Griffin Furnishes a Burglary.
AiUntnCoDltitutioa.
Griffin, Ga., August 18.—An amus
ing case of burglary occurred here Sat
urday night last, the rascal who did the
work being one Jake Shelton, or “One-
eyed Jake,” as he is familiarly known.
1 allude to it as an amusing case of
burglary, and it certainly merits such
a title. Reeves & Co., druggists here,
had been suspecting thieves from their
back entrance, and in order to frustrate
any attempts in that direction had ar
ranged ajar of sulphuric acid over the
window, attached thereto a cord, whioh
was connected with the window. Rais
ing this window would invert the jar,
emptying the contents all over whoever
made entrance. Jake concluded he
didn’t hare enough worldly goods of
his own, so he decided’ to appropriate a
few drugs and whatever else he could
rake in. Climbing up to the window
he made his entrance by boring through,
but as ill luck would have it for him, he
! struck the cord and down came the
whole jar of acid on his woolly head,
! completely burning olf his clothes. The
fool was so frightened he couldn’t get
I away, and his noise attracted an officer,
} who took him in tow. Jake says as fast
| aa he would grab in one place to keep
bis clothes on, the acid would eat
through another, nnd by the time he
I got to the locknp he was about clothes-
leas, pieco by pieoe having dropped off
on the way. Ho was removed from the
guard house to the jail yesterday, and
bad on nothing but a blanket. ITe is
not much injured by the burns. I guess
the State will furnish him with a suit
of stripes in a few weeks.
Just as the afternoon passenger or

Whereas, Many false reports have
been promulgated through the news pa-
pers, not only in this State, but through
out the West, as to the occurrence which
i oo took place here on the 25th of July last,
and feeling and knowing that wrong has
thereby been done to the people of this
county, now, we, tho citizens of Yazoo
City, as an act of justice to ourselves,
as well as to the people of this county,
feel it our duty to give a true statement
of the affair, as well as the causes which
led to it.
The people who assembled here on
that day were no lawless and infuriated
mob, but men of respectability, intelli
gence and property, of honest vocations,
identified with the prosperity and ma
terial interests of this county, as well
as the preservation of the peace and
good order of its society. A race-issue
had been inaugurated by H. M. Dixon,
a man of violent and desperate charac
ter, whoso career here has been marked
by strife and turbulence; who has keen
reckless of huroaD life and of the law.
This man waB the originator and lead
er of this race issue, or so-called Inde
pendent party, assuming first the name
of Independent Democrats, and was a
candidate for sheriff of the county.
The people felt that if this course on
the part of Dixon continued it would
sooner or later culminate in actual and
bloody conflict. Our best citizens look
ed with gloomy forebodings to the re
currence of the scences of anarchy,
strife and bloodshed which marked the
race contest of 1875. They contem
plated with horror tho saturnalia of
lawlessness, crime and rule which would
follow the inauguration of such a man
and his satellites into the government
of the county. To avert these calami
ties, and from an instinct of self-protec
tion, and to save the reputation and
character of the county, to avoid more
strife, many citizens did assemble here
on the 25th of July. From their num
ber they sent four unarmed men to
Dixon, who was at his house, to request
him to leave the county. This he re
fused to do. Within less than a half
hour after their return to the assembly
on Main street, some friends of Dixon
came from him, saying that he would
pledge himself to withdraw from the
canvass. Three of Dixon’s friends, with
one citizen opposed to him, then re
united to Dixon’s house, distant a quar
ter of a mile, obtained a card of with
drawal and were returning to the crowd
on Maino street, when they were met by
three gentlemen who were sent by tjie
same citizens who sent the first four un
armed men, and who insisted that Dix
on should, in addition, pledge himself
not to raiso the race issue again, which
he, Dixon, agreed to.
We deny and charge the statement as
wholly false that any armed men opposed
to Dixon entered or wero near his prem
ises on that day. No armed men were
in view of his house during tho whole
day. It is not true, as stated in the
sensational r. ports of this "affair,” that
the Mayor, or any one else, with shot
gun, arrested tho mob from crossing his
threshold, because there was no mob at
his house. Neither did the assembled
citizens hold parley with him.
