.The Temperance Cause
That a majority of the people of Georgia
are in favor of temperance principles, ab
stractly speaking, wc have no doubt.-—
Many of the leading counties, have through
their Grand Juries even denounced the
liquor traffic, and earnestly invited Legis
lation upon the subject. And yet in every
effort heretofore made before the people, a
perfect Waterloo defeat has been the result,
from tho Flournoy petition down to the
Atlanta Convention resolutions. Is it true
that the people of Louisiana, Mississippi,
Texas and Tennessee not to mention Maine
and other Northern States are in advance
invited to dine, where all the good things
that the Philadelphia market could afford
was spread out in rich profusion before his
gloating eye. Being called upon to ’Say
grace, he placed himself in a becoming at
titude, aud began, “ Lord we thank Thee
for health, we thank Thee for provision,
we thank thee for appetite,” and then
suiting the motion to the sentiment,- raised
both hands, placed ^thoiu together, and
brought them in a graceful curve over his
portly front, continuing, “ we thank Thee
for capacity.”

The position of political parties in this
state, has always been m nearly op an
equilibrium, as to render the success or
defeat of either greatly dependent on con
tingent causes, Both have always stood
ready to catch at evory circumstance de
veloped by the times that might poHSthly
commend them favorably to public opinion.
The overwhelming defeat of that party
which sided with the Flournoy petition in
1839, so paralized the efforts of those fa
vorable to legislative action, that until the
Sons of Temperance had made such rapid
strides among all classes of people, they
did not make any demonstration in its be
half until 1853.
The movement was sustained by several
of the loading presses of the State. A
number of Grand Juries approved and ap
plauded it. Large meetings composed of
Whigs and Democrats, were held hi vari
ous counties, and the friend* of the cause
began to be sanguine of success. But
it was soon seen that temperance bad

key, retired to a shed, and literally drank
himself to death.

himself on the 22nd of October, while la
boring under a fit of mania a gotu.
—The landlord of the “ Straub House,
in Rossville, Butlar County 1 Ohio, recent
ly made a wager that he could drink more
whiskey than another shameless wretch
who Was Willing to be his competitor, lie

—One of ° ur Canadian exchanges,
“The St, Catharine’# Po4.-” of ft ree°nt
date, contained the following illustrations
of the rum traffic in the Provinces: A
drunken map stretched himself on one of
then&rapcts of Dewffipsfcr Bridge, and as
uo one interfered with his « inalienable
right” to do so, he veiy naturally tumbled
off, and was found next morning, on the
river side, dead.. At Bytown, a man and
woman wet® recently drugged to death by
the excessive use of liquors. At thc same
place, during the past ^summer, many
deaths occurred from the use of liquor in
-which were mixed some poisonous ingxedi-
en,ts. In Perth, a short time since, a chtld
was smothered, f4 cunscqucnoe of neglect,
tphile its parents were in a state ot intoxi
cation. These instances show that the in
fluence of the traffic is everywhere the same,
ft »4 each separate fact of this character is
an argument for prohibition that nothing
but avarice, or inhumanity, or stupidly
could resist.

Prom proof sheets sent out in adyuBCP
of the publication, it has bosh fully dem
onstrated that despite of the evils of slave
ry, and the hard fate to which the poor
black has been consigns 1, by the CKf-er-
wrought pictures -of h T irthern croakers,
they enjoy a greater longevity than the
whites in thc slaveholdinging states; there
by establishing what many are loth to be
lieve, that they enjoy a freedom from care
and anxiety a cheerfulness of mind, to
which many of thc are strangers.
From certain calculations heretofore
made by ourselves, from the census reports,
we predict that the same statistics will
show, that the whites are more subject to
all the nafcurtUlls *>f such-as insanity,
idiocy &c. , with the .single exception .of the
loss"of vision, -which may possibly predom
inate, owing to their greater exposure to
the intense heat of an almost tropical sun.
We anticipate a rich treat from the volume
in question, and would recommend & as an
antidote for fimatizism in the cases of some
of our politico-ecclesiastical friends who
have ignored the Bible entirely on the
subject of slavery.
