A Surpiiso Supper.
We were pleasantly surprised just on
leaving our office last Friday night by
receiving from the hand of a surprising
ly dusky Bervant, an invitation to attend
a “surprise supper” tendered by Capt.
Stansbury, of the Rome Hotel, to the
patter and official members of the
Methodist church in this city, who were
holding the last business meeting of the
conference year at the parlor of the ho
tel. We went, ot coutse, and to the
surprise of the parties above mentioned,
Capt. S. ushered us right into the midst
of the meeting. Well, ws were instruct
ed and highly entertained by the sensi
ble views of Rev. Geu. Evans, the pas
tor, on the subject of church building,
and listening to his remarks and noting
the enthusiasm of his hearers we could
in fancy see a church such as the Meth
odists of Rome ought to have growing
into an aotuality. We heard several
speak of “hundreds’' they, would give
for a lot iu a more suitable part of the
city, etc., etc.
Gen. Evans seemed so much inter
ested in his subject that Capt. Stansbury
had to ask him to suspend long enough
to go to the dining room, and it was
surprising to see how quickly he sus
pended. We were served to oysters as
we wished, with all the necessary con
diments and vehicles, fruits, nuts and
raisins, with “Rome Hotel celery,” etc.,
etc., etc., Capt. S. not forgetting the
necessary adjunct of every well-served
meal, a cup of fragrant coffee.
After supper, Col. J. I. Wright hand
somely expressed the^sontimont of the
party by tendering the thanks of aUtoour
host for the rich repast. Col. W. called
for a “few remarks’’ from “tho under
signed," but “the undersigned” was not
through eating, and never makes "af
ter-dinner” speeches till dinner is over.
General Evans seems to have won
the affectionate regard and esteem of
our people generally, and particularly
of the members of his church, and it
will be pleasant news to Rome to hear
that he has been returned to this church.