They simply, through a committee,
demanded that he should leave the
county, which he refused to do, and on
the heels of this refusal he authorizes
his friends to say, for reasons set forth
in his card, that he would withdraw. It
is not because Dixon was an Indepen
dent that he was asked to withdraw,
but because of the strife between races
that he was engendering; because ho
was appealing to the prejudices of the
negro and arraying them in solid body
against the whites, and because, his
course would have led, ns we believe,
to the spilling of innocent blood, both
of whites and blacks.
We declare ourselves opposed to mob
law and violence. But the Almighty
lias given to us ihe right of self-protec
tion and self-defense, and tho people
liavo this right, and whenever the oc
casion arises it should be exercised by
tho people in the same manner as by
individuals. That wo may not be mis
understood, we now declare that we are
now and have ever been in favor of
equal rights to all men before the law
that the colored man is secure in tho
enjoyment of all his rights, and that the
step taken by the white people was in
the interest of white aud black alike,
and that it had no political significance,
as the question was one of self-prefer'
vntion; the Democracy of this county
being at all times willing to submit to
the ballot-box all political issues fairly
presented.
The Reason Why.
Washington Post.
Frequent complaint is made in the
Northern Republican papers, that there
are no Republican journals published
in a number of Southern States. This
is attributed to bulldozing. Perhaps
simple statement of facts may remove
this false impreesion, and show why
Radidal papers do not flourish like a
green bay tree in that portion of the
Union whero the negro and the carpet
bagger, backed by the Federal bayonet,
formerly held away.
In the spring of 1876, just before the
inauguration of the last Presidential
campaign^ a Republican, now residing
ip this city, and a journalist of ability
and experience, was temporarily so
journing in a Southern State. The
county in which ho was thus staying was
Republican. All its offices were filled
by Republicans, with the exception of
one, for which a Democrat was appoint
ed because the Radical who had been
elected could not give the requisite bond.
This Republican journalist one day
called on a matter' of 'offioial business
upon the county clerk, a recent arrival
from Boston. After- his business bad
been transacted, he remarked to tho
clerk and deputy clerk that he thought
a weekly Republican paper in that
county would be a good thing for the
party locally and the causa generally,
and hinted that he would establish such
journal there if any reasonable encour
agement were offered.
Thereupon the county clerk and his
deputy leaned back inliheir arm-chairs
and burst into loud laughter. This con
tinued for some moments, much to the
chargin of the visitor. Finally the wa« no othor than Cdticoiiy
county clerk managed to check his risi- 81n06 thst timB 1 hMre °
bles, and turning to the visiting jour
nalist, said: "I beg your pardon, but do
you know that in this Republican
stronghold, this county that gives so
strong majority for the Republican
ticket, there are but thirteen white Re
publicans, and that but very few of the
slacks who constitute our reliable ma
jority can read? What would support
a newspaper for our party in such a
field?” A little further conversation
revealed the fact, that all of the thir
teen whites who managed the county
affairs, and held most of the offices,
were recently citizens of Northern
States.
This incident, whioh we know to he
just as wo state, shows why Republi
can newspapers do not live in the South.

Profitable Stock Investments.
Before Messrs. Lawrence & Co., the
New York bankers, inaugurated the
combination system of operating in
stocks, it was often vory difficult for in
experienced operators, or evon. old
stagers, to deal profitably by their single
handed ventures. Now the field is open
to every one for successful operations,
and capital in any amounts, from 810
to $20,000, can be used with equal pro-
30{tionate profit. Instead of distract-
ng efforts among -many customers, the
orders of thousands aro concentrated
into one vast pool and co-operated for
the benefit of all, dividing profits pro
rata every month. A prominent citi
zen of San Francisco made 81,264.86
from an investment of $300 last month.
Other customers aro doing better still.
$25 pays $125 during the month, $200
returns $1,200, or 6 per cent on the
stock, and so on as the market moves.
New circular contains two unerring
rules for success, and full instructions
for any one to operate profitably. All
the advantages of unlimited capital and
careful manipulation are secured by
the combination method. Stocks and
