PORTASLESAW MILLS.
Messrs. Editors.—In compliance with
Vour request, in reply to Mr. O.T. Keeler
of Columbus, Miss., 1 send you a brief sketch
ot imormation ;n regard to Portable Saw
Aiills. l ..iave had one in operation over
1 mon lds, and am well pleased with its
performance.
I consider Messrs. Georoe Page & Co.’s
the best in use. They may be found iu
Baltimore, Md., where there is a large estab
lishment for the purpose of manufacturing
Portable Circular Saw Mills, Grist Mills,
Corn and Cob Crushers, Threshers, Corn
Sheller% &c.
Ibe Saw Mill with a 48 inch circular saw,
with tue carriage and wavs long enough to
.saw lumber 22 feet long/and all other nee
essarv fixtures, belts, &c., will cost at the
.shop in Baltimore, about §400.
It’it is desired to be propelled by horses
{which can be done, and is often the ease)
it will require trom 6 to 8 horses, and an ad
xlitior.a! expense of $150 or $200 to that
mentioned above, to purchase the “horse
power: in other words, the gearing to at
tach the horses to; to drive the mill.
But it steam be the motive power, (which
is far preferable to horses) the horse power
will no f be wanted, but a steam engine in its
stead, which I would recommend to be made
by Messrs. IIarland <fe Hollingsworth.
of AV ilmington, L)el. I was in a number of
engine snops, botn North and South, and ac
cording to my judgment they make decided
ly t ae best engine, and for less monev than
any house I was in. Their means and fa
cilities enable them to do their customers
justice.
A 12 horse power engine is large enough
It will cost at the shop about $1,100, with
out a “governor,” which is of no service to
a-saw mill whatever.
These nulls will cut from 1,000 to 4,000
feet ot lumber per day, according to atten
tion and power applied.
Three hands at the mill will saw 1.500
to 2,000 feet per day with great ease, if the
saw is properly trained and fixed.
I pieter the Circular Saw to the common
upright saw, for many reasons which I could
give, but it would make this comnmnica
tion too prolix. By writing to Page & Co ,
of Baltimoie, a pamphlet can be procured,
which will give a great deal of information
about their cost and performance. But by
experience it will be found that the amount
of lumber cut by t hem, as stated in the
pamphlet, is too much for us to expect here
in the South, where the pine is so much
harc.ed than at the North. I have sawed
400 f -et ot weather-boarding in one hour,
but most of our pines are too hard to be cut
that rapid. \ ou will have to let the saw
feed itself slower than that, ordinarily.
^ If Mr. Keeler desires, I could, I think,
gi'e him some useful information in regard
to the arrangement, proportions, construc
tion, &c., of an engine for that purpose, if
he intends to purchase one, unless he has
some practical experience with steam* en
gines. *
i fear I Lave been too tedious for your

and there is much which I could say yet.
which would lie of no minor importance to
finy gentleman who is about to engage in
the enterprize. lours, most respectful

Hebrew Plaster is becoming popular in this
section. Tnere is a lady in this county who
says she would not be without this Plaster lor
five hundred dollars a year. She was afflicted
for some time witti au enlargement of the spleen
which gave her ‘great deal of pain. The
swelling and pain had extended up nearly to
tlie armpit, and occasionally she could scarce
ly breathe. She was confined lor a considera
ble time, during winch she was attended by
some of our best physicians, but they gave her
no relief- She procured a box of the Hebrew

and now now she keeps a supply of it ou hand
