A Fast Ridi After the Bireac Bill,
—One of tbs incidents connected with
the Senatorial vote u; on the Freed

terest exhibited by Senator Reverdy
Johnson, in responding to a telegram
apprising him that the critical vote of
that day was imminent. Tho honora
ble gentleman was sojourning in Balti-1
ticnore ut tho time of bis notification,
but immediately put himself en route
fnr the Capital on a locomotive and
tender.- whioh performed tho distanoo
of forty miles in forty-one minutes.—
Not one of the Radical phelunx could
have guessed when Mr. Johnson en
tered the Senate Chamber, With about
thirty minutes to spare, that he had
taken soexhiliurating a ride for the ex
press purpose of contributing his very
Important mite toward their defeat.

Sion of a Back Down.—Sumner’s
last speech was quite moderate in its
tone, and the correspondent of the Bos
ton -Traveller writes that he will vote
for the admission of Tennessee at an
early day.
Planting in Mississippi.—One o 8 the
best prospects, says the Jackson Miss-
isBippian, which we notice for a good
cotton orop next year, ih Mississippi, is
the immense number of laborers, both
white and black, which are being land
ed at this and other places adjacent.—
It is estimated, by gentlemen who pro
fessed to kfiow, that over one thousand
white laborers bare boon Introduced
into ihe counties of Coahoma, Tunica,
and Bolivar.
Toilet Receipts for liudicf;
Having well cleansed the hair, a lib
eral use of pomade, or oil, will tend to
strengthen it. One of the best ungu
ents for the hair that is made is termed
Pliilocome. the name of which is a com-
round of Greek nnd Latin, signifying a
riend to the hair;
White wax, 6 oz,
Almond oil, 2 lbs,
Oil bergamot, J oz,
Oil lavender. £ oz.
Oil cloves, 1 drachm, t.
Melt the wax in the oil of almonds
by a water bath at as low a temperature
as possible; stir the mixture as it oools,
first adding the essential oils. Do not
pour it out into jars until it is nearly
cool enough to set, and let the jars it is
to bo poured in to be slightly Warmed.
Raise Facit.—The South is constant
ly devoting more attention to fruit rais
ing. Wo hope this spirit of improves
ment Will continuo to increase until we
shall he entirely independent of impor
tations front abroad. In no deport
ment ot horticulture has more interest
been manifested tbnn in grape grow
ing. A little attention and expense
would enable almost every family toi
