken at Panama and
Aspinwall Bay, and connected by accu
rate levels along the line of railway,
that the main height of the two oceans
is exactly the same ; although, owing
to the difference in the rise of tide of
both places, there are, of eourse, times
when one of the oceaus is higher than
the other ; but their mean level, that is
to say, their height at half tide, is now
proved to be precisely the same.—Mer
chant’s Magazine.

Gee, for attempt to decoy slaves; Hen

Iturglury. It is supposed that McGee is
