Popping the. Question by Locomo
tive Action.—The Knickerbocker hits
off admirably in the following love declara
tion the regular clank and racket of a lo
comotive engine under full headway. The
lover’s “brakes” and those of the locomo
tive arc most scientifically put on :
Jly those checks of lovely hue;
By those eyes of deepest blue,
TV Inch thy very soul looks through,
As if, forsooth those clear blue eyes
Were.' portals into paradise j
By that alabaster brow ;
By that hand as white as snow,
By that proud, angelic form;
By that founded, classic arm;
By those locks of raven hair;
By those vermeil lips,T swear;
By the ocean, by the air ;
By the lightnings, and the thunder;
By all things on earth and under;
By the electric telegraph;
By my future “better half;”
By our vespers, by our dreams;
By our nation and Te Dennis;
By young Cupid, by my Muse;

Wilt, you take a Sheep ?—A valua
ble friend, and an able farmer, about the
time that the Temperance reform was be
gining to exert a healthful influence in the
country, said to his newly hired man
“Johnathan, I did not mention to you
when I hired yoit, that I think of doing my
work this year without rum. How much
more must I give you to do without ?”
“ Oh,” said Johnathan, “ I don’t care
much about it; you may give me what you
please.”
“Well,” said the farmer, “I will give
you a sheep in the fall, if you will do with
out.”
“ Agreed,” said Johnathan.
The oldest sou then said, “ Father will
yon give me a sheep, if I will do without
rum ?”
“ Yes, Marshal, you shall have a sheep’
if you will do without.”
The youngest son, a stripling, (lien said,
“ Father, will you give me a sheep, if I
will do without it too ?”
“ Yes, Chandler, you shall have a sheep,
if you will do without rum.”
Presently, Chandler speaks again:
“ father, hadn’t you better take a sheep
too ?”
This was a poser; he hardly thought that
he could give up the “ good creature” yet;
but the appeal was from a source not to
be disregarded. The result was, the de
mon was henceforth banished from the
premises, to the great joy and final happi
ness of all concerned.

A Yankee Collector.—A gentleman
from New York, who had been in Boston
for the purpose of collecting some moneys
due him in that city, was about returning,
when he found that one bill of one hun
dred dollars had been overlooked. The
landlord, who knew the debtor, thought it
a donbtfull case; but added that if it was
collected at all, a tall rawboned Yankee
then dunning a lodger in another part of
the hall, would worry it out of the man.
Calling him up, therefore, he introduc-
elhim to the creditor, who show e l him
the account.
“ Wall, ’Squire,” said he “ ’taint much
use o’ tryin, 1 guess. 1 know that critter.
Y ou might as well try to squeeze ile out
of Bunker Hill Mdnumeut, as to c’lect a
debt of him. But and how, wuat’ll you
give, s'poisiu I try?”
“ Well, sir, the bill is one hundred dol
lars. I’ll give you—yes—I’ll give you
half, if you collect it.”
“’Greed,”replied the collector; “there’s
no harm in tryin, any way.”
Some weeks after, the creditor chanced
to be in Boston, and in walking up Tre-
mout street encountered his enterprising
friend:
“Look here, ’squire,” said he, “ I had
considerable luck with that bill o’ your’n.
You see I stuck to him like a dog to a
root, but for the first week or so, ’twau’t no
use—not a bit. If be was home, he was
short ; if he wasn’t home, I couldn’t get
no satisfaction. Says I, after going six
teen times, “ I’ll fix you,’ says I; so I sot
down an the door step, and sot all day and
part of the evening, and I began early
next day, and about ten o’ clock begin in.
H-paid me MY half and I gin him the
note !”
Dry Clouds.—Two boys among the
bl- ckberry bushes, some mile or two out
of town, saw a cloud rising, and heard a
sound like thunder. One, who was a lit
tle timid, said to the other, “ Come, Fred
let’s go home ; it thunders.” The other,
not wishing to return home so soon, denied
that it thundered at all. Directly the
rumbling noise was again borne ou the
freshening breeze. “ What’s that, then ?”
inquired the other. “ Why, dont you know
what that is ? If you don’t I’ll tell you.
You know it has been dry weather for a
long time. What clouds there are floating
about are as dry as old sheepskins, and
when the wind blows it rattles them.
A < iooD Reason.—Here’s your money,
dolt. Now tell me why your father wrote
me eighteen letters about this contempti
ble sum ? said an exasperated debtor.—
“ I’m sure, I can’t tell, sir; but if you’ll
excuse me sir, I think it were because sev
enteen letters did’t fetch it!”
Coaxing the Bear.—“ My love,” said
Mrs. Foozle to her husband, “ oblige me
with a five pound note to-day to purchase
a new dress,” “Shan’t do any such thing,
Agnes—you called me a bear yesterday ?”
“ Lor, love, that was nothing; I meant by
it that you were fond of hugging.” “ You
little , I have no five, but take a ten.

