The Quaker and the Lawyer.—
Friend Broad brim/ eaid Zephaniah Strait-
lace to his master, a ricli Quaker, of the
city of Brotherly Love/ thou canst not eat
of that leg of mutton at thy noon-tide
tabfo to day!’
‘Wherefore not ?’ asked the good Qua
ker.
‘Because the dog that appertaincth to
that son of Beliid, whom the world calleth
Lawyer Foxcraft, hath come into thy pan
try and stolen it; yea, and he hath quite
devoured it!’
‘Beware, Friend Zephaniah, of bearing
false witness against thy neighbor ! Art
thou sure it Was Friend Foxcraft’s do
mestic animal
‘Yen, verily, I saw it with my eyes, and
it was Lawyer Foxcraft’s dog, even Pinch’
em.’
‘Upon what evil times have we fallen !’
sighed the harmless sectary, as he wended
his way to his neighbor’s office.
‘Friend Gripus/ said he, ‘I want to ask
thy opinion.’
‘I am all attention/ replied the scribe,
laying down his pen.
‘Supposing, Friend Foxcraft, that my
dog had gone into my neighbor’s pantry
and stolen therefrom a leg of mutton, and
I saw him, and conld call him by name,
what ought I to do ?’
,Pav for the mutton, of course—nothing
can he clearer.’
,Ivnow thou, Friend Foxcraft, thy dog—
even the beast men denominate Pinch’
em—hath stolen from my pantry a leg of
mutton, of the just value of four shillings
and sixpence, which I paid for in the
market this morning.’
‘If it be so, then it is my opinion that
I must pay for it!’ Aud having done so,
the worthy Friend turned to depart.
‘Tarry yet a little, Friend Broadbrim !’
cried the lawyer. ‘Of a verity I have yet
further to say unto thee : thou owest me
six aud eightpence for advice !’
‘Then verily I must pay thee; and it is
my opinion that I have touched pitch and
been defiled!’

A Perfumed Dandy Snubbed.—
Sitting on the piazza of the Cataract House
at Niagara Falls, was a young, foppish
1 loking gentleman, his garments very higly
ly scented with a mingled odor of cologne
a id musk. A solemn-faced, odd-looking
man, after passing the dandy several times
with a look of aversion which drew general
notice, suddenly sloped, and in a confiden
tial tone said, ‘Stranger, I know what’ll
take that scent out of your clothes; you—
‘What ! what do you mean, sir?’ said the
exquisite, ‘fired with indignation/ starting
tnjm his chair. ‘O, get mad, now—swear
pitch round, fight—just because a man
wants to do you a kindness !’ cooly replied
the stranger. ‘But, I tell you, I do know
what’ll take out that smell—phew ! You
just bury your clothes—bury ’em a day or
two. Uncle Josh got afoul of a skunk
and lie’—at this instant there went up
irom the crowd a simultaneous roar of
merriment ; and the dandy very sensibly
‘cleared the coop/ and vanished up stairs.
Infallible Remedies.—-We havo no
faith in quack medicines, but think it al

For sea-sickness—stay at home.
For drunkenness—drink cold water.
For accident—keep out of danger.
For fear of Sheriffs—pay your debts.
To be happy—be honest.
To please all—mind your own business.
To make money—advertise.
To have a good conscience—~keop the

To do right—take an agricultural pa

To prevent stammering—speak nothing
