Teething in children is now and then a sea son attended with restlessness and pain ; and was one, before surgeons were in the habit of using the gum lancet, of anxiety and danger ; but it is not so with horses; they never have any fetish , rr itation created in the system, though they mayjiaye some tenderness of the gums and palateaB^though some few , in con- quence of thiflB^rness cud their food, or retuse to eat anyWwhat is soft and unirritat- iug. in such a case, if anything requires to be one, we ought to lance the gum, not the palate; hut 1 do not remember to have had to do this but once ; and. this happened in the case of a horse, and in his fifth year, who had fed sospar- Jhgly for the last fortnight, and so rapidly de clined m condition in consequence of it, that his owner, a veterinary surgeon, was under no light apprehensions about his life. He had himself repeatedly examined the horse’s mouth without having discovered any defect or dis- ease ; but another veterinary surgeon, to whom he had shown the animal was of the opinion that the averseness or inability manifested in masticating food, and the consequent cuddihg ot most of that taken in, arose from a preterna tural bluntness of the face of the grinders; these teeth were therefore filed, but no benefit resulted. It was after this that I saw the horse, and must confess that I was jnst as much at a loss in my first examination, to offer anything satisfactory on the case, as many others then present, for his teeth and mouth appeared to us all to be ported and healthy. As [ was rumin ating on the apparently extraordinary nature of the case, it struck me that I had not seen the tusks. 1 immediately betook myself to a re-ex amination, and then discovered two little tu mors, red and hard, in the situations of the pos terior tusks, which, when pressed, appeared to give the animal insufferable pain. J instantly took a pocket-knife and made crucial incisions through these prominences down to the teeth from which time the horse recovered his appe tite, and was restored. Our own definition of lampas is, that in the young subject there is re laxation of the mocus membrane of the mouth, accompanied by turgescence and pain. In the aged subject, the membrane is corrugated, thick ened, and is scarcely, if ever, attended with LEGAL ADVERTISEMENTS. Washington Sheriff Sale. TylTILL be sold before the. Editors ;-The unprecedented scar city of provisions, for man and beast, through put our section of country, renders every eco nomical suggestion useful, even though it eman ate from one of limited experience. With this , inducement, I offer a few thoughts for tillers of For many years I have pursued the habit of soakrtig corn 24 to 48 hours in water, a little salt thrown m, twice a week ; the casks used to 'be filled with water as fast as absorbed. Work ing horses will consume the cob entirely with as miich benefit as an equal weight of fodder, which uf course may be fed more sparingly — Another consideration important to those°loca- ted near to whiskey dealers ; the corn is un merchantable, consequently your servants are Jess templed to become thieves and drunkards heat “in-, the milk, ’ (when scarcity de mands it,) may be cut and cured like hay, with advantage ; shbuld be sprinkled with dry salt (a peck to the ton,) when housed. Thus man aged,in^an emergency, is a tolerable substitute ~r Corn and fodder.