The Catholicon far surpasses other reme

leaving the system in a better condition. Let
all interested call and obtain a pamphlet (free)
containing ample proof, from the most resptc-
table sources, of the beneficial results of its
use; together with letters from highly expe

practice,and speak from theirown observations.
NOTICE TO UNFORTUNATE FEMALES.
I feel it a duty incumbent upon myself to
declare publicly the great blessing Dr. Mar-
chisi’s Uterine Catholicon has proved to me.
For two years my health-was miserable; I was
almost unable to walk. Physicians pronoun
ced my ease falling of the womb, extensive ul
cerations, commencing with fluor albus. The
pains, irritation, prostration, and the intolerable
foetid discharge, rendered life a burden. In
this miserable condition, Dr. F. P. Nevvland re-
commended Dr.Marchis’s Uterine Catholicon.
After taking four bottles I find myself in per
fect health. Gratitude for my restoration
makes me ardently desire that all my sex, alike
unfortunate, may find sure relief from this in
estimable medicine.
Elizabeth A. Newi.akd,
No. 19 YVest-st., Utica, N. Y.
The above statement I know to be true.
F. P. Newxand, M. D., Utica, N. Y.
I have no hesitation in saying, Dr. Mar-
chisi’s Uterine Catholicon is invaluable in ute-
rinedisenses generally. I have used it in Fluor
Albus, Amenorrhoea, Prolapsus Uteri, and in
cases of extensive ulceration of the vagina and
os uteri. It is worthy of the notice of the
Faculty. John C. Orrick, M. D.,

Marchisis Uterine Catholicon, and having de
rived great benefits therefrom, has no hesitancy
in pronouncing it one of the best medicines

Knoxville, Ga., March 4th, 1853.
The following commendation is from an a-
gent, resident at Trenton, Tennessee :
Trknton, Gibson Co., Tenn. Nov. 7, ’49.
Messrs. Scovil A Mead—Gentlemen : The
Hebrew Plaster is becoming popular in this sec-
tion. There is a lady in this county who says
she would not be without this Plaster for $50D
a year. She was afflicted for some time with an
enlargement of the Spleen which gave her a
great deal of pain. The swelling and pain had
extended up nearly to the armpit, and occasion
ally she could scarcely breathe. She was con
fined for a considerable length of time, during
which she was attended by some of onr best
physicians, but they gave'her no relief. She
procured a box of Hebrew Plaster, and itreliev-
ed her romost immediately, and now she keeps
a supply of it os hand constantly. These facts
you are at liberty to use as you think proper—
they are substantially true.
Respectfully, yours. &c.,
JESSE J. WELLS.
Beware of Counterfeits and Base imitations!
CAUTION.—The subscribers are the only
general agents in the Southern Slates for the
sale of this truly valuable Plaster: and in order
to prevent purchasers being imposed on by a

attention to the following marks of the genuine
1. The genuine is put up in smooth,“engine-

2. The genuine has the engraved head of Jew

accompanying record of court to E. Taylor,
Rochester. ;
Wlso take notice that the genuine has the
signature of E. Taylor, on-the steel plate en

CELEBRATED GERMAN BITTERS,

plaints which have been speedily cured by them, ws
may mention Liver Complaint, in its various for^
of Jaundice, Indigestion, Languor and Loss of Ap.
petite, Listlessness, Irritability, Bilious Headachs,
Bilious Fever, Fever and Ague, Pain in the 3id»
and Loins; for, in truth, all these are but the cos-
sequence of diseased action in the liver. As ut
aperient, they afford prompt and sure relief in Cos
tiveness, Piles, Colic, Dysentery, Humors, Scrof
ula and Scurvy, Colds with soreness of'the body,
Ulcers and impurity of the blood; in short, any
and every case where a purgative is required.
They have also produced some singularly su«.
eessful cures in Rheumatism, Gout, Dropsy, Gravel,
Erysipelas, Palpitation of the Heart, Pains in tie
Back, Stomach, and Side. They should be freely
taken in the spring of the year, to purify the blood
and prepare the system for the change of seasons.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels into healthy action, and restores the appe
tite and vigor. They purify the blood, and, by their
stimulant action on the circulatory system! reno
vate the strength of the body, and restore th«
wasted or diseased energies of the whole CTganism.
Hence an occasional dose is advantageous, even
though no serious derangement exists; but un
necessary dosing should never be carried too far,
as every purgative medicine reduces the strength,
when taken to excess. The thousand cases in whieh
a physic is required cannot be enumerated here, but
they suggest themselves to the reason of every
body; and it is confidently believed this pill will
answer a better purpose than anjr thing which hiu
hitherto been available to mankind. When their
virtues are once known, the public will no longer
doubt what remedy to employ when in need ef a
cathartic medicine.
